The verification system need not be intrusive or go beyond a one on one. Verification need go no further than a PM to a mod and say no more. Im also not suggesting a complicated system based on agency. Police is police or even merge all together 'Verified Emergency Service member'.

What area falls into this category may be a job for the collective minds of the MODs but I personally dont intend to start questioning that area. I simple want to know a person is who they say they are for the simple reason that ES is a more senstive area than a car forum or many many oher messageboards. Reality is various forms of friendship emerge from this and other sites. That could be costly if it involves a genuine ES and a Walter.

God forbid but imagine Alan was a serious criminal? Thankfully neither myself or Nog opened up enough but we could have and in doing so made slips in regards operational or personal information. Met seriously pulled us out of the firing line there.

Jeez. This is the best bit of entertainment ive seen in a while.

It's not really practical for the ideas of creating private forums for ES members and starting a vetting system etc... After all the ES board is just a little section of the overall site boards.ie, so anyone is kinda free to walk in and say whatever they want. Free speech and all that. Your best protection against these pretenders lies with the more experienced posters and mods. If you see someone spewing false information around then pull them up and sort them out.

The point isnt to purge the site or restrict it. Its to distinguish proven ES personel and people simple saying they are.

I don't think verifying people is the way to go. Any bull****ters become quite obvious after a while and can be sorted. The forum should still be kept as open as it is. I think compiling a list of ES members might be seen as setting up a clique by the other users of the forum. Everybody is welcome once they conform to the rules

I'm saddened you feel that way but I just have not seen it and if I did see I wouldn't condone it all.

I would have to completly disagree with this statement, I am not in any clique and have felt very much accepted by those who really work in the ES on this forum.
I am also personally very open to sharing my private details with the Mods to verify who I am and my real interests here, I can see this as a very good solution in some respects for the Mods to clarify real posters and interested parties etc.

Just my opinion.

I must apologise for writing - drunken - nonsense. What I was trting to say is that civilians like me will never really know what it's like to be a garda or other ES worker. I have garda friends, some of whom I speak to every day, but I don't know what it's like to do what they do. I'll never really know because I'll never be an ES worker. That's what I was trying to say...

That makes a lot more sense. I think the word 'clique' brings up images of a closed group with a superiority issue such as those in every cheap crappy US high school movie.

Alan,

You've got yourself in a spot of bother here. I'm conscious that you are possibly getting a lot of PMs as well as public postings on this topic and that such a degree of ticking off isn't going to be easy to take. So I will try to be measured here.

1. Although you didn't openly pretend to be something you weren't on this forum, you implied a degree of knowledge and professionalism you didn't have. In itself this isn't too bad, but coupled with your antics on other sites, you cannot realistically expect yourself to be taken seriously by any members of this forum again. Ever.

2. The internet is a funny place. We can all pretend to be things we are not to a greater or lesser degree. As someone said already, many have engaged in a degree of make-believe at some point. From what we can gather across www, you have been engaged in a rather greater amount than might be usual. The problem arises when the www and the 'real' world intersect. It is not possible to separate the two indefinitely. I am pretty sure I have met you at gigs you've been working at.

3. You have posted significant amounts of identifying information on a number of websites, although some of these seem to have been deleted recently. With an aspiring career in nursing and/or DFB ahead of you, this sort of carry on is not going to make things easy for you. As a professional who will in the future have responsibility for the care of others, you need to show that you are capable of this. That is what the next few years at college will help you to do.

My advice:

I think that you should put all of this behind you. I don't believe you will get any thanks for continuing to post on this forum. De-register your username. By all means continue to read the posts.

Be careful in the future about posting any identifiable personal information on the www.

There is nothing stopping you from re-registering another username, but use your common sense before doing this.

Enjoy college. Get out and a enjoy a little more of the real world. It may be a bit more mundane but the excitement will come eventually as well. Unfortunately you have to work for this and earn it. In the meantime, be true to yourself and don't try to be something you're not.

Good luck!

As an aside/ did anyone else have the 'Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)' tune going on while reading it though?

+1.

That would be the one part of the post I'd actaully disagree with at the moment, should have said so.

I'm not claiming to know a fraction of what went on so in some respects maybe I should butt-out but I don't see how starting up a new account and disregarding another going to help anyone move on?

