Isnt it so cool to drive around all day with your fog lights on !

Personally i totally disagree, i would be slow to put them on even when its foggy - i think it is too bright with the fog, like having your head lights on in the fog.

What ye guys think ? who will own up !

(PS i did double check with a MOD before i posted this here - if another mod wants to delete/lock it then "they are more than welcome to" :))

These are the lights that help to blind you sometimes as the car faces towards you, right?
If so, I cycle a lot that they blind the feck out of me at inappropriate times when they are not needed!

Hate when people drive with foglights on especially when they are an SUV so higher up and behind me...seem to catch the mirror all the time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

yeah biggins the "spot lights" usually at the bottom of the car under the head lights.

I used to drive a jeep ! so was very weary about even having the normal lights on.

hate the people that drive with foglights on when not neccesary.

hate the people who drive behind you with full beams on even more though.

I have automatic lights on my car and I have it set that lights (including spot lights) are always on when I'm driving, day or night

Matt Cooper was talking about this before Christmas. A lot of people drive around with them on all the time cause they think it looks cool. Potentially quite dangerous though.

    Spot lights?

Absolutely wrecks my head!! You can't see sh*t when people have fog lights on and as far as I'm aware, they HAVE TO be fitted to all cars, but are only to be used in VERY remote country roads with no other lighting and foggy as fu*k.

I wouldn't even use them in very foggy conditions on Dublin roads as there is enough lighting already and with the fog it is just a screen of light and very difficult to make out what's ahead until last minute, where as normal lights you can see the haze of the car coming with the lights on very clearly from a distant.

Ask your local TD to propose banning in order to get your vote next time.

An other name for front fog lights.

Why do you have them turned on? Do you realise you're pissing off most of the motorists on the roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,311 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

Anything that makes me more visible has to be a good thing. Why would anybody b e pissed off they are like 10 inches off the ground and are directed onto the road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭Aodan83

Can't stand when people drive with fog lights on all the time. Might as well just turn on your full headlights, and pull out a torch too, for good measure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,094 ✭✭✭✭javaboy

So why do you dip your headlights when approaching or following another vehicle? After all main beam headlights make you more visible right?

Have you seriously never found fog lights dazzling?

Rear fog lights - yes; Front fog lights - no. Front fogs are purely optional and not a legal requirement.

I have been driving for nigh on ten years and I can honestly say that front fog lights have never ever dazzled me. I barely notice them. **** that don't dip their headlights do my head in though.

I hate when people in front dont use the handbrake at night and glare the feck out of you keeping the foot on the brake. That and muppets who dont dip their lights. I shouldn't have to dip my mirror becuase it's glaring me - it's dangerous. Bit of common courtesy seems to escape so many people.

What's worse are those godawful blueish lights that some cars have. They fairly cut the eyes out ya when you're driving.

Have you seen micras? The old shape ones? Those fog lights are blinding. Ditto for quite a lot of SUV's. I've seen hundreds of dodgy / glaring foglights around.

Can anyone produce evidence of an accident caused by fog lights been on inappropriately?

There will be obviously no evidence for the opposite as they are accidents missed but I'm still pretty sure that they add an extra benefit.

Idon't go into Motors (too many holier than thous) too often Ciaran so I missed them threads. MarkR I must have been just lucky but i rarely even notice if a car has fog lights on. Badly adjusted dim lights are more of a nuicance I'd imagine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭dancingqueen

Presumably, Quazzie, you must not notice other fog lights because you have yours on ALL the time as you say, automatic lights.

They are called FOG lights because you use them in FOG.

It's inconsiderate to other road users, cyclists and pedestrians. If I HAVE to use my fog lights because there is a FOG, i always turn them off when meeting other road users, just like full beams.

    Where would you find that?

Can you find many crashes that are reported to caused by another driver that didn't dip their headlights?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,942 ✭✭✭Danbo!

I used to flash people with foglights on, but most people don't even realise they are on, so theres not much point as it distracts the driver, wondering whats wrong.

If you drive with no lights on at night, everyone flashes, you then realise your lights are off. If everyone flashed drivers with fogs on it might make a difference, but that aint gonna happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Dont have front fogs so can't drive with them on.

Have found over the years though that the rear foglights are much more painful on the eyes than the ill-focussed front ones. Front I can live with, rear do my nut in - especially when there hasn't been fog for months!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Whenever I see people driving with unnecessary fogs on, I always pray that they'll end up wrapped around a bollard or lamp post further on.

Very evident that some people in this thread are mixing fog lights up with full head lights.

Fog lights are very useful in the fog. Hence the term fog lights. They clearly shine through the fog letting you know there's a car in front of you, therefore you should slow down.

On some cars fog lights and break lights are almost identical, so any idiot who drives around with their fog lights on in non foggy conditions for the sake of "coolness" should have their head stamped on with my foot.

Low set sun, dusty road etc. From my own experience i notice cars coming alot sooner with fog lights on, Which has to be a good thing in case a car is going passing out or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,344 ✭✭✭Thoie

I will hate you if you're driving around with your fog lights on when it's not foggy because

    a) I will assume you are not familiar with the rules of the road and the laws about driving, and are therefore putting me in danger
    b) I will assume that you are unfamiliar with your car's controls, and are therefore putting me in danger

Now I can add a c) to that list
    c) I will assume that you are concentrating on trying to be cool, instead of concentrating on controlling 3 tonnes of metal, and are therefore putting me in danger.

    Usually situated underneath the headlights.

That's what DRL or dimmed headlights are for, not foglights.

Do front fogs blind you during the day, no they don't. I don't see the big issue using them during the day instead of dimmed headlights. Wouldn't it be worse if you were using your dimmed headlights during the day and the bulb went and you were driving at night with only one head light.

Interesting. Some cars seem to have far to many options in the lights department.

In my car, I can have
Full head lights for driving in the dark
Dimmed head lights when meeting other cars at night, or when driving at dusk or dawn
Fog lights at the rear to stop people crashing into the back of my car when it's foggy.

So whats the fog lights on the front all about. Are they lights meant to aid YOU in seeing the road better, or lights to aid other motorists to see your car in foggy conditions?

    Edit:
Oh just seen the pics above. I know those lights now. Never though of them as fog lights, was to busy boiling in rage at the sight of another chaved up mode of transport.

    Actually, yes they do.
or light to aid other motorists to see your car in foggy conditions?

That's exactly what they are for but some people reckon it's for their benefit so they can that extra 3 or 4 inches on the road.

edit: oh and because they 'look cool'
