Yeah, tell us your opinion so far... I have a Tomtom, with old maps, thinking to buy new ones, but maybe is cheaper to buy this one...

    Are these still available ?

My old satnav has started misbehaving, a 2 year old Airis T920. Might give this a go. Thanks!

I haven't turned it on yet. It's is charging at home at the moment. Its seems a solid well made unit, screen seems a bit on the small size. Any reviews i've read say its an excellent sat nav.

I got mine in limerick but think its a nationwide offer

Read this post, legged it up to Carrickmines and got one.
    Thanks

The guy in Halfords didn't know what I was asking for but I persevered and he found one in the stockroom.

Just picked up two in Limerick, one for me, one for a new start in work who needed a sat nav. Thanks

Did any of you try these out yet? Hoping to get someone in Cork to collect one for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Just got one in the Dundalk branch...couple left. They're in a display case away from the garmins and tom toms. Also had a 4.3" model @€;69.
Charging now, will post back later...

Did it during the summer. More fun with an actual map/guidbook imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭tw0nk

anyone know if its possible to replace the software on this with tomtom or something? thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭skuzzb

Malahide Road sold out of the 40 quid ones.
Got the 70 quid one with the bigger screen.
Screen is bright, clear and responsive, seems to be good at picking up location but didnt go for a drive with it yet.
Search function is decent but not as good as others.
Its Windows CE so its probably very hackable so might try TomTom out on it.
Glad I got the bigger one tbh. Still a bargain!

Went to Liffey Valley Retail park, after myself and another bloke there was about 15 units left at 6.30pm. It's pre loaded with the Q2 2007 maps. One thing you'll need is an sd card reader in order to actually update the thing tho, I haven't so I've to buy one tomorrow. They're not too expensive in fairness though. Used it tonight and it was fairly quick recalculating any wrong turns I took when testing it out. For €40 you can't go wrong really.

My mam has the older version, she loves it.. For the money its a bargain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭tw0nk

Lightening bolt, i dont think there are free updates to Q4 2008, I tried the software and you can upgrade the 2007 maps to latest fixed version but cannot upgrade to 2008 Q3 maps without purchasing.

Skuzzb, could you please shed some light on how to install tomtom on this device please? thanks in advance.

eh, where does it say this on the site? are you guessing? i tried updating and it wants 49.99 to update to latest maps, if you know how to do this for free please state, otherwise you are just commenting without proof.

Anybody know if these are still available in the Cork store in Mahon?

Hold on, I went out and bought the unit because of the said update on the maps. I'll go look for it and pm you, deleting that last post until I find it.

edit: can't find official site link so apologies, here's a link which does confirm it though. Third paragraph. http://www.yournav.com/content/n/368/MINI-and-MAXI-new-Route-66-PND+

I've yet to sync it since no sd slot so if I find out I'll post back.

no offense but I think that article is either wrong or route 66 gave them false information, i hope it is right and that I am doing something wrong

Bought Route 66 - the mobile version - three years ago. Whilst this unit will be different, I'm interested to see how much better the mapping is now.

Can some of you post back any shortcomings you find? The version I have is ok most of the time, but the mapping could be better - especially when it comes to the smaller country roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭TarfHead

I took my route 66 on a quick 5-mile spin around South County Dublin this afternoon. So far, it's the best value €40 I have spent in a long time.

Side roads clearly labelled, petrol stations and shops flagged, re-calculation of route done well.

I may be even more impressed if I ever get around to reading the 128 page manual ;) !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭brightkane

Got 3 of them today as pressies - they are flying out of the store the guy said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭menuisier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭brightkane

It mentions Bluetooth syncing with a phone in the manual on the disc. The review in the original post also mentions it.

Strange that it says nothing about that feature on the outer packaging.

Mini's sold out in Halfords Liffey Valley this evening; plenty of Maxi units left though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭brightkane

    from this review

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-devices/review/2008/01/07/Route-66-Mini-Regional-Sat-Nav/p1

"TMC and Bluetooth phone functions can be added at a later date via various add-on accessories as and when funds allow."

There is a wireless car kit accessory available seemingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

    Goddamn it.
Bought it tonight and thought was suspicious that the seal sticker was broken.
No car charger and memory card in the box and unit did not start from new install and had history items from wexford and waterford.. Damn them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

Oh by the way maps are Q2 2007 and Q2 2008 is available by R66 sync.
    These are quite old stock.

i dont trust sat navs, i was using one on my way down to galway, and considering i live in maynooth so i drive the N4 and M4 on a daily basis i know its the sligo road but it leads on the the M6 (for galway), but when i was passing the maynooth turn off after collecting my friend from leixlip it told me to turn off, then to make a U-turn (on the M4) i turned it off as i didnt need it, my friend turned it back on later to find we were supposedly driving trough fields and it was givig us all sorts of directions.

when we finally got to glaways city (no thanks to the sat nav) it tried to send me down a one way street which i took cause i dont know galway city and ended up having to reverse back down!!! it wasnt fun!!! :(

you can download Q3 2008 from R66 using R66SYNC software supplied with the unit. it will load and run the mapping fine for around 30 days, then it locks the maps. you need to put 50 holes in your credit card to unlock them again !

..and before anyone asks..the answer is NO, keygens or cracks will not open the padlocks. the decript key is unit specific, with one side on the R66 server, and anyway its illegal.

The unit is only as good as the mapping that comes with it. Its the mapping that let you down in this case. I remember driving through a town in the midlands 3 years ago - it was sending me round in a circle!
