Following on from some of the debate in the are you proud to be a cracker thread, I decided to do a poll. So the question is are you proud to be <insert nationalities here> or do you think it is just an accident of birth and nothing to be proud of. Do you care that you are Irish, English etc. or is it meaningless to you? Would you dust off your nationality and leave without a backward glance if you were given an opportunity elswhere or do you carry your nationality abroad and take pride in it?

    No I am not
Hmmmm I have dual nationality (Australia by birth, Ireland by parents) and am glad to be associated with both countries. I take an interest in both sets of politics, news etc and cheer for their teams in sports.

However, I draw the line at being a member of the Eire 32/Wolfe Tones/Celtic brigade.

There's always one:rolleyes::D I agree about the wolfe toneless etc. thing something I am not proud of!

It is just an accident of birth and nothing to be proud of. It is meaningless. I would dust off my nationality and leave without a backward glance if I were given an opportunity elsewhere.

I've never understood why anyone would take pride in something that was purely an accident of birth coordinates.

Not fussed. I am what I am but like the other posters, don't like the whole Celtic/Wolf Tones thing.

I am pride of my nationality, I love being Irish, I think its horrid that people dont take pride in this .. Again i hate the Eire32 brigade!

    No I am not
I'm proud of my country. Its achievements, its international image etc, sure, there are things about it I detest but overall I'm quite happy to tell people my nationality.

I love the way some people think that the only way to make multi culturalism work is at the expense of homogenising everyones differences.

I am proud to be irish, I'm also a republican, who doesnt like the Wolfetones and detests soccer?? Great the way you lump everyone in together like that.

I dont get comments like yours...

I actually dont like the "patriotism" that surrounds Ireland in recent years. Mostly done by people wearing Liverpool (England) or Celtic (Scottish) jerseys. Who do they support in the Irish League? "No one bud, that league is sh*te"

They are so proud of their heritage, all they know of their native language is "Tiocfaidh Ar La" and "Pog mo Thoin"

    ****ing idiots.

But that wasn't the question asked! Every country has it's idiots, and you can be patriotic without being a bigot!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 358 ✭✭sparky360

    Indeed! Sorry about that!

I am not patriotic, i dont see why I should be. As was stated before, I am proud of what I achieve (although that doesnt leave me much to be proud of)

Without draggin this thread down, i totally agree with you, but normal, genuine people who are patriotic, are now being lumped in the same group as these ars*holes, I just think its not right.

You can barely show any interest in the history of Ireland lately without being blasted a Ra head, If you agree with something some IRA man done 40 years ago, your a shinner.. its ridiculous.

Apologies for the off-topicness.. wont happen again!

Proud to be Irish yeah. Its nice being from a county that's not committed genocide or tried to take over the world etc.

& Irish is a nice nationality to be imo :D Good auld Irish ;)

I can kinda see where some of these robots who can't comprehend this pride, are coming from. But its part of who we are like it or not. Oh and I say robots cause their arguments remind me of Data from StarTrek. :p

One thing that annoys me is that I've noticed on Boards its kinda trendy for a lot of people to be against the idea of "irish pride" etc for fear of looking like a member of the frecking IRA or something.

You can be proud to be Irish and not a feckin "Ra' head" btw.. You can also like the idea of a united ireland too.

    Absolute bollocks!!!

Quality is quality no matter where it comes from. I like Barcelona, I like Liverpool because they're good teams. Location doesn't come into it. When I lived in Ireland, my nearest club was Bray Wanderers (45min trip, bus permitting). I went twice, it was ****e on both occasions. Why in the name of all that is holy should I keep going?

Should I start supporting Hertha Berlin simply because they're nearlby?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I agree. It is ridiculous that people are being tarred with the same brush! I have very patriotic friends who are extremely passionate about Ireland yet aren't the 'Ra loving muppets that litter our streets.

I have no interest in History and I suppose that maybe is why I dont feel patriotic but to be honest, if I was born any where I would feel the same indifference. (as long as I wasnt born in Cork!!!!:) JOKING BTW)

Not at all. I was just saying that these muppets when asked "Why do you follow Celtic" say "Cos dey are Irish"

If that is their reasoning, why don’t they support an Irish Club?

I agree completely with you, I actually support England. (the football team)

I like being Irish, and it's nice to come back to Ireland after being abroad. I don't think I would call myself patriotic though. I'm sure I would feel the same belonging to the country no matter where I grew up, as opposed to where I was born.

It is the culture and history I'm proud of. I know it is an accident of birth but you still act Irish rather than French etc...

So yeah I'm proud to be Irish. That is completely different and separate to accepting the crap that goes on in the country that I'm not proud of like most of the politics and the complete idiots in the country although every country has this crap I think, just maybe not on our level.

I meant them as a collective group, i.e. the ones who hold all three close to their hearts. Tehy exist and take away from what is a great country.

Fair enough, I think I may have misinterpreted your post - apologies (have no feelings towards Celtic one way or the other - not really a fan of Scottish football)

My parents nurtured me and housed/clothed and fed me. I grew to love them. No countries ever done anything like that for me and never will. It's a piece of land bound by an imaginary border created by some fool with too much time on his/her hands.

I'd say I'm proud to be human, but hell, look at us as a species... pretty pathetic to say the least.

I'm Irish but my sister is American. If I'm proud to be Irish should I be ashamed of my sister?

Ah if only we had more like ya... But seriously though, this country has done nothing for you? I find that hard to believe...

"I'd say I'm proud to be human, but hell, look at us as a species... pretty pathetic to say the least."

Thats very narrow minded, your only factoring in the bad stuff we've done... What about space travel? I'd say thats worth a lot of the sh!te thats gone on... But thats just my view...
