"the champions league is bigger than the world cup"

A lot of people would say it is. Just search in the soccer forum for the recent club v country thread.
"the top teams in the champions league are man utd, chelsea, barcelona, real madrid and sevilla "

Not that sensational. Sevilla had only recently walked the Uefa Cup and were doing well in Spain. A class side tbh.
"who is cordoba?? nobody knows him"

Well most of the AH massive wouldn't! :pac:
this is a man who is very, very knowledgable on the game

    He is though.

You're right. He's not even half the man Pat Dolan is.

In fairness though, these days even Pat's not half the man he used to be.

dunphy is an idiot, if i wanted to watch comedy i would buy a ticket to see tommy tiernan.

tbh I wouldnt be too fond of Dunphy if his routine consisted of screaming and walking around the studio pulling angry neurotic me against the world faces/body movements.

Much like his idol Roy, Dunphy is a rebel, a class act and stands up to bullies. A true modern Irish media outlaw in the Michael O'Leary mould, he says what he likes (often while pissed drunk) and couldnt give a **** what anyone thinks. Dont always agree with his opinions and he flip flops like nobody else, but it is part of the package :) BBC/ITV punditry is so lame, all nice, cosy, agreeable. RTE punditry is a warzone where lifelong friends temporarily fall out.

    'I don't think he's a thousand percent mentally'

"They (Liverpool) should put Garcia where he belongs - in the dustbin."

"We'll all see through Mourinho. We'll find out he's just a Bengal lancer!"

"Fat and a clown. A fat clown for all to see." regarding Harry Kewell

"You need dictatorships and poverty to produce great footballers." Odd that the Iraqi team never made the finals given Saddams sons unique style of football management

"A decision like that, he must be on acid...(pause)...LSD Bill!!!" on a sub decision of Rafas

After a match ran over time , and the post match had to be rushed to catch up with the scheduling

Bill "Eamon, Im afraid we will have to leave it there, the Desperate Housewives are waiting"
Eamo (grin on face) "Ill be up in a minute ladies!"

And lets not forget how he only narrowly held his tongue when Bill referred to two German defenders getting battered by the muslim (by birth at least) Turkish team as the Twin Towers :p :pac:

Dunphy drunkenly perving over Miriam O'Callaghan, laughing like a little kid during Giles karaoke bit and then getting up and singing a few himself, I quite litreally was crying laughing and my ribs were hurting watching it all. Unbelieveable :D

i cant belive some of the hatered towards dunphy.

some people say he doesnt know his soccer. he knows more then most of us, considering he played the bloody game and has written about it for most of his life.

the guy has character unlike 99% of people on tv. id rather watch someone with a bit of character, wit and knowledge of the game. well thats my opinion anyway.

he's said some crazy things, havent we all. he says things he's passionate about and then changes his mind later - so what!!! he's only saying what he believes at that moment. can we not change our minds???? do we have to stick by our points when we are talking about soccer, of all things!!!

Eamo is an idiot. How anyone can find his "punditry" funny is beyond me. His football knowledge is about as good as a five year olds.

Dunphy would want to let the Ronaldo thing go to be honest, its just boring at this stage every week going on for about 15mins about how Ronaldo's not a real pro (the funniest bit is when he compares him to George Best - a proper pro who walked out on Man Utd about 10 times, turned up for training and games drunk and retired at around 24) when anyone with any football knowledge knows that yes Ronaldo's a petulant, annoying brat but that he's also a dynamic, powerful player and is one of the best in the world. I always found him entertaining but he's getting harder and harder to take seriously. The man changes his mind on players by the week, will write off a guy as a nothing player one day and then say he's a real player the following day, depending on the argument he's making. He's fairly knowledgeable yet gets an awful lot of stuff wrong on players and on teams. The worrying thing is that what he says seems to influence the opinion of so many people out there. Ranting and raving may be better to watch than Sky or BBC, but it doesnt necessarily make for better punditry.

I was wondering before the match how long they would spend in the analysis waffling about Ronaldo, and what they would talk about instead if he had a good game.

Dunphy and Giles surpassed themselves last night. I have never seen such circular thinking. Rooney (whom Giles and Dunphy should just adopt, because they love him soooooo much) who is supposedly the personification of a "Real Pro" was caught blatantly diving twice. Somehow, this had to be Ronaldo's fault. He is a bad influence and Rooney is learning off him apparently. Its great being inside the head of a player like that.

They are really losing the run of themselves.

Wasnt he the man who spoke the words:

I think we have just, for the first time, seen sex between 2 men on the BBC?

After an interview of Garth crooks and 2nnd choice Steve mcLaren?

The panel on RTE is great. I see and have seen football on many many channels (not just UK channels) and these guys on RTE are great.
Lots could have to do that they are not "censored". RTE is the open net, dont have to sell subscriptions and therefor dont have to sell football better than it is.

Anybody got that pic of Pat sitting in Burger king stuffing his face?

Dunphy is brilliant! The entertainment on a champions league night like last night comes after the game when they (rightfully) rip into "clowns" like Ronaldo...

