I usually only smoke when I'm drunk but I've been considering doing it more often to p1ss off Micheal Martin and his do-gooder brethren.

Dude, he hasn't been Minister for Health for well over four years now.

I've probably smoked just a bit over half a pack of cigarettes in the last 12 months. And 2 cigars. Those were nice. I can see why a chain smoker might become a chain smoker, but I cant get over the awful smell and the awful taste: you have to get me quite full of tasty alcoholic beverages before I find one appealing.

i've smoked 2 cigars and about 3 cigarettes in my life.

one cigar at my brother's wedding.
one at the end of semester 1 of final year (surprised i made it that far).

3 cigarettes were in london when someone - who shall remain nameless - didn't have money for smokes and i drunkingly obliged to buy a pack :D

I am also 1 of these , I actually have 2 left in a 10-box of marlboro reds. Anyone know when they did away with 10-boxes here? I have smoked 8 cigarettes between then and now anyway, hope the lung cancer doesn't kill me.

Unfortunately smoking causes cancer, but at the end of the day we would all die either by smoking, eating or just pure luck!

BTW, i am sick of all the non smokers acting like people who smoke are aliens. We all have vices in life: alcohol, cigarettes, drugs(including cannabis), food etc

I've been doing it for 2-3 years and I'm not fully addicted. What's it to you when we smoke anyhow?
Ah yes. The lesser known partial addiction.

Anyone taking up smoking is a complete ****ing idiot.

Anyone who thinks they won't or can't get addicted is an even bigger fool.

Ask yourself why people still buy them when it's over €8 for a packet.

Fúck it. Go and smoke. More money for the government coffers.

Yea I do, I enjoy a smoke but I am not addicted. Never have cravens for them etc etc. It's normally assosiated with drinking. Some nights I won't smoke when I drink though.

q2002, not everyone smokes because they have to, some enjoy it... believe it or not.

You know that small bit of enjoyment will probably cost you your life right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Was a full timer for about 12 years (30+ a day)...packed it in about 6 yrs back and only smoke now when I drink, which I don't do a lot of either, of late.
Smoke a bit of dope most days which is probably just as damaging as regular smoking, but meh...
+1 for the hatred for people who tap you for fags all night...I've had more than a few heated arguments with those vultures. F*ck off and buy your own.

eh i could of sworn i posted in this thread last night, were my posts deleted?

most people dont talk regularly about how they have tried to quit the disgusting habit but cant and carry on smoking. thats what is annoying iv smoked and im either genetically geared to not get addicted(the exact opposite is true actually) or its the weakest physical addiction ever. its simple lack of will power that prevents people quit. i do loads of bad **** to myself i just dont bitch about how i cant help it and im a victim which alot of smokers i know do.

you want to give up then dont smoke...ever....just dont do it. if you do then carry on and enjoy it but dont pretend your trying to give up when your not

At the end of the day, Nicotine is more addictive than Heroin, Coke, Alcohol, and Hash. Your naive to think you wont get addicted sooner or later.
People that say "I smoke but I am not addicted" are lying to themselves. What you dont realise is your still getting your fix even if its only weekly, etc. You mightnt realise your addicted but for people that smoke only at the weekends try and stop for a few months and see does it begin to wreck your head.

Im a smoker for 7 or 8 years, only when im drinking but Ill now freely admit Im addicted even though I dont smoke 6 days a week, and even less if I dont go out.

My point is NOBODY here is invincible to the addiction so don't start using all the excuses to yourself like "ahh I don't have an addictive personality" or "Ive strong will power, I don't have to smoke when drinking I just enjoy them". Your lying to yourselves just like I did for years.
A smoker is a smoker at the end of the day so don't try and justify it by adding in words like "social" or "part time". Its all the same.
Their filthy and pointless and probably more dangerous than any dioxins youll find in pigs but theyre too much of a money spinner for the government to leave them go.

in equal quantities it is more physically addictive, you dont however get anywhere near as much nicotine in you from smoking as you would form shooting heroin so its not a like comparison

after 24 hours of not smoking there is no physical addiction left its all mental which is why it is simply a lack of willpower that prevents people stopping

i do have an addictive personality and have smoked up to ten cigarettes at one time and i never ever had a craving......i was never considered a 'smoker' though

of course smoking is addictive just nowhere near as addictive as people make out i dont think

I cannot find the link that says heroin is more addictive than nicotine. It is more addictive than alcohol and marajuana is less addictive than caffine ;). It'sdifficult to compare a legal drug and an illegal drug. Of course people are going to take legal drugs. However take two people put one on heroin and the other on smoking. I guarantee the heroin user will get more addicted and do more to get his fix, will also be more damaging in the same time period.

