np, the system works like this, the long haul carrier dictates the weight. so you need to ask or check virgin weight..
In my case it was 2 bags no heavier than 50lb each total 100lb.. aer fungus then allow you the same as its a 2 leg trip.. they check it in and check it straight through.. you simple arrive in heathrow and head to your next flight..

I must say virgin were a dream to travel with..

So no need for online booking, just arrive at aer lingus check-in? and aer lingus dont charge you for checking a bag on? how about virgin, do they have similar charges or is it included in the price? I dont plan on having much weight in the luggage going over, coming back might be a different story;)

I travelled with virgin a few years ago to Newark, I thought they were excellent and I always find flying on a 747 much more comfortable.

the baggage for Virgin is included as stated in my previous post, 2 bags 50lb each.. aer fungus must comply with your long haul company so all is good !

No additional charges for baggage..

Well to be honest I just think they are one of the worst airlines I have had the misfortune to fly with. Grand if things go ok, totally stupid if things go wrong, and I always judge a company based on how they deal with problems !

Thanks Sunny, but I'm actually wondering about the process on checking the bags in.I mean, do I just arrive at the Aer Lingus desk the morning of the flights or do I have to do an on-line booking with either of the airlines? I would'nt even mind paying for the bags if it was needed, after saving €1300 on the flights I'd have to have a hard neck to complain! I hate suprises on the first morning of a holiday!!

Couple years back I booked flights to LA this way, booked in online through BA website....The girl at desk was surprised I had my tickets printed out....Didnt matter by the looks of her....I think you can atleast choose your seats with BA.....Aerlingus took bags and they were fowarded on automatically when we arrived in Gatwick to plane to LA

I actually have my e-ticket, and I was able to choose the seats when booking,so I'd imagine I dont really have to do any more with virgin. I would like to know if I just turn up at the Aer Lingus desk the morning of the flights and give them my e-ticket - or if I do it this way am I going to have to go through a mini-drama because bags were'nt checked in on-line with Aer Lingus?

^^ Yeah I kinda know what you mean now. When I went that was before you had to book bags in online at a cheaper rate or something. But I think you will be fine because its transatlantic flight.

well if your flying to london from dublin I'd say u'll be doing the visa stuff when u get to jfk cuz I don't think they have one in London. U only do the emigration thing in dublin if you were flying out to the US from dublin

You only go through immigration in Ireland when flying directly from Ireland to USA. If you route through London (or anywhere else), then you go through immigration when you land in the USA

And that is not on all flights either...

In fact the only rule seems to be don't expect to clear immigration in Dublin, but you might be lucky to do so!

Actually does anyone know how to find out if your flight will clear immigration in Dublin or not? For example, does all Aer Lingus flights clear here, but perhaps some Continental flights don't? Any clues?

Just to add some info re dealings with cheaptickets.

I had a flight booked from Dublin via Gatwick to Atlanta (aer Lingus then BA). BA changed my flight to be from Heathrow to Atlanta rather than Gatwick which created a problem with connections. I contacted Aer Lingus and BA because based on web reviews I didn't want to deal with Cheaptickets directly. BA accepted the change wasn't plausible but still insisted on talking to cheaptickets. With dread I rang cheaptickets but was very pleasantly surprised at the response. While I was on hold for a long time after I spoke to the first person this was because that person was trying to contact BA while I was on hold. Eventually they came back to me and took my contact details and said they'd contact once they had found out what was going on. In fairness they called me back promptly with a list of alternative options which they would negotiate for changing the flights to something more suitable. They took that and contacted aer lingus who eventually agreed to change my flights to Dublin to Heathrow at no cost and Cheaptickets then sent me an email with the updated flight options.

In fairness the customer service was very good. Also, my flights were reconfirmed as being 100% okay so there's definitely no worry about any problems popping up later about the low fare.

I have spoke with them on the phone also and found them very very helpful so I can't see why they are getting bad reviews all over the net.

Booked my tickets to San Fran and Los Angeles with them via Heathrow (BA) and had no issues at all at all. In fact, going through terminal 5 made it all the better (its a **** cool place, even has a Wagamama!!).

The only airline I'm aware of that doesn't use the pre-clearance facility in Dublin is American Airlines. That's due to issues with long lines for immigration resulting in delays talking off.

just came on to say that im just back this minute from a trip booked through cheaptickets. straight into work

because of a stupid emergency but i stopped by to say no prblems at all. i thought they might be dodgy because of the cheap price but not at all.

i just spotted this thread this morning. i am looking to go to NY for about a week around paddys day next year. flights on air lingus yesterday were 405 euro and with delta 407 - pretty good, but decided to check cheaptickets for the craic. they were way more expensive?!

would you get them much cheaper than the 400 euro mark at any time?? i could hang on with booking, but kind of want to get it done now!

I think the trick is to check cheaptickets when an airline has a sale. I was looking for a while and not finding anything cheaper on cheaptickets until an aer Lingus sale came along and the price tumbled.

When you find return tickets to NYC for 192 euros on Expedia let me know! That is the price that I got on cheaptickets for travel next February. If you get it at the right time it is by far the cheapest website for flights.

Booked for less than 200 euro (All in) Cork - LAX on 3 different dates...Nov 08, Jan 09 and June 09.
