Hard part there is getting the Tom Tom software!

I have the cab file, but how to get it to install onto the mini?

Well then you have the wrong version.
Its not in a cab file. They are for WM6 PDAs

And who uses a sat nav in ireland?
I rarely do. Mostly just to use the thing cos i bought it but know exactly where i am going. Of course local knowledge is much better.

    Best for holidays mainly.

I use mine several times a day ,mainly in work.

Went into Halfords 2 days ago and there was a couple left. For some reason though, even after expressing interest in buying the mini, the sales assistants didn't want to sell me the thing and kept going on about the garmins. Wouldn't let me see how it worked either.

Eventually found a Halfords that WOULD let me look at the satnavs, but by that stage they were out of the minis.
    There all gone now apparently.
    FFS.

Anyone know of any similar satnav deals in the future.

This isn't a bad price and is as equally customizable as the route 66
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146672

Also has 2008 maps out of the box ....

I got the maxi regional in halfords in navan yesterday for 69euro. The girl told me the store is newly opened and they have both mini's and maxi's.

I got an LG one in Halfords Blanch last night for 50 quid . They had loads of the 70 quid Route 66 too.

just to row in behind wertz comments of a few days ago....

i too picked up one of the minis in halfords in dundalk, primarily for my wife. took it for a test spin to dublin and back. as has been stated, the maps are a wee bit stale, but it is a very tidy unit. very simple to use, clear instructions and i like the night mode. no hassle picking up a signal and adjusted pretty well to me going off the suggested route.

it is not the rolls royce of satnavs, have used a few others on different occasions, but the ease of use will appeal to the wife big style. all in for the price of 40 odd bills, you can't go too far wrong. even the 50 to update the maps isn't that steep, or i can hack the bejasus out of it and investigate the whole tomtom stuff on it.

i would heartily endorse this product and/or service :D

I've been using Route 66's maps (version 7) on my PDA/GPS for a couple of years and find it to work quite well. At this stage version 7 is outdated, particularly with one way streets. The picture shows version 8 which I've never used, but I'm sure it's up to date now.

I was toying with the idea of getting that one the other day before I got the mini...any good? The girl couldn't find the unit that was supposed to be in it's box in the display case. Said it had navteq maps, rest of the features looked similar.

+1 on night mode like Pil said...just a bit awkward to find on the menu when I needed it the other morning.

Currently trying to get tomtom onto it...some teething trouble but I'll get there eventually...

Anyone know if this is still available in around Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭eire1

The LG one is alrite yeah, a bit awkward typing some addresses in as it has some predictive text. Apart from that it's grand.

I got the very last mini in Halfords Blanchardstown! It was hidden behind a reduced sign on top of the maxis (which there are loads of btw). The assistant was adamant there were none left and that it was an empty box but lo and behold it was full with the seal intact. So I put my €30 in vouchers to good use and got it for a tenner! Reduced from 299, you cant go wrong :D

It will be a great replacement for my Airis unit. Screen is very bright with crisp resolution and the software is very easy to use. I must admit the voice prompts did miss recognising one or two exits on roundabouts on the way home but it was otherwise accurate.

Really pleased with it anyway it's a quality unit. It just saved me having to shell out €400 on a new phone with GPS!

    Thanks OP!

Loads of Minis & Maxis in Halfords, Letterkenny. Picked up the Maxi.
Download the free software update from the route 66 website, it makes a big improvement to the user menu.

I got the Navman F10 for 39.99 in Halfords last week. Seems a nice unit but the maps are from 2007. Anyone know anything about running tom tom maps off this unit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

That navman is very old. The R66 mini and maxis are actually about 1 year and a quarter old too though.

You need to install the Navman unlocking software. Its not near as straight forward to access WinCE as the R66 PNAs.

    Youll find all at http://navmanunlocked.wikispaces.com/

You will then have to search around the internet to determine the correct version of tom tom and on how to get it and get it working.

There seems to be some great info there. Thanks for the link.

I got a Maxi and a Mini, both had 2007 maps on them, I rang R66, and they gave me voucher codes to update the maps to q3 2008 for UK+Ire for free, as you are entitled to have the current maps of time of purchase (had to scan in receipts and email them in with screen shots of device id's) . I note that the q3 2008 do not have some roads that are 6 months old, so not too sure what the date refers to , release of the data not what it represents I suspect.

Also, it's worth running the gps and r66 updates, TMC support wasn't available in the original shipped version of r66 on my units, but was once the software update was installed (though there is no tmc support in s. ireland until it is resumed from a few years ago, next year.)

wrt tomtom vs r66 , I find that it is really personal preference, tainted by which was the first s/ware you used :-) mine was copilot, destinator is my favorite by far, but R66 has everything I need, including a good search and is fast on these units.

brushedmoss - thanks for the map update info. I sent an email to support@66.com today to ask about a free map update, so hopefully I'll get a positive answer as well.
Agree that the software updates are great, and make a big difference to the GUI.

    egan007 - lol..... :)
eh hang on a minute, a fellow biker eh?
I'll be in Leixlip on the 27th & 28th, so if you can make it there, after 7pm, I'll pick one up for you. Pay & collect, no postage (sorry tantipie). Best I can offer.

BTW - rang local Halfords, 15 minis and 6 maxis in stock.
(Now if I was an entrepreneur........)
