Always, even during the middle of the day?

Not a big fan of that, tbh.

I have to admit that i do drive with my dips on all the time too. i always have, vechile permitting.

I agree that that would be a bit safer

Low set sun, dusty road etc. From my own experience i notice cars coming alot sooner with fog lights on, Which has to be a good thing in case a car is going passing out or something.
The sun and conditions that would bring about that much dust are very rare in Ireland. I don't really care by the way. It doesn't bother me that much. I'll sometimes use the fogs instead of low beam, very rare though.

I just think some of the reasons people come up with for using their fogs is funny when the real reason is they do it is because they think it makes them look cool. Which it doesn't. :p

It's also wasteful to have your lights on all the time.

I admit that most people do it because they think they look cool. Im not even going to fight my corner anymore as iv already had people who cant handle my views and just call me names:rolleyes: Also driving with your window open is also wasteful:P

Now I can add a c) to that list
    c) I will assume that you are concentrating on trying to be cool, instead of concentrating on controlling 3 tonnes of metal, and are therefore putting me in danger.

I'll make you a deal I'll stop using fog lights when I'm operating a 3tonne hgv. I suggest you learn more about your car before you put yourself in danger.

Why do you think they call them fog lights, as a matter of interest? Just answer that for us.

How do they help in fog? The reason i use them during the day is because i can always see cars coming sooner with them on and feel its safer. Its during the day they don't blind people, If i didn't have fogs id use my head lights during the day. I don't use them now during the day because i don't want a bulb going when i have to drive at night.

I couldn't answer. Thats statement was more in a response to the person who said that they don't agree with driving around with dims on

Yes and if im right i think they have a good road safety record? I think all new cars should come with day time running lights as standard.

They were comsidering making it law here but didn't because of administrative and enforcing costs in the end.

ahhh fog lights..one of my pet hates,

unless its foggy, and i mean really foggy, vis<50 meters?,
then turn you f**king fog lights off,
    you're just being a jerk...
Rear fog lights can be very distracting for the driver behind.

only time i use when not foggy is when a different jerk is driving tooo close beind me at night.
(stg else i do i verrryy lightly touch the brake with my left foot while accelerating, seem to confuse the jerk!! :D)

Did you ever drive in thick fog? Put on your fulls and it makes visibility alot worse, All a fog light is a bulb pointing straight on just like the fulls.

it doesn't bother me. Rear fog lights are a pain in the hole when not used right, especially at night.
Front fogs, meh.. they mightn't be used correctly most of the time, but they're not that distracting or blinding.

That's funny, I haven't been trying to be abusive yet, It was a genuine question.

Fog lights are for the benefit of others, NOT you.

Have you actually tried it? It's a lot different with fogs.

I think I realise why fog light threads are banned in Motors.

Pretty clear why this topic is not allowed in the motors forum. :pac:

    Snap JB.

    Here's a fun little experiment:

    You will need:
    A car
    Working headlights
Decent length journey (say 20 miles)
    Basic mental arithmetic

    Procedure
    Step 1
Take your outbound journey with your headlights off and keep track of the number of people who pull out in front of you from junctions, causing you to slow down.

    Step 2
On the return journey drive with your dipped lights switch on and again keep note of the idiots pulling out ahead of you.

    Results
I can almost guarantee that more people will jump out when you have your lights off.

    Conclusion
So, even if they don't make you more visible, they do make you more threatening to the cretins out there! :D

Always, even during the middle of the day?

Not a big fan of that, tbh.

I always drive with at least my dims on.

My cousin was in a (minor) car accident years ago. She had the same colour car as I have now. The other driver claimed he couldn't see her because her lights weren't on, due to the colour of her car, and got away with it. I'm still a pretty woeful driver, I'm not risking someone pulling the same crap on me. Not that you'd miss the L plates! (Which got stolen in Limerick outside Harvey Normans on the Saturday before christmas. I'm still trying to decide whether I'm bitter or amused.)

My pet hate is rear fog lights on when not needed. A firend asked me to quiz her on rules of the road and I asked her when do you drive with fog lights on and she said "What are fog lights"-I kid you not!! She had been driving and had her own car at least 1 year.

How about the amount of people driving around with only 1 headlamp??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

It might be cynical, but I blame the NCT for the one headlight thing. People don't bother fixing problems until their NCT is coming up. Annoying.

    My car is this colour
    Clicky

Minus the shininess and it blends right into your typical grey Irish day.

Don't have my dims on in the middle of the day though.

I would have thought people would be more concious of their lights because of the NCT. It should also mean headlamps are properly adjusted not one light on dips and the other on full beams blinding you-I have seen so many cars with lights like this.

Well fcuk off and live in Sweden then. Take Vain with you too, you could live together and talk about how great foglights are all day

Anything that makes me more visible has to be a good thing. Why would anybody b e pissed off they are like 10 inches off the ground and are directed onto the road

They are not directed at the ground at all. And worse still, when the ground is wet, this means that there is a huge amount of undirected reflection from the wet and shiny/reflective road. Fog lights are illegal, FULL STOP. If you are behind me with your fog lights on and and I stick on my rear fog lights, you'd be pretty annoyed, I imagine. Yet I'd be doing the exact same thing as you....having my fog lights on....whether its front or back fogs, it does hnot matter....the law states you may not have fog lights on when there is not bad visibility.

I think there's been a bit of confusion here. I'd say Sweden's law is probably related to DRL (daytime running lights) which are like low intensity dipped beams. Volvo, a Swedish company, have fitted DRLs as standard for many years. I doubt any country in the world requires fog lights to be on permanently.

I drive with dips on all the time.
