No offense moosejam, but 2 things got me:

1)10 minutes is hardly fair time to appraise a game with 100 hours of gameplay (about 20 for the main quest).

2)There are shortcut keys for the weapons. Even so, and its been said 100 times, its an RPG, don't judge it solely on its shooting, there is so much more to this game.

But in the end everyone is entitled to their opinion. Maybe play it for a day and see if you enjoy it more, it would be a shame to pass up the experience.

well maybe it was 30 minutes, I escaped the vault and made it into town, there were a few things which bothered me, firstly the weapon switching but I didn't know about the keyboard shortcuts, the map was very offputing firstly you had to go into the pips to see it which basically made it worthless, you couldn't walk around with the map open to see where you were going, secondly it was blurry, why the hell did they make it blurry, were they attempting to give you a headache because if they were they succeded, another thing was combat, granted it was the first gun I got, the 10mm I believe it was but needing to shoot someone 10 or 15 times to drop them is a total joke, I'm sure I put maybe 15 rounds into the first guy I met and many of those were into his head, I think it was at that point I said enough, I couldn't stomach another impossible to kill enemies game, I'd just finished farcry2 and that was one of the few bad points - enemies that took too many shots to drop. Other bad points were character animation, facially they looked like computer game characters, the characters in farcry looked like real people, not that thats a deal breaker but small things add up, secondly their animation was terrible very wooden, and as I said before the world had no realism to it, it wasn't that the graphics were terribly bad, if you looked close they were fine but the world just didn't feel real at all, unlike farcry 2 where the world was amazing, it was really like being lost in Africa for a few hours.

For anyone interested btw, mods and tweaks have already turned up. Thankfully Oblivion modders have not been cowed by the lack of official tools. Must try a few of these myself:

    Level Cap Increaser:

UI tweaker to be less "console"y:

uninstalled this after 10 minutes, didn't grab me at all, having to go into the pimp thing to switch weapons is enough to turn me off, haven't they heard of the scroll wheel, graphics werent great as mentioned, the world just didn't seem real at all, just like some badly generated images of buildings dumped on a flat ground, going to try hells highway

Stick to Gears of War 2 mate.

You need to give this game a bit more time. Have to say I was a little underwhelmed in the beginning. Wasn't massively impressed when I got to Megaton. I don't know why, I think I was perhaps expecting just another RPG. Then the game came alive. My initial reaction now seems completely alien. I love this game completely. I can't remember a game where being evil is so much fun. ~A lot of the fun is made by the game but a lot, you make for yourself.

    Got to the bit where
you go back to the vault and after, they kick you out. Well, the cheek of them. Cue murder rampage.

Quests have compass markers, follow them. The rest is to be explored. If you double click on a map marker you have been to you port there. So map travel starts to become very fast after a while. I have no idea what you mean by blurry, its supposed to be a tiny LCD screen on your wrist.

Its a RPG, takes a while to be a headshot killing monster. Depends on a number of factors, the type of weapon, the type of enemy, the condition of the weapon and your equivalent skill in said weapon.

Farcry used the same 20 character models, and in terms of area size and work gone into it, it was about a fifth of the effort gone into Fallout.

    yup, only unreal.
when you come out of raven rock and he is stomping about with a gatling laser.. simply savage!!

    And now you do

Fair points, I'm not saying the game is rubbish just that I didn't like it straight off, but I'm the type to drop it if I'm not liking what I see after a few minutes, that might not be very fair on the game and it's probable if I stuck at it I might be loving it in a couple of hours, but sticking with a game in the hope it will get better isn't the best move what with all the other great titles waiting to be played, there's only so many gaming hours ! I switched to hell's highway and I'm enjoying it so far

Finished the main quest this evening. Took about 16 hours. Loved every minute of it. Best game I've played in a long long time. Wanted to spend more time exploring but kept on getting dragged back into the story and finished it before I realised. Have started a new game and am going to be completely evil this time.:P

can anyone tell me how much of the story is left?
ok, so i convinced president eden to self destruct the enclave and got outside where I met fawkes. next thing is to report to elder lyons

I dont wanna finish the game yet. having fun stomping about with fawkes, sploring up north of the city where i hadnt spent much time yet.

lvl18 and about 30 odd hours in btw

Just started playing - messin around in Megaton at this stage - restarted the game after arriving at megaton initially because i knew I had rushed the start and wanted to ensure I didn't miss anything.

Hate havin to pick the attributes. Always worried I'll pick the wrong stuff!!

Your right at the end. There is one main quest part left. Go do you exploring now.

I finished it earlier as well, being a massive goody two shoes. Definatly going to play as a heartless bastard next time. The only thing i regret doing is focusing on the science/lockpick/speech skills on my first play through. I always enjoy picking them on my 2nd play through, as they generally open up a load of new choices/quests.

See, this is what I love about this game, the little touches. For example:
In little lamplight the mayor of the town is called RJ MacReady.

Thanks. I did the same sci/lock/speech run through the game, they seemed pretty mandatory to me.

    cant lockpick? no money.
    cant hack? dead by turrets.

what I totally wasted points on though was sneak.. i NEVER used it. pickpocketing was standard practice in fallout 2 but in this one...?

if you need it, use a stealthboy. they are friggin everywhere anyway

do turrets get harder ? i find if i meet a turret a couple of rounds from a rifle or combat shotgun takes it down before it can do any damage.

Sneak is great thanks to the crit. bonus you get. A stealthy headshot with that android's plasma rifle you get from Rivet City insta-kills a load of baddies. Mind you I have energy weapons 100 + 9 Perception.

You're right about the Stealth Boys. I have hoarded about 30 of them back at Tenpenny Towers.

I just went cruising around the wasteland killing raiders and the like. I'm completely in love with the Hunting Rifle. At first I thought it was ****e due to the bolt action trying to run and gun but in V.A.T.S mode in the wastes it really comes into it's own. Ammo is plentiful, a headshot does a load of damage and the gun looks and feels nice and meaty.
I'm not a fan of the Chinese Assault Rifle, just feels kinda dull.

So far I've gotten completely sidetracked from the main quest. ended up exploring most of the eastern wasteland bringing justice everywhere I go

Best fun is roleplaying. My character looks like your average survivor, long hair, beard, pale from life in the vault. Small guns aren't as powerful as energy or as accurate but it does seem more in character to be using rusty pre-war rifles.

I'm extremly impressed with the improvements over Oblivion (the ability to change hair with the robot barbers and faces with the surgeon is a brilliant touch)

How do you look at your character. In Oblivion I could zoom around him but in this I just get to see the back of his head.

I think if you zoom out (roll the mouse wheel), you can hold down mouse 3 (middle mouse button), and rotate the camera around

Same way as in Oblivion. Hold down the change view key, and move the mouse.

I actually think that aspect is completely pointless. Why spend ages customizing your character at the start if you can just drop in to a Plastic Surgeon and change it later. And its not as if you spend that much time looking at your character anyway.

Maybe you don't, but when you have a sweet hat & a flaming sword(!!), you just gotta have a look-see at every opportunity :D

i made my character look like me, which really added something to the cinematics during VATS and getting killed etc.

I'm playing as a female character. I spent a while selecting the right haircut. Does that make me gay?

I love it. It makes the game more realistic and allows you to change your characters skin tone to represent more time spent under the sun.

I don't really bother with the face customization though. I like my flawed character.

Although it's a shame that there isn't a level editor.
I want leather armour with the specs for combat armour.
