tolls + petrol used (especially when in 2 hr tailback) + overcrowding + most of your saturday gone + poor exchange rate in most places = not worth it

Avoid Newry + Avoid Weekend Shopping + Use ATM for £ + Leave Early = HUGE SAVINGS & WELL WORTH IT

Travel a little extra to Banbridge, Armagh or Lisburn. Whenever I travel to Enniskillen I drive during the week and get there for 9am, I'm loving the savings.

"Damn you Northern Ireland and your cheap alcohol." Says my liver ;)

unpatriotic ha ! if FF (the republican party ?) were half as patriotic as they should have been then all money spent in n. ireland would be ending up in dublin revenue !

What road did you take in, the Sligo road or the Belfast road. On the N3 turn at Butlersbridge onto the the N54 and follow the signs to Enniskillen, you will end bypassing the traffic at the river.

I think he meant bad as in driving conditions not traffic volumes. Enjoy all the savings, but please leave some for us Nordies now kk.

I arrived just after you mate, i drove up from ballinrobe, Mayo. Roads terrible from just after Sligo, especially around manorhamilton. Im comparing my tesco bill from enniskillen to my bills i have from down here. Its shocking the difference.

I'm not many miles away from you. :)

Sligo to Enniskillen is a terrible road in frosty weather - all bends and hills.

I spent nearly 1000euro and definitely saved 400euro compared to buying same items down here.

Can you advise how to miss the traffic coming from Cavan? Will be approaching from Sligo road but don't see any Butlersbridge turn....?

Do you know the roundabout that is near the retail park where Woodies, SuperValu and KFC is? Well if you take the turn at that roundabout that brings you onto the Cavan BYPASS (left turn if coming from the retail park towards Quinn Direct) and go along there for about 5 km there is a turn for Butlers Bridge on the right hand side

you'd need to be out that early to avoid trouble at the mad cow roundabout

no roundabout there anymore and traffic moves smoothly onto M50 from N7

Drove up to Belfast (from Dublin) via Banbridge outlet on Friday before lunch. Figured the tailbacks at Newry would be crazy so turned off at the Jonesborough junction to take the back Forkhill road down to the first roundabout. Turned out that there wasn't any tailback before the first roundabout (just before 1.00) - still it was worth the detour just in case it had been a different story.

The Outlet at Banbridge was pretty quiet. Was surprised tbh.

Popped over to Ikea later that night (8.30ish) and it was pretty much empty. A great time to do your shopping if you want to avoid the crowds.

M1 was busy enough driving down on Sunday evening, but no delays of note.

Update: Left Blanchardstown at 825am yesterday heading to Newry. Did not fanct the mayhem of the dreaded N3 / M50 to M1 so I opted to head out thru tyrellstown, crossing the old north rd (N2 i think ) and merged with the M1 at swords. 25 mins to this point. 1hr from here to Quays carpark. Some traffic on the hill into Newry but no issues compared to weekend posters reports. Plenty of spaces at 10.00am. That said, many Southerners were finished and loading up the cars at 10  The usual suspects - Alco and food.

As previously posted, great deals on beer, particularly 1lt of Smirnoff = 14£ although you can get it cheaper elsewhere in this thread. Very busy inside the shop. They now accept laser in Sainsburys. Er indoors spent 236£ ( maybe 10 bottles of spirits / good wines / beer and a LOT of groceries and Xmas stuff. Reckon that easily 100€+ saved.

Loaded up the car and headed into the stores. Jack and Jones still on € for £ but beware; the selection is poor  you are not getting the selection of down here - still though, worth a look.

Music stores / game stores were thronged at this time ( 11.30am). PS3 bundles going a storm. Wii games ( €55 in Smyths here ) only £29.99 there. Music CDs, DVDs, blue-ray - I seen plenty of savings

TIP: Xavvi in buttercrane has good deals with a little less queues to contend with.

No doubt you'll head for a peep in Buttercrane S.C across the road.

TIP: If you can, take a spot in the Quays car park close to the exit and WALK across the the Buttercrane !

Arrived in Banbridge Outlet at 3.00pm ( Travel time from Quays S.C - 15mins max. When you exit the Quays, turn right and proceed through the town, well signposted, approx 13km. Carpark empty  surprised. Again, one or two units doing £ for € ( Replay clothing was one ) but again, selection not great, particularly in the Nike / Puma stores. Limited siaes in footwear. Largest mens sizes - 8.5 !!!! Uncanny how the decent trainers in the range were all limited sizes ;)

TIP: Try and pick up a discount booklet if you can. Got one last time ( October ) worth 10% - 20% discounts in many of the stores here so good saving to be has if you find things you like.

