A stupid question obviously, but when I was growing up back in the 90's America was a magical dream land of pepsi, beach babes, cool cars and rock bands. I couldnt wait to visit the place and when I did I was blown away by New York , Chicago , LA, San Fran etc

Seems like most stuff ya hear about America is negative... Mad for war, Mad for guns, Mad for having dumb presidents... etc etc

It was always mental , though heavily disgused under propaganda which george bush isnt very good at.

I'm hoping to go to Chicago next summer so I hope it's still "cool".

I think the thing is it has a lot of appeal because we are drowning in American culture here. They speak English (well, in most places) and it's a lot more appealing than the UK cos the weather's better and there's no colonial hangover.

I think Australia is the new "cool" place to go, for the same reasons that I gave for America, except the cultural influence. Although, I think Australia's too far away for me.

If Obama wins (please god he won't) it will be funny to see the bleeding hearts actually showing kudos towards America again. The real shame however is that the US Constitution stops George W. Bush running for a third term, he will long be remembered as America's greatest President of Modern times.

Ah come on now , leave the politics out of it a bit .

    Ford Mustang Cool

    Knight Rider / A-Team cool

Guns N Roses / Metallica Cool

I was gonna say Michael Jackson cool ....but forget that :pac:

    Ya know what I mean

I was in Tennesse and Georgia during the summer. People are rediculously polite tbh.
Kinda like the way people who've never been to Ireland mistakenly believe Irish people to be.

I'm in Cleveland right now till January.
I have not seen one Obese person while I've been here. see much more back home tbh.

The cultural influence is huge doubt about it - evertything we watch , listen to and wear is similar , it seems everyone is kinda kickin back against that now a little.

Funny you mention the UK , my perception is that we're all like best mates now, we have more in common than less so.

I have no impression whatsoever of what Chicago is like (windy, maybe). Are there any films set there that might right this heinous wrong?

I don't think America was ever as cool as, say, Brazil.

America doesn't care what any other country thinks of it, which kinda makes it cool.

Southern States are amazing . I was there a couple of years ago ...drove from Miami to Texas over three weeks . A real eye opener ... and the friendliness of the people was at times embarrassing. I get what your saying about the Irish people statement too.

Americans are cool it's just their government, military and top earners that ruin it for everybody. Every American I've met has been sound and those that travel are definitely cool. Their so aware of the reputation and go out of their way to be nice.

I remember that as well - all the football/basketball/baseball merchandise was really popular. You only really see the occasional NY yankees hat these days.

I don't think it's as cool anymore, maybe because we are much more like them now, so it doesn't seem a million miles away from our culture (e.g. all the teenagers with their OMG!!!!! talk). Also, maybe because it's so much cheaper to get there these days, it's not that exclusive.

I think you misunderstood me there.

I meant Irish people would want to go to America more than the UK becuase of the "800 years" and all that.

America cool? We having another ice age? America stopped being 'cool' years ago.

Democrats are cool, Republicans aren't. :D

Seriously though, I do think America's pretty cool - if someone I know or someone or my family knows is going to America, it's a huge thing. The reaction is always "America - WOW" as if it was on a ddifferent planet or something.

I'd love to go to America someday. And Canada.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,840 ✭✭✭Trev M

Yeah I understood you ... the 800 years an all of that seems to be somewhat reconciled amongst the majority and relationship seems to have improved ...hence my perception remark.

America is still cool, but we're a hell of a lot more familiar with it these days than we were in the early '90s, since more of us have probably been there now.

What I couldn't get over (in NYC) was that it felt more like any of the regular big cities I'd been to (London, Paris, Madrid) than the New York I'd seen on the movies. Another thing I was surprised at was just how sweet, friendly and polite most people were, even though US media portrays New Yorkers as extremely rude and aggressive.

But if you want to go somewhere cool, go to Tokyo. To see the neon and all the fashion on show in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza or Harajuku, is just phenomenal. At times I just had to lie down - I was getting overload!

meh its ok...never thought of it like that, just a place to live. I'd say if you live there its like any other place, you either like it or you don't.

Never been there, so open to a challenge on this, but I always got the impression it was a very conservative, judgemental place, which is what put me off. That said, it probably depends on what part you go to.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.
