I'm just sitting here in front of CNN, watching coverage of the US republican convention.

There's a bloke talking about John McCain, and his time as a prisoner of war in Nam.

The Charlie basically captured him after his plane was shot down. He had 2 broken arms and a broken leg when he hit the ground. He got the gee kicked off him for several days and was interrogated and tortured while he slipped in and out of consciousness.

He dropped to 100lbs in weight, and had his arm reset in the wrong place without anaesthetic!

For ages he couldn't even feed himself and was pretty immobile, so just had to lie in his own waste all day.

The batings he got where unbelievable to hear about...especially when he was in solitary confinement for 2 years, and had dysentry!!!!

Then he was offered early release, but he declined, unless the other guys who were put in there before him where released too. The Vietnamese told him to fook off. So, he took another 3 years in the camp, rather than get out early (He was offered early release coz his old man was an important admiral).

After his refusal, the beatings became unbearable, some days they happened every 2 hours!!!

So, when they finally "broke" him and made him give them the names of some group of US soldiers that they wanted....he wrote a whole load of names down for them. The Vietnamese were delighted.....but he'd just written down the names of the green bay packers offensive line!!!

What a legend. It almost made me want to vote Republican. 5 and a half years in a torture camp, and he still didn't break. That's Jack Bauer stuff.

So, what if you were a POW?

Would you talk? Could you hold out for over 5 years?

I know I'd defo hold out. For at least 12 minutes. But I'm tough as fook.

What about the rest of you? Do you think you could ever do anything like that? Or would the sight of an angry chink hanging his cigarette over your balls make you spill your guts about your parents whereabouts there and then?

eh why didn't he just give fake names at the very start of his capture?? I mean wouldnt that kind of imply as a republican he was a bit of an idiot for waiting 5 years to write down fake names when he could of just done that at the start

Obama would have talked, I reckon.

He'd have politely informed them of their obligations under the geneva convention, but he'd have talked nonetheless :P

I was going to read your post, honest I was. But then I saw "john mcCain", and quickly feared. "FÜCK ....POLITICS", and i lost all interest. the purpose of this post then sir.

    TROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL

but then i realised, sh1te, ill rob get a slap of the ban stick. then actually read your post.

and i can whole hartidly say, I would like to believe i wouldnt talk. I value my loved ones lives more than my own tbh. I have a pretty high threshhold for pain and boredom. but I could very well be surprised.

What McCain did as a POW is very impressive. I don't think one can honestly say what they would do unless you were in that situation.

I went to a Christian Brothers school. Playing football in the yard one day and one of us whacked the ball off "Scanno" the headmaster by accident. Of course, "accident" isnt in the Christian Brother dictionary.

He lined us all up asking us who kicked the ball. It only took 3 seconds for me to break. "Heffo did it sir"

He didnt even need to threaten force.

Therefore those foreign millitants wouldnt need to beat me, id be like the speaking clock

I vaguely remmeber some mad scene from a chuck norris movie, where he was captured. His captors put a bag over his head with a mad rat in it. BUt he bit through the rat and killed it.

Or did I make that up?

That was one of the Missing In Action films. The first one, I think.

With regards the OP's question, not only would I talk, I'd volounteer information they didn't ask for. After that I'd offer my services as a spy for them. It'll make things easier on everyone in the long run if you just help them out from the start.

I absolutely hate bullys and bullying authority types. I had a teacher(a priest) in school who back in the days of corporal punishment gave me a caning on the hands as a way of making me give the names of two other kids he suspected of something. Something I wasn't even involved in. He got to around 25 whacks, but the more he hit me the more I swore I wouldn't tell the prick anything. I couldn't close my hands for hours afterward. I was around ten AFAIR. I got home and the oul fella saw the state of me and went in the next day and gave the sadistic cnut a bollocking in front of other staff and pupils. I have the dubious distinction of being thrown out of the scouts for similar. Got suspended once for not ratting someone out too. Let the jumped up cretins do their own dirty work I say. If they're dumb enough to be bamboozled by kids, they're too dumb to be helped by me.

A stubborn streak in me I guess. May explain why I've only held down a "proper job" as an employee for a week. My boss decided his ignorance and lack of ability was an excuse to push people around. Cue one very loud bollocking from me about his general idiocy and I got the sack. :D Turns out they went bust a year or two later. The more they push the more I'll push back. I would say that it's often more bloody minded stubbornness than bravery in cases like this.

Though bravery is there of course. Serious bravery in the case of the McCain fella. I think he and his policies are hogwash but I would give him kudos for that. TBH Obama is as bad. Dumbed down rhetoric about dreams and passing on the dream and living the dream and dreaming the dream and well.... guff basically. Guff for an audience addled by bad media and worse education.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'd be sceptical about that story, I'd be very surprised if it isn't laced with a good big spoonful of exaggeration.

George W made some rather dubious claims about his role in the military too if I remember correctly.

rights or wrongs of a war dont matter when someone is out of the fight as a prisoner. You are scum.

The VC skinned people alive - you condone this type of thing? To torture captives who cant get away? Brave you are

A friend of mine in the states works in a government centre to help Vietnam Vets get medical aid.

She said the vast majority of them suffer from flashbacks and post-traumatic stress syndrome and wouldn't have had anything like the near experience that McCain had.

Do you really want someone who suffers from flashbacks to be in charge of the Big Red Button?

    Dr.Strangelove comes to mind.

You just need to think about the "Manchurian Candidate", when you decide whether or not you're going to talk. The Vietnamese government might end up running the world if McCain gets elected. The only upside would be that we'd all get free counterfeit dvds, fags and designer clothes.

Hmm, I see an ominous pattern emerging here. Gary Glitter's probably been reprogrammed to seize control of Britain and turn it into a paedo's paradise. I, for one, welcome etc.