"There's a cancer in the game Bill, it's cheating.." etc.. brilliant!!

I had a feeling he had a few spliffs during the game last night rather than his usual few drinks, he had a right spongy head on him!!

Oh to sit down & watch a game with Dunphy, Giles, Souness and Brady over a few drinks, it's a lifetime ambition of mine!! :D

Personally, I am getting sick of Dunphy's Bullsh;t. His Love of Andy Reid is weak. Yes reid can pass but he cant run for 90 minutes. Six starts for Sunderland does not make him the legend dunphy is making him out to be.

...I just find he's a total idiot. No knowledge of the game on the continent, selective criticism of players he just (for whatever reason) doesn't like and selective defense of those he deems decent invdividuals, regardless of whether they're any good or not. Yet when criticizing he'll nit-pick to find something about their game he doesn't like or he believes they're usless at. He contradicts himself time and again.

He can't pronounce names to save his life. OK not very important but surely if you're to know about something and the people involved you at least get their names right. Even last night when he was trying to pronounce 'Vallodolid', it was embarrassing.

And as well as another poster mentioned, him saying Ireland have better players than Inter!

Having said that I still kinda like him and I love watching him! He's so funny!

I can't believe it took so long for someone to mention this! Genius!

RTE have by far the best punditry, anyone who thinks different should be sentenced to a lifetime of watching Andy Townsend on the sideline on ITV

Dunphy is great entertainment, but I wouldn't agree with some people that he's a football expert! It's good having Souness on the show with some knowledge of modern management. Like when giles and dunphy do their usual rant "He's not tracking back bill, you got to get the basics right". Souness was able to say that fergie doesn't want strikers tracking back, he wants them in the box and to save energy so they can make runs late in the game. But dunphy and giles just ignore it!
Also, this season in the Champions League, Chelsea were (according to dunphy) miles ahead of anyone because they had a good result! Then next week Man-u had a good one and it was "Chelsea AND Man-u are miles ahead of anyone". Then a couple of weeks later man-u have a bad performance "they're no good bill, they lack a leader". Ehhh, they're european and premiership champions eamonn!
It's funny that giles thinks that Eamonn is an expert on Spanish Football, just cos eamonn watches the odd La Liga game on Sky Sports. "Valencia are the team to beat bill, their so good that Aimar can't even get into the team" - That's because Aimar now plays with Zaragoza Eamonn!
Any time man-u play bad he thinks fergie has "lost it" and still brings up the signings of Kleberson and Djemba Djemba!
    Xavi6 wrote: »
And who could forget the hilarious and horribly libelous claims directed towards Rod Liddle - "That's the fella who ran off and left his wife for a young one!"
And dunphy repeated his hatred for Rod Liddle on the Gerry Ryan show the next morning. But then he was on another radio show about an hour later, and Rod Liddle was on too, and Dunphy licked his ass so much it was embarrassing! (Sorry for the mental image!)

I think the mutton-headed Dunphy should get a FAIL.

He kinda tries too hard for controversy, sometimes its embarrassing to watch/listen. Don't get me wrong, he has a lot of valid points and expresses some of them extremely well but some of the crap he says is simply not necessary.

Bully for Eamonn for being honest but sometimes he doesn't know when to stop. Has anyone ever heard him say sorry before? I want that as my ringtone, t'would be best kinda in a Crazy Frog styleee!

I think Gile and Dunphy are well past their peak but still entertain more than any other pundits. If they go you are left with another version of bbc/itv/sky jamie innit. Their routine gets a bit repetitive after a while "honesty of effort" stuff, 5 minutes on Ronaldo each time Utd play while never stressing any of the positives, Dunphy giving out about Liverpool/Rafa. I don't mind that though.

I prefer that they overdramatise things than become Shearer, Lineker etc. God knows after a dull 0-0 we need some cheering up.

RTE don't get much right but at least their footie coverage is entertaining. In 10 years time the RTE panel will be much changed and this will be remembered fondly as a golden age of punditry :D

I don't see anyone coming along to take up the mantle. The newer set like Whelan, Cunnigham, Irwin etc are all nicey nice. It doesn't have to be controversial, just a bit more passion.

only in ireland would we find the likes of dunphy knowledgeable or dustin the turkey funny

jamie redknapp played the game at a much higher level for a much longer time and i don't see anyone praising him for his views on sky

i uploaded dunphy videos a while back to a forum that consists mostly of american, british and aussie sports fans, they couldn't believe how much of an idiot he was, he makes this guy jim rome look reasonable :D

I suppose you could argue the reason no one praises him for his views on sky is that he is a bad pundit. Whats his playing career got to do with his punditry skills, 2 different jobs. Would I ask Jamie to drive the trai....

Jamie sits perched on the edge of his chair looking at the other guy like he's a puppy and the other dudes a tennis ball...he's just waiting for him to throw the damn ball. He jumps on any answer they give and trys to either agree in a way that makes him seem more knowledgable or disagree very strongly and when he disagrees he always is turned in his chair toward them...he talks so much ****e aswell. I don't hate him though, I find it funny. Still RTE all the way!
