Never been there, so open to a challenge on this, but I always got the impression it was a very conservative, judgemental place, which is what put me off. That said, it probably depends on what part you go to.

It definitely depends on where you go, as it would in most western type countries. I can't see the likes of San Fran being too conservative.

If Obama wins (please god he won't) it will be funny to see the bleeding hearts actually showing kudos towards America again. The real shame however is that the US Constitution stops George W. Bush running for a third term, he will long be remembered as America's greatest President of Modern times.

Obama is the smoothest motherfucker on the planet right now.

Also, everything you wrote was crazy, i'd seek professional help.

I met a few Americans here in Germany and to be honest you couldn't meet nicer people. They are all cool and very friendly and were really interested in what life in Ireland was like and knew where it was even! All of these Stereotypes about Americans being thick as bricks are just not true. Also Germans are very friendly and laid back too despite the Stereotypes! My point! Now the French on the other hand.....................

I live a few hours south of Chicago and love it. My neighbours are lovely people. Never had any problems living here and having plenty of fun.

America is still cool, but we're a hell of a lot more familiar with it these days than we were in the early '90s, since more of us have probably been there now.

What I couldn't get over (in NYC) was that it felt more like any of the regular big cities I'd been to (London, Paris, Madrid) than the New York I'd seen on the movies.
I got that feeling from New York too, I went to Vegas then stopped off in NYC for two days on the way back. NY had a more European vibe to it despite looking like nothing I'd ever seen before.

A stupid question obviously, but when I was growing up back in the 90's America was a magical dream land of pepsi, beach babes, cool cars and rock bands. I couldnt wait to visit the place and when I did I was blown away by New York , Chicago , LA, San Fran etc

Seems like most stuff ya hear about America is negative... Mad for war, Mad for guns, Mad for having dumb presidents... etc etc

That was the Clinton effect. It made people forget about Ronnie Raygun, Tricky Dicky and the other characters and disasters.

It should be pointed out that there are at least two Americas, with differing populations. One is different to us, but they're good people, and it'd be a boring world if we were all the same. The other is so out there, its become impossible to tell their views from satire, and its a more dangerous world because of them.

Theres nothing wrong with firearms, btw. Its what people do with them that should be the concern.

I was in Tennesse and Georgia during the summer. People are rediculously polite tbh.
Kinda like the way people who've never been to Ireland mistakenly believe Irish people to be.

I'm in Cleveland right now till January.
I have not seen one Obese person while I've been here. see much more back home tbh.

The fat people stay inside LOL.

Yah. I don't want to America for fear of Obama Osama bin Laden

You don't see them chamlis because one of them dies every 45 seconds of a heart attack. Look down mate, you're not on a perpetual bouncy castle.

I've lived here in Connecticut for 16 years. Love it except in January-March when the weather is brutal. I'm 45 minutes from Manhatten and 2.5 hours from Boston yet there are farms etc 15 minutes away. People around here are friendly and not as whacky as some place especially down South. Went back to Galway last weekend for a few days and couldnt wait to get back here again.

I lived in San Francisco and had the best of times and the worst of times there.

I clearly remember the day my brother picked me up at the airport and drove me around the city. It was a bit of an eye opener seeing so many homeless people and homeys on the streets.

    Japan is waaaay cooler

Out of interest, how are people defining the word "cool" here?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I guess at one stage Coca Cola, Levi jeans, bandanas, Miami Vice and Guns and Roses were cool. But its all so passe now. America needs to reinvent herself because she is so0 daggy now :D

is america still seen as cool by the irish, i would say no, southeast asia, south-america are the new cool places to visit these days

in terms of landscape and cities however the usa is unrivalled on planet earth imo, in the same country you have the hottest desert/place on earth (death valley) and one of the coldest places (northern alaska), alaska also has a mountain with a much larger rise than everest (denali). The golden sands of florida to the some of the worlds greatest surf in california, the stunning grand canyon to the equally amazing yellowstone with its geysers. the list of outstanding national parks is endless each one completely different from the next; yosemite, bryce, zion, arches, monument valley, teton, everglades, rocky mountain, badlands, Hawaii Volcanoes, Sequoia, wind cave and so on and so on. it would take you a life-time to see them all.

the same with cities like san francisco, new orleans, las vegas, miami, orlando, new york, seattle, chicago, denver all completely different all offering something unique. you can't say the same thing about england or many other countries, manchester, birmingham, newcastle, leeds all look alike, same city center, same stores.

T'was cool in the early 90's when I was a kid. It was the place where the teenage mutant ninja turtles were from, where crazy shoot outs and explosions and alien invasions and all sorts of cool stuff would take place.

Then I grew up, plus bush became president. I stopped falling for all the propaganda spewed out by US tv. I remember viewing the americans as the good guys in the likes of the Vietnam war. When it was really the Vietnamese.

I came across 3 people from the US having a debate about what year 9/11 happened.

I could not fcking BELIEVE that one. It actually depressed me it was so stupid.

But at the same time I meet a lot of sound people from the US also.

I also agree with this :

Its just a pity about the whole world domination thing. :(

Why does Superman seem to be straining to operate that printing press using a handle that is clearly designed to be operated by a human. He's supposed to be super strong isn't he? I mean he's turned back the world, stopped aeroplanes in mid air etc. and yet he seems to be having a tough time turning that handle. Sometimes I think he puts it on for the cameras.

At around 17 or 18 seconds it sounds like she says some Americans can't locate it on a map because "Osama..."

I thought she was going to go off on a complete nut job rant about Al Qaeda subverting the American education system.
