Pubs/Clubs up the price because they know people will pay.

My point though was will people pay their OTT prices this year? Will it effect their long-term business?

I've heard it said in the past that the killing pubs/clubs tried to make on NYE 1999 has come back to haunt them as that's what kicked off people drinking/partying (more) at home. Obviously people buying big tvs and the smoking ban helped though....

I never bother heading out New Years eve because it does be packed beyond belief. But this Christmas Eve and St. Stephen's day in my local this year was pretty empty in comparison to what it used to be. Before you would have had to go down about 4 just to get a decent standing spot on Christmas Eve, but this year it was literally empty till around 10.
I noticed this too. I have not gone out NYE to a pub in many years, always hated it. Christmas eve is the new NYE amongst my mates, it is the time when most will end up in the same place together, NYE has nearly always been a big split up to various places. I heard the 3 pubs I would go to in my area were fairly empty on christmas eve compared to other years when their would be queues outside some.
Its just like Petrol Stations with high prices staying in business. If enough people pay then it doesn't matter
If tesco sold a bottle of petrol for 63cent compared to the exact same bottle being €6.10 in a petrol station you would see the same thing. 15 years back it cost about twice as much for me to drink in a pub, now it is 5 times. Having to fight at the bar for 20mins only to be ripped off for poor quality beer really pisses me off.
