So will pubs and niteclubs up prices (admission + drink) this year and think they'll get away with it despite the recession?

Doubt it. Never seen drink prices (in Navan anyway) go up for one day. Though club admission prices might. Thing is New year's eve has been quieter the last 2 or 3 years. More house parties than anything else, unlike St Stephen's day which has held it's crowds.

I'd imagine in Dublin they will. It was certainly business as usual down in my local over Christmas, with the price of a pint being up about 15% on what it was last Christmas. I'd give it until next New Years and, when the economy is in utter ruin and the greedy pub owners are living hand to mouth for a change, you'll probably manage to find a cheap NYE out on the town. :pac:

Whatever about pubs and clubs... taxi drivers are putting their prices up by 50% that night. Not only is it totally scandalous, i can't see a legal basis for putting your prices up by that amount (on the busiest night of the year) at all.

    course they will, no problem.

Wise up and don't be a chup though.. throw your own houseparty and party like it's 19-2009!

Ah, so they give themselves a nice little pay rise conveniently on the one night of the year when they are making a good nights wages anyway... makes sense...

Yeah if you work in the likes of retail. Taxi drivers don't up their fares on regular sundays.

It was by far the quietest Stephen's night that I can remember since I came of drinking age, about 13 years ago. My local, which normally shuts its doors in the afternoon as it's so packed, had tonnes of standing room. It's a sign of things to come I'd say.

I'm not going out this New Years. The profiteers can shove it. Maybe I'll go out next year if the price of a pint of Guinness comes down by 40% or so.

    House party for me!

A few of my mates are going to a masked ball in the Odeon, i wouldn't bother that place charges nearly 6euro for a pint on a good day!

I see town being packed but people wouldn't spend the extra money

I've saved hundreds this Christmas because there's nobody to feckin go out with. I don't know what the story is but my friends are earning no less than they were last year or the year before yet they're jumping on the bandwagon and staying in plenty.

A pub with an admission charge? If I wasn't working I wouldn't head out, NYE is an awful night with the crowds and queuing

I never bother heading out New Years eve because it does be packed beyond belief. But this Christmas Eve and St. Stephen's day in my local this year was pretty empty in comparison to what it used to be. Before you would have had to go down about 4 just to get a decent standing spot on Christmas Eve, but this year it was literally empty till around 10. House parties are the way to go.

Are there any "normal" night club nights on on NYE or are they all doing some sort of celebratory jobbie - if theres a celebratory thuing on they could claim bigger admission...

Damn me not knowing anywhere to head out on New Years, and having plans with friends changed at the last min...any suggestions where would be good to go in Dub?

House party for me as well. Screw those greedy club and pub owners.

Wouldn't local Dublin pubs charge those prices too? Mine does anyway. Most expensive pint is 4.40 and this is Dublin 2.

Its their pub and their beer they are entitled to charge what they like.
You can choose to drink there or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,658 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

I'll be working in a nightclub tomorrow night, admission will prob be €5 more expensive than normal, like they did on Stephens Day. But drink prices will be the same, but that doesn't matter, its a rip-off anyway. I hate people who ask for bottled water, I feel embarrassed asking for money for it, especially at the price in the club.

But last few NYE in their have been very quiet, so expecting even better/worse(depends on how ya look at it). Meaning that it'll be quieter than expected.

I assume you're alright with the ongoing price fixing as well then?

I know...and I'm delighted. Only work for the nightclub people for 4 hours(the time of the club), so don't care what-so-ever if its quiet and they say it might have to close or whatever. Despite the fact I'd earn that little bit less, I still maintain I'd prefer the sleep.

Pubs/Clubs up the price because they know people will pay.

People who bother going out at all will pay, yes. I'd imagine they'll still get their quota of youngsters in their early-mid twenties although I suspect many of the older crowd will stay at home and, as recession kicks in, pubs will become less and less packed.

The fact of the matter is that a lot of pubs and clubs around the country are experiencing a fairly sizeable drop in custom and yet their prices are still going up. Rather than being competitive in order to survive, they continue to indulge in price fixing, their prices continue to go up and, as a result, many will continue to go out of business. Serves them right.

The money some of these places make, they wouldn't have to drop prices over night, Its just like Petrol Stations with high prices staying in business. If enough people pay then it doesn't matter

My point though was will people pay their OTT prices this year? Will it effect their long-term business?

I've heard it said in the past that the killing pubs/clubs tried to make on NYE 1999 has come back to haunt them as that's what kicked off people drinking/partying (more) at home. Obviously people buying big tvs and the smoking ban helped though....

I noticed this too. I have not gone out NYE to a pub in many years, always hated it. Christmas eve is the new NYE amongst my mates, it is the time when most will end up in the same place together, NYE has nearly always been a big split up to various places. I heard the 3 pubs I would go to in my area were fairly empty on christmas eve compared to other years when their would be queues outside some.
Its just like Petrol Stations with high prices staying in business. If enough people pay then it doesn't matter
If tesco sold a bottle of petrol for 63cent compared to the exact same bottle being €6.10 in a petrol station you would see the same thing. 15 years back it cost about twice as much for me to drink in a pub, now it is 5 times. Having to fight at the bar for 20mins only to be ripped off for poor quality beer really pisses me off.
