That would be 34 Canal St. Chinatown. Usual caveats apply.

Thanks for that KCB, and what is the plane itself like ? Is it a fairly comfy flight or are you all packed in like sardines with nothing to do for 7 hours ...?

    Bish

To be honest the plane was only ok.

Not too much room but typical I'd imagine.

What I remember is that the lots of the consoles didn't work.

Also the food was awful for a transatlantic flight.

But it was over €100 cheaper so didn;t bother me!!

Hello Everyone. just a quick tip for anyone wanting a cheap hotel in New york. Try the Holland Motor Lodge in New Jersey. its literally right across the water from manhattan. One stop on the Path train which cost $1.25. Basic accomodation but rooms have a microwave if ya want to keep costs down. Free Parking too. Rooms are only about 80dollars a night. Excellent reviews on tripadvisor.
I stayed in hotels in Manhattan of a similar quality that are double the price so if you dont mind the quick hop and skip on the train than this is a great place for anyone on a budget.

This post may be in the wrong place, so sorry in advance!

Im in New York City at the moment on holiday, and Im looking for good but cheap tool stores to visit in the area.

Its for my boyfriend, he's a carpenter, and looking for power tools in particular. He's also looking for somewhere he can buy a nail gun. He's looking for a store with alot of variety, like a McQuillian's tool store at home (Ireland).

Also, if anyone has any comments about bringing the tools home. ie: customs, duty, shipping them home rather than putting them in the suitcase? Is it advised to put them in the suitcase? Or are we going to run into problems at the airport. OBVIOUSLY WE WONT HAVE THEM IN OUR HAND LUGGAGE!!!
Or would we just be better buying them online and having them shipped over?

All relevant comments and advice appreciated, thanks!!

Just beware that all electrical items in the states are 110v. Your BF will be using 110v anyway though if he works on building sites.

Yeah thanks but the 110 is fine for him. But in case there is anyone else wondering we found a good place in New Jersey called A.W Meyer Hardware! Cant remember the full address but you can get it if you google it.

It is brilliant. We didnt use it because we're not planning on doing too much sightseeing here, just statue of lib, empire state, central park. This has been a 2- month road trip and now is shopping time!! But it seems excellent value alright.

To be honest, if what you mean is a good tour bus around the city, I really wouldnt bother with one. They are extremely expensive for a tour as far as I remember, like about 40 dollars per person. If you just read a little bit about the city first and think about what you want to do and see, then just grab a day pass for the subway ($7.50) and make your own way around. The only thing about this is it will take you alot longer than a bus tour, so if time is an issue maybe do go with the tour.

    HI,

Myself and my wife are travelling to New York for christmas. We were wondering if anyone has had christmas dinner there before and could maybe recommend somewhere. We would like a traditional style Christmas dinner.

    Thanks

    Thanks!

This reply is a little late.

But I've been to NYC with my kids twice and was never refused entry into a bar.

Mostly you'll be told they've to be seated at a table and no at the bar.

the rule in NYC is no U21s at the bar. no problem sitting down in the bar though.

hey im heading to new york end of nov can anyone recomend a hotel cheap and cheerfull staying fo 3 nights for 3 people?? they all seem to be really expensive!!! looking at spending $600 max for 3 nights am i kidding myself!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭robo

Elainee - I am looking to go in October maybe and there are 3 of us also. But I am looking towards renting an apartment as it seems to be the best solution - one bedroom and a living room - this means that some people in the group can sleep and others can stay awake if they want. 3 people in one hotel room is very crowded and that is why I am thinking of an apartment.
The website I have been browsing is http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/vac/
Has anyone else used this to rent an apartment in New York?

I was there for Thanksgiving a couple of years ago and we just ate in our hotel. They had a buffet with Turkey (and I think ham) and all the trimmings. I don't have any recommendations for a particular restaurant, but most will be serving traditional dinners so you'll have plenty of choice.

I doubt you'll find a hotel for $200 for 3 people. I booked a junior suite at the Wolcott Hotel for my parents and my brother. It sleeps three and cost around $300 per night which is cheap by New York standards. They're not going till Christmas so I can't say what it's like, but ir has good reviews on Tripadvisor and the location is central.

I stayed in the Wolcott Hotel last December for 4 nights. Its a grand hotel.

Rooms were quite small, it was a double bed room. The radiators were a bit noisy, would sometimes start hissing in the middle of the night but nothing loud enough to keep you awake.

And if your going to NY your not going to be spending any time in your room bar sleeping there so you dont need anymore than somewhere to leave ur bags and sleep. For that its a perfect hotel if you ask me, and your saving money by not forking out for something more expensive. Great location aswell.

Id defo go back there if i was going again.

    Hi,

I am heading to New York in December for four days. Having never been before I'm not sure how much anything is(food, drink, clothes etc) and was wondering if anyone could give me a rough guide to the amount of money I will need to bring.

    Thanks

It really depends on what you want to spend. Things can be as cheap or as expensive as you want them to be. But seeing as that was not the answer that you were probably looking for I'll give a rough example of prices:
Small bottle of water from shop or street vendor: $1-1.50.
    Large BigMac Meal: $6.50
Meal in Hard Rock Cafe(just main course and drink): $25
    Tommy Hilfiger jeans(men's): $40
    Ralph Lauren Polo Tops: $40

As I said, it really depends on what you are looking for. However, great value can be had and in general things are much cheaper, especially clothes, than they are in Ireland.