Example: Pavers shoes here were selling caterpillar boots ( tanned ) for 62£. Same boots were £44 in Buttercrane ! I've been told that they sell here for approx €100:eek:

Left there at 5.00pm - She had to POP in to Smyths ( its like a drug with her :D )which you hit on the way back to Dublin ( along with Currys, Halfords, MFI, B&Q etc ). These stores are at the back of Newry so best left to hit on the return trip.

1 hr from here to M50. No traffic issues from here to the 1st roundabout entering Newry and from here - plain sailing. Hit the M1/M50 junction at 7.00pm, heading for Blanchardstown. I'm sure I dont need to elaborate any further on what traffic fun awaited me here:mad:

All in all, well worth a trip. Particularly, early & mid-week !

    Enjoy :D

Dodzy, you freakishly did EXACTLY the same route/stores/times myself bro and missusses did with the exception of a pet store on the way to banbridge at 3pm in Ashfield enterprise park.

4 of us spent about £2200 in all - got a ridiculous bounty for that (I reckon we saved about €1-1.5k between us all) including an ipod touch (not great difference to south in fairness) and a laptop for her for christmas (saved about $2-300) in Currys down the Newry bypass road.

I bet we got home to Dublin quicker though! 50 mins from Newry to South Dub, 180 kmh most of the way... VTech baby!

Kilkeel is the nearest to Newry. Check their website for other stores nearby. If your going near sprucefield, then goto the Asda in Belfast at the top of the falls. Its just off the M1.

Sainsburys is 8am - 10pm as per their website. Not sure the rest of the stores but I guess they are similar.

no, i'd never heard of them either, certainly none in the north! there is an asda in kilkeel, but it sounds like a bad road. there is an asda off the M1 at belfast (westwood).

Looking to buy a 5MP digital camera for my younger sister and my sister in law for xmas but dont wanna pay more than €50-€60 each.

I seen something like this in argos:

    .ie: http://http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5608139/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CPhotography%7C10390783/c_2/2%7Ccat_10390783%7CDigital%2Bcameras%7C10390834.htm

    .co.uk: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5608139/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CPhotography%7C10198049/c_2/2%7Ccat_10198049%7CDigital+cameras%7C10198098.htm

As i said i need two - tried to check the stock in the argos located in the quays newry (cos its the only one i know of) but there is only one left. Can anyone tell me where i'd find more argos's in the north? or perhaps where i'd find reasonably inexpensive digital cameras?

    Lads,

Take n2 turn off on m1 for Derry. Ardee bypassed, carrickmacross bypassed, castleblayney bypassed, monaghan bypassed - follow signs for Derry. Next village is Emyvale then it's Auchnacloy. From here you are approx 12 miles from dungannon (large sainsburys and Tesco). Drive another 10 miles to cookstown (again well signposted) and you have a large Asda, Tesco, M+S.
Was in the Asda myself last saturday at 4pm. Parked almost beside the front door. No queues for tills, plenty of trolleys, plenty of booze and bargains. One, yes ONE southern reg car in carpark (LOUTH). I'm originally from the country approx half way between cookstown and dungannon. No problem with traffic, parking etc. The amount of stress and hassle you will save will be worth the extra 45 mins or so driving. Also just outside dungannon in a small village is a hidden little shopping gem called linen green. Has a few outlet style shops selling goods at a good discount (helen mcallinden, paul costelleo, foxford etc). Plus a lovely little cafe for the obligutory rest. Don't follow the hordes to newry - find a little piece of shopping nirvana for yourself - obviously now that half the country reads this and invades, you'll have to be early!!

Excellent guide! Coming up from Wexford, is it best to take the N2 turn off at Drogheda, or turn off to Derry on the N53 at Dundalk?

Need to get in Iceland as well as Asda, so Cookstown 1st and then Dungannon! ;) Saw what Newry was last last week - could well do without the hassle of fighting for spaces and sitting in traffic.

What's the story in Derry. I'm heading up there this week. Anywhere good to go for bargains (nothing specific)?

Keep on M1 and you will see the sign for Derry/Ardee N2. You won't have to take any back roads just the motorway and then head for N2. The turn is after the M1 toll (approx 10 miles). You can't miss it. Happy Shopping.

When you get into Cookstown, where do you go to the Asda? is it relatively easy to find?

Just checking.... even the Blu-Ray discs in Asda are much cheaper than even the likes of CDWOW.

Matrix Trilogy Blu-Ray box set Asda €34.82 - CDWOW has it for €40.99

Dark Knight Blu-Ray Asda €19.57 - CDWOW has it for €24.99

Grief.... not sure if I'm going to get all my groceries, electronics, christmas presents and movies all in the car.... oh well, might just have to leave the kids up North :D:D:D
