A friend of mine in the states works in a government centre to help Vietnam Vets get medical aid.

She said the vast majority of them suffer from flashbacks and post-traumatic stress syndrome and wouldn't have had anything like the near experience that McCain had.

Do you really want someone who suffers from flashbacks to be in charge of the Big Red Button?

With the people saying they have a high pain threshold and all I have a feeling they don't realise that kind of pain these guys would inflict on you ! its not like a simple smack on the fingers with a hammer, or a few needles into the body here and there ! It'd be extreme mental and physical pain, stuff you probably couldn't even imagine ! If you could sit through that and not tell then fair play, I know for sure i'd be giving fake names any chance I got :pac:

America Invaded Vietnam, they were the agressors, McCain was an enemy soldier of a force of ocupation, will they ask him how many villages he Bombed/Napalmed or how many innocent Vietnamese civilians he murdered before he was shot down?

Yeah, that's why I can't help but feel McCain is exaggerating ever so slightly. I don't doubt he was treated horribly, but what tallaght01 described in the opening post, and the extremely long period of time over which it took place? Surely that would either kill a person or break them down to the point where they'd happily spill? Or maybe there are a few people out there who are hard enough to endure that level of suffering and over such a lengthy period...

Fellow POWs that were in the Hanoi Hilton have already backed up his story, including POWs that were there for an even longer period of time than McCain.

Some people are just made of stern stuff and can handle all that's thrown at them. Plus, since they were at war with the people torturing them.... It may have just been a pride thing.

Then again, I was never in such a situation so who knows?

I think, in fairness, he did eventually give them some info. He talks about when they eventually "broke" him.

What amazes me is how there are some people that are so affronted by the idea of complimenting the guy on his cajones. Such is their fear of being labelled "Right-wing", they have to ramble on about the rights and wrongs of the vietnam war, or how the guy is a republican.

So, what? He survived 5 and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton. Full respect to the guy for getting through it, regardless of his politics.

I previously said I'd break early. But, after managing to endure reading the entire abortion thread in humanities, I can safely say I've endured worse torture than the vitnamese could ever dole out. I've looked terminal boredom in the eye, and I've come out the other side
