Teenage X Factor hopeful Eoghan Quigg is on course to win this year’s title – having topped the voting every week so far.

He has won an army of fans and is “comfortably” ahead of nearly all his rivals, sources said yesterday.

Last night bookies slashed their odds on the 16-year-old winning after a flood of bets were placed.

One show source said: “Eoghan’s captured the public’s imagination this year.

“It’s like the George Sampson effect in Britain’s Got Talent – an innocent-looking young lad is attracting huge numbers of votes.

"He was singing first last weekend, which is normally the worst position possible, but he still beat all-comers. It’ll take a miracle for anyone else to win the series this year.”

Bookies said punters had been beating down their doors to back him.

Darren Haines, of Paddy Power, said: “All the money this week has been on him. We’ve slashed him from 11-2 to 9-2 and he’s breathing down the necks of the favourite now.”

Bookmakers still make Diana Vickers the favourite but they expect Eoghan, from Ulster, to overtake her within days.

Diana, 17, who missed last week’s show with laryngitis, was due to get the all-clear today.

A spokesman said: “It’s a big night for Diana and she knows she has to sing her heart out but she’s still not 100 per cent.”

Meanwhile, Britney Spears has said she will appear in two weeks’ time for “the raunchiest performance ever”.

Producers reckon her appearance – following Mariah Carey’s last week – will increase the ratings gap over rival Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1.

    Diana could be losing voters

No. He's been consistant throughout the competition. He hasn't been the best singer out of the bunch every week, but he's always put in a strong and solid performences and his covers of Ben and L-O-V-E were brilliant imo.

I thought L-O-V-E was his worst he was very shakey and they could not put it down to nerves, but then these are just are opinions !

Ruth: "So thankful that she was able to sing one of the best songs Britain has given to the world"

I thought it was written by some bloke from Glasnevin??

    S/he wasn't thanking you.

Bah, there's no way Diana will go if she's in the bottom 2. The judges will save her.

The recap there of Yellow makes me die inside.

    Horrible.

If the public voted without being biased, it should be JLS and Daniel in the bottom two.

However, since I know that's not possible, I'm guessing Rachel and Ruth (not her fault, entirely Dannii's).

Diana is def trying to imitate Alanis Morrisette, I'm convinced. I doubt she was even around when she was big. grrr

I am sick to death of hearing that song 'Angels', hate it. I had sort of discounted Eoin early doors cause I didn't think he had the voice but he has been solid every week and his voice is stronger than I'd given him credit for. I thought his and Alexandra's performance were the best tonight. Diana's sob story to end, please.

Ruth is actually quite good in a lot of ways. She can sing (ok, she needs a bit of work but has the bare essentials, presence, attitude, etc). Everyone was up in arms last week over Laura. I never liked Laura. I knew she would not win. She was gobby and annoying and her faux shyness really bugged me. She had a good voice yes, but without a personality, presence or much else to pull it off, her exit was inevitable.

Ruth is certainly very passionate. My husband reckons she is like a female Meatloaf!

Eoghan - forgettable. Every week I say that same thing, the competition would certainly be fine without him

Diana - my initial favourite - at least she is quirky and different but I am worried about her safety what with her below par performance tonight and the fact that people will want her out for not singing last week.

Alexandra - getting better each week. She has more stage presence than Leona ever did in the competition and her voice is getting better and better

JLS - cannot take to them at all.

Daniel - time to go I am afraid. 15 minutes is well and truly up

Just my opinion now so please no one attack me for it!!!
