The cacti contain mescaline, but are sold as biological samples, not for consumption.
The seeds were of fairly unknown flowering plants and contain LSA. Again these seeds are also not sold for consumption

Please don't tell lies hammered hippy. They were being sold for consumption. They are sold to muppets at a big markup.

Mushrooms grow free in Ireland why buy dodgy stuff from price gouging scum?

So let me get this right. A guy opens a shop that sells stuff that both legal and illegal. The old bill raid the shop and nick him for selling the illegal stuff.

    And this is victimisation because?

So all these plants are sold in headshops to grow plants???

if you want a shrub go to a garden centre. These Headshops sell these seed for consumption so therefore they are illegal.

I have to wade in on this one. First off a link I found in about .5 seconds:

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/1106/headshop.html

NO ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES SEIZED. NO. ILLEGAL. SUBSTANCES. SEIZED.

Have we all got that? No laws broken, only a 'licencising' issue. Also, sopme people are saying that seeds can be sold for growing but not for consumption.

Think about that for a minute.

    Just a minute.

There you go. Doesn't make sense, that? Hmm?
Either something is legal, or not. End of. It doesn't matter where it's being sold. Legal, or illegal. That's it folks.

    Yep, reckon so.

'ceptin' now you can be fined for being 'drunk' in public.

Well, I suppose they've got to re-fill the State coffers somehow...

Wait...... I can still smoke dried out banana skins and eat 7 teaspoons of nutmeg if I want to right?

The stuff targeted were cacti and seeds of decorative flowering plants.
The cacti contain mescaline, but are sold as biological samples, not for consumption.
The seeds were of fairly unknown flowering plants and contain LSA. Again these seeds are also not sold for consumption
LOADS of these seeds can be found in loads of flower shops and DIY shops. They sell the same seeds with LSA in them. They didnot get raided.
The raid was a nationwide coordinated attack. I can think of other countries in the past where certain shops were raided nationwide with consent or even stimulation of goverment ..it all reeks of intimidation.
Ahh well that's fair enough then.
As long as it's not for consumption.
It's not like an alcoholic would drink methylate spirits. After all, that's not for consumption.

Actually it was not a Dublin politician who was shouting for this it was a gap toothed bogger from Galway. Fidelama Healy Eames,

All the shouting started when the head shops started opening in provincial towns and the problem of youth using mind altering drugs (exp alcohol) became visible one to bog politicians.
So she lacks credibility because she's not from Dublin?
    Interesting.

    Indeed.

Don't try to tell us that people who frequent headshops are not trying to get off their tits. We're not idiots. The type of people who use these shops are going to take any sort of crap as long as it's marketed to them in an appealing way.

    Remember, weed makes you paranoid.

If all the stoners start heading to gardening shops to buy the same products will the government ban them there too?

I can't wait for this. I'm gonna go and protest outside Woodie's!

Selling anything with Mescaline in it was a big no-no. That was completely taking the piss. Of course people are going to buy it and try extract the Mescaline for recreational use. Up until now I'd imagine the Cops and Politico's were dying for some reason to go in and wreck the place but had nothing until this. Normally I'm all in favour of head shops and being liberal, but ffs, selling anything with Mescaline in it is pure taking the piss. There's no way you would get away with it.

And the Headshops should have never started opening in the country. They will all be closed by Christmas I'd say. It's one thing in a overly urban environment, but I've noticed they've opened up in my ole' home(kip)town of Portlaoise. I can only imagine the cue's of people lining up to get in there and get mad out of it...

You can't stop people from opening shops.

Also a lot of headshop products aren't dodgy. salvia and kratom are good products, both completely legal. Cactus is a good product, however legality is questionable. Does this mean there'll be no more cactus in head shops:(?

Watch, they will. Some muppet will take a dive off a 4-storey apartment block while taking something he got in a Head shop (along with a load of beer, but you won't see that getting banned) and hey, presto! Mary Harney will ban it! I wish it wouldn't happen, I think Head shops take people out of the illegal drug trade of buying ecstasy off scumbags.

You can snort anything you want. You just won't feel any effects from a snortable amount.

I for one welcome the raids. I can forecast the outlawing of all their wares quick smart.
Speaking as a chemist, alot of that stuff is far more dangerous than anything a dodgy back street dealer could sell you.

There is a huge difference between a chemist (works in a lab) and a pharmacist (has a shop).

You cannot compare the herbal stuff from these places to the cut crack and cocaine being sold in the underworld.

When was the last fatality involving a BSP or Ecstasy in Ireland in recent years if any?

I am personally not a fan of any of this stuff but I would prefer to see the youth of today purchasing their wares over a shop counter in Templebar than dealing with some unknown hood up a dark back lane.

Ireland is probably the last outpost in the western world where you can buy this stuff over the counter. Count your days numbered as the EU net is closing in.

There's loads of drugs out there, the government is only scratching the surface. These head shops make a lot of money. The market has already been created, legal highs are here to stay.

Not if Europe if it developes the American approach to drugs. Soon all our drug laws will be dictated from Brussles and Harney will be off the hook on any new measures brought in.

The american Approach is totalitarian and there is no room for the cat and mouse game that has been going on here over the last decade. In the States you can even get done for licking a frog.

Yes, America recently had a War on Drugs.

    Drugs won.

Bzp was the first of this new wave of legal drugs. Look how long they took to ban it. Then think of all the countless drugs out there that haven't been discovered yet (the profits have reached the point where there are actually people paid to research any possible chemicals with possible recreational potential. The public and the government will lose interest pretty fast, coupled with the fact that Irish attitudes towards drugs are changing this will mean the legal highs industry will remain intact.

-EDIT; Idiot! you're not supposed to lick the frog directly, you'll get higher if you milk it's glands, and then using a vapouriser inhale the secretion.

Besides, codeine and DXM are all the rage nowadays :D.