How much money you should bring? Well that really depends on where you plan to go and how much you plan to buy while shopping. Excluding the shopping, I would say that $70 per day would cover food and drink, presuming you are not planning on doing anything outrageous.

Is there a place in Jersey gardens or woodbury commons that sells vans shoes?

If you've an eye on shoppng in NY try visit some of the big New York and US stores websites to get a better idea of the prices.

There are tons of guides to shopping in New York online if you're unsure of the shops. Macys is the biggest department store. Bloomingdales is a bit more upmarket. My missus adores Old navy for inexpensive "everyday" clothes.

Likewise you can find out the prices of any of the sites (etc) that you want to visit or activities you want to do online. For food, you can have as cheap as you want (street vendors are evrywhere) or pay some of the highest prices in the world. Again, I'd be a middle of the road guy and somewhere like TGI Fridays serves my needs in most cases (and it would be cheaper than Dublin prices). There are endless possibilities though and you'll easily find somewhere for your budget and taste

check the websites for store directories:

    Woodbury Commons: http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=7

    Jersey Gardens: www.jerseygardens.com

I was in both, and Woodbury Commons is definately full of more up-market stores, DKNY, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Jimmy Choo... so Jersey Gardens would be your better option to be honest. Stores like Guess, Saks, Reebok...
Unfortunately I wasnt looking for Vans or anything like them, but I would imagine you would have a better chance finding them in Jersey Gardens. That said, I found the bargains far better in Woodbury so by all means try there too. There are a few other Outlets too, Theres another in NJ, in Secaucus, its a amall store, with alot of surrounding stores in the area. Because of its set-up I wasnt interested much (I was tired that day) but I did visit the mall, which was fairly small, but they had a cheap perfume store. It may be worth a look. Another one in NY is the Waterloo Outlet. I never went there so I dont know what its like. Also an Outlet in Long Island called Tanger Outlets. Its two outdoor outlet malls, Tanger 1 and Tanger 2. Pretty Good, a good mix of the very upmarket and the not-so upmarket. If you check online you will get all the store directories.

I know there are shuttles that run to Jersy Gardens and Woodbury Commons, but I dont know about the others. We were driving.

    Hope this helps.

Ok well firstly booked flights for New York for 2 people fm 26th to 31st December 08, but now finding it impossible to get a hotel for less than €250 a night, never realised accomodation would be so expensive so looks like hotels are out for us..So looking for you boardies to recommend a hostel, really just looking for somewhere to lay our heads at night but somewhere CLEAN,SAFE,GOOD LOCATION ie close to tourist sights and nightlife and affordable, we're not going to NYC for shopping, going to see the place and go out a few nights, 2 females early 30's.. Can anyone help us out and recommend an affordable (about 100 euro per night per room) hostel/guesthouse that tick all the aforementioned boxes? Please Please Please, otherwise I think we might not be able to go :-(

    Hi there,

Just literally off the plane yesterday from a 2 month road trip in USA, NYC was our last port of call.

From what I heard of accommodation in NY even the more expensive places for 250 are quite basic, some dont even have bathrooms in the rooms, but a common bathroom on each floor!! So you would be better off with a hostel!! Now, we stayed with hostelling international in San Fransisco, and they were great. They do have a location in NY, but I cant remember the address. From what I remember its fairly central though. You should google it. The price was 40dollars a night per person.

Also if you google 'hostels NYC' im sure you will find quite alot too.

We stayed in New Jersey, cheaper, nice and quiet, can be a break form the hussle and bustle!! Its easy to get from NJ to NY during the day, a little more difficult after midnight, due to infrequency of busses, subways. And even though its not far away, sometimes it just felt like too much hassle to go to NYC. A taxi to the GW bridge, a bus to subway, subway to Times Sq. We were lucky because we had a car, may not be too nice to be stuck in NJ knowing you have a 40 min trip ahead of you to NY.

New York is generally expensive at all times. Looking for a hotel over the Xmas holiadys is *always* going to be expensive unless you're willing to move out of Manhatten) (€240 was the cheapest I could find - Stanford Hotel.

Of course you can always use a website where you get a price and location but not the name of the hotel (not until you pay) www.Hotwire.com offers a $189 for a 2-star in Midtown, $232 for a 2-star by Central Park, etc...

For hostels, http://www.hostelworld.com/ is a great site. It allows you to find private rooms in hostels so you're not in a dorm with others.

i was there last yr from 7th - 13th of Dec.
We stayed in the Park south Hotel for 900 dollars for 5 nights. It was on 28th Street so it wasnt too far a walk to the empire state and macy;s etc..It was a lovely hotel , complementary breakfast, clean spacious room.
i am heading over again in Oct. Staying in the Hotel Stanford. Looks lovely, very central, and the price isnt too bad either.

    Hi,

5 of us are heading to NY on Oct 12 for 6 nights. Can anyone recommend cheap apartments or hotels?

Ideally, we need 1 double bedroom, and 3 other single beds.

We had a couple of apartments offered from lodgis.com but they've been suddenly returned as unavailable.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Ross

When I was tere last July I stayed in the Hotel Newton and the Hotel Americana.

Both were good and central and comfy too.
