So, 1/3 of poles will apparently leave next year, possibly more after that. Other nationalities will likely have the same idea, can't blame them really after considering the growth prospects for here and there, but this sucks. Immigration brought great things here, will it all go if enough foreign nationals do? Not the most comprehensive poll (...zing..) but if you're a foreign national, are you going to leave us? :( And what do the irish members think eh?

this might have been asked, but story was from today ..meh...

I personally made some great polish friends. Dead nice people who came over here and regarded any work they did, as a blessing to get.
How the economy will be effected has yet to be seen long term but the days of just us living in a single culture of just Irish workers is gone!
Of all those that came here, those that did stay long-term, stayed I think to better themselves and thats to be respected. There's always rotten apples in every barrel but on the vast whole, I would be sorry to see them all leave.

If you look at it from an economical point of view they are doing us a huge favour.

They came in their thousands when we needed them and they are leaving now that we can't afford them.

    Fair play to them.
Wonder will we start seeing Irish people back in low paid jobs now? Or are we too proud

    That's the problem.

The over-supply of housing just got worse

    You're welcome to them :D

Notice that there are 200,000 poles here and 500 were surveyed, about 0.25%. Surely you'd want to survey about 5% to get a somewhat decent idea? I've no idea about statistics, but a quarter of a percent doesn't seem to be enough to be accurate.

But it could work the other way. If thousands of people were to leave they'd take away a shít load of purchasing power with them. This would mean less money in the economy and could cause more jobs losses. Tax revenue will also decrease. So this could be pretty bad.

Personally I am pretty happy that some or most of them are going home... There may be more of a chance for us Irish to get a job. I have no problem with any nationality but I really need a job, and the more non nationals here in Ireland, the less chance I have of getting one. I made a good few friends too, but I got bills to pay and a life to live. I wounder would the Polish and Chinese be as nice to us? ;)

No reason they wouldnt be if they had a labour shortage. Cushion makes a good point!

I would love to learn chinese

Well there's the case that they send a LOT of money back home, so when they leave, the money will stay in the country. As it is there are no jobs, the tax will still be there and so will the purchasing power (One of porters 5 forces :P)

I think it will be best for all if they leave. Sure their economy is decent, right? Just crap pay if I believe it?

There are some great bargains to be had in their shops. Great fruit juices, cheap tastey yoghurts, bread etc.

An email survery, yep that'll be hugely accurate alright.

Like anything it's 50/50. There are some who always planned to go home and as a result send money back there and then there are plenty of contribute to this economy just as much as any irish person. My missus has been here 4 years and is quite the little consumer.

At least 50% of the customers in the company I work for are immigrants who have no problem spending their money.

If you are working here you are paying tax. Even if they send every penny bar the essentials needed for living.

Its a bad thing-it shows how badly the economy is doing.

If 50,000 people were to suddenly leave then Tesco, dunnes and pretty much any other business in the country will notice a drop off in business. This will lead to them not needing or not being able to afford all the staff they have. So while the Polish will be leaving jobs behind, this could be negated by the redundancies that could ensue from the drop off in business.

Even if every single Polish person sent a load of money home, they still need to pay for rent, food and all the essentialls. Money that would be lost if they went home.
