And will be really appreciative as well :D

    Honestly.....

Ok, before I get swamped with requests (expensive!), I'm going to pick up two minis, one reserved for egan007, and one for coldfire1x. Sorry folks, but can't afford to buy any more :(
If egan007 doesn't want one, I'll offer it on Adverts, where it'll be first come first served!
No "next in line" please :)

    guys / girls....

i appreciate your eagerness to pick up a bargain, BUT remember this....these are end of line units. [ ie maxi and mini units]

Route66 are GPS software GUI providers first and foremost.... & hardware bearing the R66 logo have/ had maps under licence from Navteq.

some of the companies using Navteq licences include ( in the past ) , AIRIS; uk RAC; Nokia; and Sony erricsson.

R66 picked Navteq to be their map provider mainly because prior to 2008, navteq were market leaders re map data. At the time ( esp in USA ) navteq were the ONLY mappers.....

now that teleASS are in the market, they ( r66) are open to them.

While their prop software ( ie R66 Sync ) supports their licenced hardware, this WILL change, depending on your region. Going forward , what will happen is that when you connect to R66 servers, via R66 sync, your IP address will determine what map update is available to you.

this may or may not be a Navteq OR TeleASS update.

So, while these units are bargains at the moment, please be aware that R66 have their allegiance to the US market, and will only provide support to us via Navteq or TeleASS , depending on economics, going forward.

My advice.......DO NOT update your maps unless you KNOW you are getting Navteq. And even then , be prudent and wait till this time next year.

at least by then you will have got the best of your bargain......the old adage prevails( if its too good to be true , it prob is! )

    PS
R66 WILL be giving european IP addresses Teleass maps VERY soon as updates. You have been advised.

[ mods please move to GPS ] tks

So what you're saying is, Route 66 may or may not choose to use the equally as good TeleAtlas maps for their devices in future?! Stop the presses!

Google maps are provided by TeleAtlas. And from my experience, they have better rural coverage than Navteq. I would use Google maps for my coverage if I could.

What im saying is R66 will use whatever map data they decide is ADEQUATE ( in their opinion, given costs ) for the region you are hitting their servers from. At the minute, all hits from european IP addresses, constitute a NAVTEQ update once selected. This WILL change.

In contrast TomTom servers will provide Teleass map updates to all server hits, given the fact that tomtom now own teleASS. As an ironic example, older tomtoms used navteq mapping, but if you paid for a map update now, you would get the less detailed teleASS maps !!!!

Regarding your opinion re TeleASS maps being AS good....this is simply not the case. For example, Current TeleASS maps do not include irish townlands names as part of their mapping.

I take your point about Google using teleASS maps BUT you must realise that teleASS provide Google with their up to date map data for the google app. They also provide the same data to GPS hardware providers. They ( hardware manufacturers) are supplying the consumer with previous quarterly maps with NEW units. In doing so , it creates a business model whereby the hardware companies provide an update facility to generate extra revenue.

dont confuse what Teleass provide to google maps OR what Navteq provide to Microsoft as the same as what Garmon and the others provide to us when we buy a GPS unit....The manufacturers expect us to seek a map update at some time or another...

    PS
Actually, the hardware providers, inc garmin/ tomtom / navigon/ etc HAVE the latest maps......its just that they choose what version to include with their units. This choice is based on business rules drawn on the above examples and is rolled out to coincide with new hardware releases.
For instance....Garmin held off the latest map release for IRL/ UK till November 2008 to coincide with the release of the latest Garmins with lane assist....
Do you think for one minute that lane assist would be released based on an earlier map??

[ mods.....please move to GPS at will ]

As eirlink suggests - can we have any further discussion about this over in the GPS section?

Did any of you update the actual GPS software itself. On the site it says "We recommend that this update should be run only if you encounter problems with the GPS signal. "

    Yes i did
Its the GPS firmware by the way.

Why? Its still being discussed about the bargain for it so this is the correct place.

brushedmoss - thanks for the map update info. I sent an email to support@66.com today to ask about a free map update, so hopefully I'll get a positive answer as well.
Agree that the software updates are great, and make a big difference to the GUI.

i too tried to ping the support guys about a week and a half ago askin for up to date maps for a new unit i had just bought with 2007 maps, but got totally blanked by them. they say the maxi/minis are no longer sold by them, though they do provide (paid for) map updates....

    hope you have better luck.:(

Talked to them yesterday about it and they sent me an email. So you have to send a scan or photo of the receipt showing clearly the date of purchase ( has to be after w29 2008) and you have to also send a screenshot of "my device" in r66 sync with the maps expanded down to showing the version number of the map. They will then send a voucher code to upgrade to the latest q3 2008 maps.

So those getting the devices off somone else get him to give you a photocopy of the receipt - if it was a multiple purchase.

Thanks for the heads up with regards updating the maps.

I got the Mini today in Halfords Letterkenny. Were a few of both Maxi and Mini there, I'm told (was bought on my behalf).

Charging it at the moment, so haven't powered it up yet.

I just got off the phone from their support guys and they are emailing me a voucher5 code today :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,247 ✭✭✭leex

Any of you had any hassle updating the maps? I ran the Sync program, it downloaded the maps and at the point of copying to unit it is failing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

Yeah that happens. Just try it again and it will work. It will also not re-download the map.
It can take well over an hour to copy across to the device though.
Also the update it finds is not really an update. Its still Q2 2007 maps and is not worth the bother.
If you get the voucher code to Q3 2008 maps then that would be worth downloading.

Would you like to share your experience :) I mean how did you managed to convince then to send you the voucher code. Saw some posts that they are looking for photocopies for receipts etc. What did you tell them?

I had originally sent them a mail last Thursday but got no reply. Just rang them this morning and just said that I had bought a unit and believed I was entitled to a map upgrade. The guy asked me to email him a copy of the receipt and I told him I had already sent a mail with a pic of the receipt and the device ID. He asked me my email address and searched for the mail. When he found it he said that he had already been working on it and had sent it to a different department which would send me the voucher codes at some stage today so hopefully I will have them by this evening.

Thats the same as me. "Its been sent to a different department".
Would be surprised if the codes are sent this side of new years.

I emailed them last night from the address on their website.

Hopefully, they'll issue me with a new map.

As an aside, on initial switchon, how long before it locks onto satellites to determine its location? I was standing outside for 5 mins and it was still looking for GPS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,247 ✭✭✭leex

I left mine for over 30mins the first time and it didn't connect. I did a reset and when it came on again it was fine.

Thinking of getting one. Are they still available in Liffey Valley?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,268 ✭✭✭Elessar

Got my voucher code but don't know what to do with it - do I just download the map directly then put it on the device and then enter the code on the device? Or is it done through Route66 sync?

Elessar - When did you send your email. I am still waiting on mine after sending the email last friday and talking to the support guys on Monday

I got a reply email today, to say the request had been elevated to another department.

Still to get the voucher code, probably wont get it til early January now.

@ Leex: will try that so, thanks for the tip.

I used this in London on Mon & Tues this week and was very happy with it. It uses full postcode searching which is great. An Aldi unit I used in UK in Oct only used first 4/5 chars which was a pain. I did notice some postcodes were not found.

It suggested an exit from M11 when approaching Stansted but I continued for next exit. It seemed to get slightly confused thinking I was on slip road suggested when I was still in fact on motorway. Minor hiccup.