Also, the posters don't get to decide who posts on the forum and who doesn't; that's up to the Admins and also the mods in some respect. There's always the ignore feature.

I've had a rethink.

My last post was too harsh. Alan, you cocked up, and p1ssed off some people like TheNog and Karlito who were your pals on here. You'll have to make amends with them yourself if they're amenable to that.

As regards the forum here, I think fair play for holding your hands up. It took character to do that and I was unfair in my earlier post. You made a mistake, learn from it and move on. If you want to carry on posting on here I don't have a problem with it, provided you use this as a learning experience and focus on learning from this place and the people on here instead of trying to convince people you're something you're not. There's nothing stopping you from going on to the Guards or DFB or A&E if you put the effort in and focus on where you want to be and how you are going to get there.

I apologise for being harsh and hope you take on board what I've said.

He's a 17/18 year old. He's a kid. Kids do stupid things. The complexity and duration of the persona he built up on the other forum suggests there are some issues. Public humiliation may or may not have been the best way of dealing with it. He's going to have a tough enough time building a career in the ES, as I'd imagine it's relatively small world and people talk.

I don't know if this thread is going to achieve much more.. perhaps time to follow dredre's quality advice here too and close it.

Apology accecpted, once again that shows your true colours that you did apologise

I did cock up, i admit that, i apologised also.

Water under the bridge we can move on an learn, all of us can.

Now i think this thread should be left open for a day or two to get opinios from the rest, then lock it and get back to normaility around here. That ok with everyone?

Yes i too reconise i did have some issues, but im working on them and getting help for them.

My life has moved on, university, more active social life, realationship the whole sha-bang.

As for making things difficult for myself as i said i made my bed and shall sleep in it, i wont hide behind anything or use certain factors as an excuse, i belive (as you know verb) it takes a bigger man to pull themselfs up, dust themselfs off and get going.

Hi Alan,

Firstly, I do think its important that you have accepted that you cocked up, I think the learning in relation to this is for you, the learning for those who you broke trust with is very different however and possible to suggest that its water under the bridge and "all of us can" move on might not be so simple for some.

I think its very admirable that the likes of Metman can forgive but I do think that possibly the advice given about moving on away from this forum might be a wise move. I say this not to hurt you at all and only out of concern, the wider a gap you can give yourself away from this situation the better it will be for you in the long run. There is a very realy factor in the human spirit that has to be considered and that is people may forget what was actually said, the words used but they never forget how you made them feel, the more you stay here the longer it will be for the issues to be forgotten.

Alan, this is only my personal opinion, I am open to being wrong and I say it for nothing more than to try and help you in someway. I do think (this is the Psychologist in me) that there are a number of issues going on in your life, I also find it hard to believe that these are being addressed so quickly, I am not calling you a liar but I think you may be holding your hands up a bit to easily and saying what you think people want to hear. (only you can really answer this) Some will want to give out to me for saying this but I say this to appropriately challenge you to look at yourself first. I suggest that this is something that you should deal with before considering discussing issues here or in any other forum.

I am as previously stated willing to help you in anyway I can, you can, as you know PM me at anytime, I also live close to you and will offer assistance in relation to help if you want.

Wishing you well in your decisions.

Sorry you feel that way esel, I was only telling it how it was, I had deleted the same comment my from my post. If I'm correct people have been banned for far less than this kind of behaviour, which is troubling to say the least and a worry to all of us in which ever part of the forum we frequent.

Fyr Ftr F#@ed up big time.
He was found out, named and shamed.
His actions could have had serious consequences for a gullible person on the other forums.

He claims to be getting help for his issues and I wish him the best, but it will be a long process. A few contrite posts are a long way from seeking real professional help though - and not on the internet either. I do think he has shown courage by replying to posts and pm's. I'd have run a mile (well, about 200 yards and then waited for the car to come and pick me up).

For such a prolific poster I would assume the www is his main social outlet, so he's shot himself in the foot there (probably with a clearmagsmgsig24.5867mmcflurry;))

We've all done things we 'll cringe about for the rest of our lives (yes, I had a pair of stone washed jeans and boot runners - the first time they were fashionable, emo's me hole).

I agree that if you continue posting here, you will, at best, end up on a lot of ignore lists or suffer continual abuse. I would suggest you take a break from E.S. too(we still have to slag you for a wee while but I feel guilty while you're stll here!) but let us know how your doing.
