best thing to do is to change the software on device to latest tomtom, i did that today with latest 2008 maps and all working good, tomtom actually runs better on the device, faster etc

Do you happen to have a link to instructions?

Is the route66 software on it that bad? I thought Navteq maps were better than teleatlas (Tom Tom) maps for Ireland?

    Software is ok.

Teleatlas used to be far behind. But are equal enough now.
    I find teleatlas better now.

I assume warranty would be gone also if we do this or is all software on the memory card which can be swapped?

nope, warranty wont be voided imo as you can restore everything back very easily, one file on the device internal ram, and restore the sd card using the software on the included cd.

iGo8 is much much better I think. You can even get a skin to make it look like TomTom if you want.

Do some research on it and try it out. It really is way better and has way more features and is highly customisable through skins (and skin related functions) and colour schemes.
Has 3D buildings, 3D terrain contours, lane information, road signs etc
Have a look at www.i-go8.com for where to get updated skins and schemes etc.
I have 07 2008 maps for Ireland and am using 8.3.2 version with Gurjon 5.0 480x272 skin

Sure why not put both on the SD card - a new SD card of course
Also Sygic McGuider is similar and better than Tom Tom

I picked up one of these also.
I actually like the Route 66 Software as I find the search function much easier to use as you can just enter free text as opposed to Country, then City, house number etc...

Well, been using the R66 Mini around and about the NE for the past day or so. Really like the unit, maps are a wee bit dated but the stuff missing wasn't really a big deal (couple of new estates and such). It finds a signal very quickly, the touchscreen is responsive and well lit, the search function is great...haven't managed to stump it yet, route recalc was fast, the UI is pretty nice, although there are some small niggles.
I gave it a run out in the sticks on small back roads around the border and out on the cooley peninsula and it worked a treat...didn't miss a beat. It does r'abouts well too...
This is the first sat nav I've owned (had loan of a nuvi a while back and I think this is slightly better) and for the price it's a belter...I'm happy enough with it as it stands but would be very interested to see any hacks and such that others have mentioned, if they can increase the functionality further then great. Thanks again to the OP.

Bought this in Halfords Liffey valley but I dont think its working
Says getting gps position for about 15 mins now
Anyone know how long it should take?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,200 ✭✭✭deadl0ck

It may be hung (happens sometimes)
Just reset it with a Pen (little button underneath) and try again....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Yep I'd to do that with mine...turned it on whilst the battery was charging. Reset it and plug it into the PC/USB and turn it back on..it should find a signal in less than a minute IME.

sometimes the first fix takes a while to get

yea sent him a pm yesterday asking him also.. take it he didn't pay for the 2008 maps from tomtom.
googled for a few hours last night meself was trying to update the tomtom anyway I was. my r66 is actualy for a present for someone so don't really wana try put it on yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

    Of course he didnt pay.

There are very good places to find this info. Its just sometimes very tricky to get it working on certain pna's
the maxi/mini is winCE 5.0 based so need to ensure you are get the right versions.

    start at www.gpsunderground.com
that will lead you elsewhere (ppc ;-))......

all you need to do anyway is change the apshell.ini file like i mentioned before then get a seperate SD card and put the other stuff on that correctly and launch it from winCE explorer.
Can also get music players, movie players, games etc etc etc
Its basically a small computer running windows and R66 navigte 8 is just a piece of software running on it.

By the way, if you find you need it gps port is 2 with baud rate 38400

Hi All, sorry for late reply, was busy last night, ok here are the steps for getting TomTom on your Route 66 mini, you need to get TomTom Navigator and whatever maps you want to use yourself, www.tomtom.com

How to replace Navigation software on route 66 mini

    1. Install activesync 4.5 on your winxp machine.
    2. Obtain TomTom software for wince device and place the folder in

the root of your SD card, ie SDCARD\Navigator
    3. Create a folder in the root of your SD card called "Program

    Files" ie SDCARD\Program Files
    4. Copy whatever tomtom map you are going to use into the "Program

    Files" directory
    5. Via activesync click the explore button and a windows explorer

should be displayed showing contents of your device. Navigate to

\MyFlashDisk\Shell and copy the APShell.ini to your desktop.
    6. Open the APShell.ini on your desktop in notepad and change the

    line Path1=\SDMMC\ROUTE66\R66Navigate8.exe to read

    Path1=\SDMMC\Navigator\TomTom Navigator.exe
    7. Save this file and copy it back to your device replacing the

    APShell.ini that already exists.
8.Now unplug your device from pc and restart it using the

recessed reset button at bottom of device. TomTom should be displayed after a route 66 bootup logo.
    9. Last step, in tomtom, go to GPS settings and change gps hardware from built in to "Other NMEA GPS receiver", baud as 38400 and use com 2.

Thats it, hope you all enjoy!

If I can help further please let me know.

great stuff man. might actualy try and do it tonight.. does anyone know fit he rout66 maxi one came with a sd card?
Is there any specific software versin that works best on the rout66, shouldi go for the tom tom one version

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,947 ✭✭✭bittihuduga

    great info..thanks for that...

    i have a rac200 with r66 map on it.
1)can i use the above method to change my maps to tomtom?
2)rac200 does not have mp3 player, can we add a mp3 player on it too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

You need to find out how to get into WinCE with RAC device and if it supports activesync.
Then you can put any program on. Has to be compatible to winCE version and CPU version.
There is usually a lot of messing around with different dll versions to get programs to work. Not as straight forward as normal pcs.

Maxi has 512Mb SD card. Your better off getting a 2Gb one for other software. Dont mess with the one that came with the device.
And there was about 20 left in Blanch Halfords last night. Dont think there was any mini's though.
And i think liffey valley is out of both.

iGo8 is and is regarded as the best navigation software to get. For those who like advanced features and highly customisable. Tomtom and Garmin are just too simple to be of any interest. Ok for begineers.

Got me the bigger version in Halfords Tallaght yesterday for €70.

None of the small ones left there or Liffey Valley branch. I was told that the model is not being produced anymore hence the reduction in price. Still get a year's warranty.

In the context of Irish roads, what are 'advanced' features ? Potholes, grannies driving at 30mph ?

Where do you need to go in Ireland that requires 'advanced' features ?

And who uses a sat nav in ireland?
I rarely do. Mostly just to use the thing cos i bought it but know exactly where i am going. Of course local knowledge is much better.

    Best for holidays mainly.
