Don't know if this is the right forum for this question but anyways......

Thinking of going to America (NYC) for like 5-7 days early January or late December this year. I'm 20 and currently a student. Do I need like a visa for that length of stay. Basically my question is, what exactly do I need to be able to go there legally for that amount of time period?

If you have an Irish passport, you won't need a visa. You can stay as a tourist for 90 days.

Fill in the green I-94 form, the white customs form for when you land in the US and have your passport ready at immigration (if going direct, it will be in Dublin unless a stopover is required in Shannon, if a stopover in London or elsewhere, immigration will be stateside). Don't be smart at the immigration booths, just speak when spoken too and you'll be good to go.

Please note that if you have any criminal convictions you also need to apply for a visa...

Something that a good few people don't realise:)

Regarding credit cards in the US do they now use the chip and pin system?

They didn't when I was there in Jan anyway.

Ireland's part of the Visa Waiver Programme. If you're travelling with an Irish passport you don't need a visa for visits to the US of up to 90 days at a time. Unless you're going there to work, study or unless you give a 'wrong' answer to one of the questions on the travel authorization questionnaire which it's necessary to complete before you arrive in the US.

You can now apply online for travel authorization using ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) and all applications will have to be made online from January 12th, 2009.

You'd be well advised to complete the travel authorization form online several weeks before you plan to travel just in case some problems crop up.

There's all the information you need on this website:

So were they just using the signature method?

Does anybody know what the charges are to use your cirrus (ATM) card in NY?

    Hi
I was wondering has anyone ever flown Delta to NYC and if so do they use Aer Lingus? The reason I ask is we normally go with Continental, however, I tried Delta for a change and it was €100 cheaper per ticket than Aer Lingus and Continental, but someone told me they use the Aer Lingus planes.
    Any info would be appreciated...:

No, Delta run their own service to NY. It is not an Aerlingus plane. Why does it matter if they use Aerlingus planes as all three offer the same service over. Neither of them are better than each other, although if I remember correctly Delta use 757 for their NY run, so only 1 aisle down the middle which is a little more cramped than the 2-4-2 config Aerlingus use.

Delta are very good, used them this year and would be my first port of call when checking flights to the States.

I agree, found Delta very good. They use a Delta plane.I would only use Continental or Delta as there prices are much more competitive than Aer Lingus. Also I'm sure I will be corrected if I am wrong but I think the American carriers have a slightly better baggage allowance.

Thats great thanks for the replies, I would generally only fly with Continental but as I said huge difference in the price with Delta.

Don't know about Delta, but Continental's baggage allowance is less than that of Aer Lingus. Continental and Delta used to have cheaper flights, but any time I've been looking recently Aer Lingus came up cheapest. Best thing is to check all three before you book.

    Not true.
Aer Lingus allowance to the US is 36kg and 6 kg for cabin baggage
    Continental is 46kg (2 bags @ 23kg) and 18kg for handbaggage

i booked flights for last month and november(dub-nyc) and continental and delta were always cheaper than aer lingus. their base fare seems cheap but factor in the taxes and the ridiculous fuel surcharge and they always in my case anyway come out more expensive.

continental always get my vote, newark is dead handy for getting into manhattan and their 757s have seat back tv's. deltas terminal at jfk(T3 i think) is a disaster imo.

It depends on the bank who're running the atm, i came across $1.50 to $3 withdrawing $200-$300
And yes credit cards are still just 'signature' based. You might... need photo ID with the CC.

Sorry you're right. Last time when we travelled with Continental our bags (1 each) were over 50 lbs so we had to carry on some of our stuff or else pay excess, but I see on thier site that they allow 2 bags per person at 50 lbs each.

Thinking of going to New York around Christmas and Continental are coming up almost €100 cheaper than AerLingus and about €400 cheaper than Delta!! THe only thing I'm not sure about is if the fuel charge is included. I tried to go through with the booking but I'd have to enter my CC number and press purchase before there's any mention of it. I know that they can't allow me fully purchase without telling me if there is an extra charge but I'm afraid that it's not there and when I press purchase I will actually purchase the flight and I'm not sure yet if I'm going!!!

Hope I didn't make too much of a mess trying to explain that but can anyone help?!

continental definitely don't charge a fuel surcharge and to the best of my knowledge delta don't either. i booked a flight with continental for november. the airfare was €364 and the taxes on it were €56. the charges were like this:

    Fare Breakdown
    Airfare: 364.00EUR
    U.S. Federal Transportation Tax: 21.78
    U.S. APHIS User Fee: 3.54
    U.S. Passenger Facility Charge: 3.19
    U.S. Security Service Fee: 1.77
    U.S. Immigration User Fee: 4.95
    U.S. Customs User Fee: 3.89
    Ireland Airport Security Charge: 3.90
    Ireland Passenger Service Charge: 11.50
    Ireland Pre-inspection Charge: 1.51
    Per Person Total: 420.03 EUR

My neighbour has her mother and step dad from the states staying at the moment.

Unfortunately he has injured his leg and they are looking to fly him home with a carrier that has "flat bed" seats.

Are there any flights from Ireland (any airport) to New York that have these facilities or will they have to connect with a flight in the UK?

    Thanks in advance

    D-M.

Flat beds are in the first class cabin of certain airlines. Continental/Aer Lingus and Delta fly direct to NYC and none of them have flat beds. Virgin , British Airways and American do but they would have to fly from the UK.

Any stay in the Ramada New Yorker recently? I'd like a few reviews from people on here if possible. I'm always skeptical about the some of the ones on other sites.

You won't usually get flatbed seats on flights from Ireland/UK to the US as they mostly leave in the morning/afternoon in Europe and arrive in the states around the same time with the time difference. Generally they are not overnight flights going west so no sleeping facilities are needed... (Coming back from the states they are generally overnight flights though).

However, first class on Aer Lingus has lots of leg-room for someone with an injured leg. You could check with them on seat pitch and leg support before booking.