Wrong, I smoke from time to time but I am not addicted. I do not feel the need to smoke but I WANT to. I don't force it into me when I don't want it. I am not addicted. ;)

Just because you lack the willpower doesn't mean I do. You are addicted, I am not. Tough ;)

Some truth here, nobody is invincible, there are people who are completely addicted, and always will be.

I would think that it would cost more for the government in health costs than they make on tax on cigarettes. I don't know why they are not outright banned...? Bootlegging I would guess.

give it time, as I said alot of people dont realise theyre addicted. You sound like so many people Ive met. Im not saying youll ever end up smoking all day fully, Im just saying you are a smoker and theres no denying it.
Its all a long run thing, you can go for years and years smoking "cause you enjoy them", but eventually you will have troubles stopping. Dont get me wrong anyone can give em up if they really want to but it just wont be quite as easy as you had figured it would be.

For how long have you been smoking, smoking 10 at the one time and that being it is different obviously than smoking on a weekly/monthly basis.

Most people start off as social smokers, thats how I started. Im off them now for a good while.

Social smokers IMO or more brainwashed than full time smokers. Social smokers think they are in control(same as I once was) while proper full time smokers know they are addicted.
If your not addicted then why are you smoking? Because your smoking on nights out etc your only sowing the seeds of a severe mental addiction, when I gave up It was the mental addiction that was hardest to overcome.
And if you think you have good will power and all this bull**** then try stay off them forever completely! They are not enjoyable, they taste like crap and you will feel worse in the morning just becasue you wanted something to do with your hands or whatever other reason you give to cover the fact that you are addicted!!
Some smokers smoke 20 a day some only 3-5 and some smokers smoke once a week.

You're talking absolute bollox mate. I've smoked 8 cigarettes between may 2007 and christmas eve this year. I am not addicted, nor will I ever be. I know the health dangers of smoking, I know the price of cigarettes and based on those 2 points I will never become a full-time smoker. You can't come out with blanket statements like "eventually you will have troubles stopping" because it's simply not true.

Edit - been doing this 6 years now.

The very fact that someone can say "I enjoy them" and then claim they are not addicted just goes to show how little they understand about cravings. Social smokers that fully stop are people that never really enjoyed them in the first place and basically got out before it was too late.

    stop so!

I never once said someone will become a full time smoker from it.

Edit: Wylo, have you ever smoked a cigarette? Having one while drinking gives a great relaxing feeling. I've probably had a few this year, and will probably have a few next year. I enjoy smoking one the odd time, it is a nice feeling. I won't become addicted though.

yes, for 7 or 8 years Ive been having a few cigarettes while drinking, which is once every week or 2, often even less , maybe once a month. I neither smoke nor think about them outside these times.
The only difference between me and other people arguing with me here is that I can admit that I would find it hard to fully stop forever and ever!!! Whereas the people that just "enjoy" them seem to think that its grand they can just "enjoy" them for the rest of their lives and not think theyre any way addicted.

Nothing more irritating than a self-righteous ex-smoker. Regardless of whether you smoke or not.

I just got back from 16 days in Ukraine and Russia. Funny to see how different the attitude towards cigarettes is. Ads everywhere, you're allowed to smoke everywhere, and pretty much everyone does. Though at €1 for 20 (the most expensive in St Petersburg, much cheaper in Ukraine), it's hardly surprising.

No, the only difference is that you have a personal perspective on your own habits and are merely transposing those experiences onto everyone else. In other words you're merely generalising and stating subjective opinion as a broad fact. You're not going to win any arguments like that.

There were points in my smoking career when I was addicted, no doubt about it, but addiction is a personal thing and has as much to do with character, genetics, your environment and other diverse factors as it does about the substance you're "addicted" to...personally I had no real problem quitting the smokes; the cravings, what little there were, went away after a few days.
However like others in this thread, I still enjoy a few when I drink, not because I have nothing to do with my hands, not because I enjoy standing out in the cold, not because of any secret cravings but because I LIKE to smoke when I've been drinking, especially spirits.
If all of us part timers were so secretly addicted then why wouldn't we at least have a craving the next morning? I get nothing, no urge for "just the one", no compulsion at all. I'll usually have the remains of a box in my pocket and it'll stay there untouched until the next time I'm having a few...
If that's your definition of addiction then you have a lot to learn...
