I took my route 66 on a quick 5-mile spin around South County Dublin this afternoon. So far, it's the best value €40 I have spent in a long time.

Side roads clearly labelled, petrol stations and shops flagged, re-calculation of route done well.

I may be even more impressed if I ever get around to reading the 128 page manual ;) !

It mentions Bluetooth syncing with a phone in the manual on the disc. The review in the original post also mentions it.

Strange that it says nothing about that feature on the outer packaging.

There is a wireless car kit accessory available seemingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

    Goddamn it.
Bought it tonight and thought was suspicious that the seal sticker was broken.
No car charger and memory card in the box and unit did not start from new install and had history items from wexford and waterford.. Damn them

i dont trust sat navs, i was using one on my way down to galway, and considering i live in maynooth so i drive the N4 and M4 on a daily basis i know its the sligo road but it leads on the the M6 (for galway), but when i was passing the maynooth turn off after collecting my friend from leixlip it told me to turn off, then to make a U-turn (on the M4) i turned it off as i didnt need it, my friend turned it back on later to find we were supposedly driving trough fields and it was givig us all sorts of directions.

when we finally got to glaways city (no thanks to the sat nav) it tried to send me down a one way street which i took cause i dont know galway city and ended up having to reverse back down!!! it wasnt fun!!! :(

Lightening bolt, i dont think there are free updates to Q4 2008, I tried the software and you can upgrade the 2007 maps to latest fixed version but cannot upgrade to 2008 Q3 maps without purchasing.

Skuzzb, could you please shed some light on how to install tomtom on this device please? thanks in advance.

you can download Q3 2008 from R66 using R66SYNC software supplied with the unit. it will load and run the mapping fine for around 30 days, then it locks the maps. you need to put 50 holes in your credit card to unlock them again !

..and before anyone asks..the answer is NO, keygens or cracks will not open the padlocks. the decript key is unit specific, with one side on the R66 server, and anyway its illegal.

The unit is only as good as the mapping that comes with it. Its the mapping that let you down in this case. I remember driving through a town in the midlands 3 years ago - it was sending me round in a circle!

They weren't sold out at 7pm as somebody purchased one for me at that time. They're not on display - you need to ask for them.

Its fine for the hardware which is why i bought it. Not the maps or R66 software
Just get into Windows CE and run other programs from there.
Edit APShell.ini in Shell folder on the Flash Disk
    Path1 to \\\Windows\explorer.exe

Still sitting on my desk in the box. I emailed route66 to see exactly what sw / maps are on it now, what versions can be updated to for free, what they can be updated for by paying, and how much. Will let you know once I hear back. Or if I hear back. :)

How do you know that you have to pay after 30 days? It says free software update on their website and I can't see any comments saying you have to pay after 30 days. Could you please provide a link to where you have to pay after 30 days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭thenobody

    Well its Q2 2007 maps
€50 to upgrade to Q3 2008 maps - you can also download county only maps and can also download and pay for maps from anywhere in the world but may need to get another memory card to store them.
    Each county is €10
    Full europe is €99
America (including Canada) is €49.99 - individual cities are €10 if you just want them
    All Q3 2008

Have a look here to browse the prices and options - without needing R66 sync software
    https://secure.66.com/store/

Oh and wireless kit is actually €49.99 from the R66 website. Delivery €9.95 though

Thats a software update. Not a map update.

The maps can be (one only) downloaded for a free trial for 30 days use. Locked after.
So just before going on holidays use up your free trial:P

Ah OK, so what does the software update do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,374 ✭✭✭tw0nk

best thing to do is to change the software on device to latest tomtom, i did that today with latest 2008 maps and all working good, tomtom actually runs better on the device, faster etc

    iGo8 is much much better.

Software update is the same as any other software update. Bug fixes, new features etc etc etc.
Its updating the R66 navigation software on the device.
    Look through the website
