POP QUIZ: Are all of you doing the BA? And are you just coming from the leaving cert? And do you have any experience already? (don't be afraid if you don't, you're only starting off)

I'm entering the course as a mature student (in my case, read: my leaving cert points were a lot lower than yours :o) just after completing the journalism HND at BCFE.

I know exactly what you mean, I could never see my self reviewing music or film full time. But, then again, I don't like writing reviews of any kind much.

I really have had the minimum of experience, was asked to write for RTE.ie during the General Election and write for a very amateurish magazine as a columist.
Cool a mature student,,is there many mature students in our course?Just because you're mature, doesn't mean you cant socialise with us teenagers ..:D

Ah bitta nerves never hurt any one....everyone will be a bit nervous but most of us are all in the same boat - not knowing many people or knowing anyone at all.... All part of the experience these days :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Paddy-Megans-Lo

:L:L Uniforms have their plus sides! So orientation ball is silver screen themed....freshers ball is superhero...and first night out is cowboy themed..

Nobody should worry about not having experience when starting off. In the case of the BA you have three years to build up a bit of a portfolio.
Many magazines/papers aren't very motivated to publish articles from outsiders so its hard to find experience :(

Freelancing can be and is normally hard at the start. More so until you build up relationships with editors. Keep trying, but expect to get not only rejected, but get silent rejections.

You could compare it (really loosely) to trying to chat somebody up in a busy, noisy nightclub while the target person is out with a bunch of friends and a few strangers are already trying to chat them up as well.

(Err... I'm guessing I'm going to get strange looks next time I meet any editor)

Here's a few links from boards.ie and elsewhere about freelancing...

    http://www.adammaguire.com/blog/2008/05/26/having-patience-when-pitching/
    http://www.londonfreelance.org/

And there's no need to feel like everybody needs to dive in right now. Wait till you get settled in the course and take advice of lectures who have worked in the trade etc.

I don't know, but I'm guessing I'll be in the minority.

Haha nice simile there!! Very very true, same can be said when applying for jobs. Not even a basic human response is given...

Thanks for the links! Really helpful!
Yeah the whole gaining experience thing isn't really about me trying to get ahead in the course... Just something I want to to do for myself, you know? :)

Il be sending out an email in any case. There will be something in there for everyone and if you have any ideas or anything at all just give me a shout on thecollegevieweditor@gmail.com.
Cant wait to see you all for a pint over the coming week! You'll have a blast.
    Take care
    Stan
