White Pride!

Anyways, I think the opening email there is a bit rascist tbh. It has undertones of the paranoia which is used by neo-Nazis, skinheads etc as a weak excuse to justify their desire to suppress other races. The WASPs still rule the US, they have nothing to fear, and minorities in the US are justified in being proud of their identity after centuries of being shat on by those of white European descent.

And I also think being offended by terms like whitey, cracker etc is justified. Black dudes are just as capable of being rascist as white. Just look at some of the old Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor comedy.

Anyone who rates their race (along with their God, their president or their country) as more important than things like their morality, philosophy or ideology has serious issues imo.

I know, I think you missed my point. I thought the whole slave thing was self evident and a bit too obvious to mention. I was just pointing out that rascism can work both ways.

I never did figure out why we forgave the Norwegians for all they did to us, but hold a grudge against the British who, in fairness, did bring a few useful things with them.

Trends are thereafter to continue with a fertility rate among Hispanics of 3, among African Americans of 2.2, among Non-Hispanic Whites of 2.0 (replacement level), and others (Asian/Pacific Islanders) of 1.8).

Also of interest- over 2 million with Chinese as their primary language, and just under a million with Russian....... Thankfully the statistics show the under 5s as conquering the English language- which should help better integration in the future.

Hard to believe. I must reexamine what I learned in Ethnic Studies class.

The problem with the term "white" is that it brings up memories of deliverance and good ole boys etc. If the question is - Are you proud to be of European descent? it becomes more acceptable. Are you proud to be of Italian. Scottish descent etc. Even more so ( although Anglo Saxons are bit more demure).

As for the WASPs and America - seems that people are speaking English, which is the language of WASPs ( not "whites"). So maybe the rest are visiting. In any case the Matt Damon character was being baited in that scene.

I agree with Dudess. And also with the 'every day is children's day' comment (I used to get that from my mam as well!) - every day is 'white' day basically! White people in America (and here) have absolutely NO idea what it's like to be an ethnic minority and to be judged for your appearance/skin colour all the time. For goodness sake, I only look a bit foreign (I'm white by anyone's standards - Irish, English and Italian) and I still get racist comments like 'paki bitch' shouted at me in the street and followed around by security guards in shops. I can't even imagine being black. So what if there's BET, Hispanic Pride Day? Do you really think it makes up for being treated like a second class citizen? Having lived in America, it riles me up to see white Americans acting like the country is 'theirs', and complaining about all the Latinos. I have Canadian friends who do it as well, complain about all the Chinese and say it's a shame that 'their' country is being taken over - with absolutely NO sense of irony whatsoever.

Just as with nationality/national identity, I think nobody has ANY reason to be proud of their colour/country. Why be proud of sheer happenstance/luck?I was lucky enough to be born white in Ireland to a good family. Am I proud of that luck? no. Do I understand Gay pride? no.. why be proud of having a sexual orientation - I'm not proud of being straight, I JUST AM.

It's like being proud of liking the colour green - it's a built in preferance.. it's like being proud of having brown hair - it just randomly happened through genetics. You SHOULD be proud of your actions & choices (if you made the right ones in your own mind) - but to be proud of something so stupid is beyond excuse. Pride comes before a fall and all that, eh?

I guess being proud of being white/black/green/whatever is acceptable when you have NOTHING else to be proud of because all you have done throughout your life is make WRONG decisions and can only fall back on your roots for something to be proud of.

Yes. I am fully aware of white slavery. Romans held white ( celtic) slaves. Iceland is descendent os celtic ( female) slaves and nordic slaveholders. Slav is short for slaves ( generally the Ottoman empire). And there was that incident in Baltimore.

Of course Europeans often kept other Europeans as slaves, too. Or tenant farmers. Or serfs.

The only thing that's handy about being white (other than the fact that we don't face racismin a primarly white country) is that tattoo's show up pretty nice.. that's not something I'm proud of though, just handy.

See, I really have a problem with this attitude, I am proud of being Irish and am glad of the accident of birth that has me here, I am proud of our record as a nation in giving overseas aid, I am proud of our record as a nation in peace keeping overseas, I am proud of our record as a nation in sporting achievements. There are things I am not proud of certainly, corrupt politicians to name just one. But I am certainly proud of being Irish and to those who aren't I would like to say get the fcuk off your high horse and do something to make this place a place to be proud of!
