I am sooo tired. Thank god I have today off work. This was my 4th year at EP and while the line up was the weakest yet I still had a ball as there was so much to do

Highlights for me were The Gossip, CSS, Underworld, Goldfrapp, Maeve Higgins (who was fantastic), Franz Ferdinand, the dance off on Sat night on the dance floor in Pussy Parlore

Body and Soul was great and the pop baby tent was good in parts but the highlight of the whole festival for me was Arcadia (The huge futuristic outdoor place near PopBaby that had loads of flames outside it) cos the music there was just deadly. Dancing there on Sunday night beside a huge open fire was just brilliant. I danced my feet off me

    Couple of lowlights though:

The bar shutting at 9.45 on Friday night. Absolutely rediculous.

Andrew Maxwell . I was really looking forward to seeing him on stage but he was absolutely crap.

The security was so hit and miss. One person would let you through with no problems then another one would search you as if you were coming through airport security. I still dont understand why cans are not allowed into the main area considering that plastic bottles full of drink where.

The traffic yesterday morning was a ****ing disaster. We left the camp site at 10 and got to our car (camp site A)at 10.30. We drove about 10 feet and then got stuck in a q. We were in the same spot for 2 hours. I took a walk down to the exit (passed about 200 cars) and there was a guard holding up all the cars that were coming out of the carp park in our q whilst letting all the camper vans go by. Got back to my car where a couple of guys decided to chance their arm by driving through an adjacent field (that wasnt been used as a car park). They got through and in the distance we saw that they got onto a road so then 2 other cars tried it. Then a farmer came up on a quad and told us that we could use the field as long as we kept on the track that the other cars had used so that was a god send and it meant that we finally got out of the car park.

Wilco, Sigur Ros, Hadokuen! Jape were my highlights, prob in that order. I saw less music than any other year but prob had a better time.

    Foibles included:
    Not enough toilets. Seriously
Showers. Only one set of showers for all the camp sites?
I thought the line up order could have been adjusted a bit better.

    Highlights:
The Orb on Sunday night in the lashing rain. Absolutely blew me away.

Laughing at people sliding down the bank in body and soul area during the orb. Hilarious.

The comfy crapper and being camped pretty close to it. Made a huge difference to my weekend. Its sad that they arent making much money and wont be back next year :(

Thisispopbaby, lost vagueness, arcadia and that whole area lots to see there.

    Body and Soul Area

Rob Hood, Dan Deacon, Ulrich Schnauss, Dark Room Notes

    The Food

The general carnival atmosphere with those brazilian drummers and the dinosaurs on stilts.

    Lowlights.

Getting soaked at the orb and returning to my tent to find it flooded and everything wet.

Trying to get some sleep in said tent

The Dance village. Bodytonic area just seemed to be an afterthought this year. I did more dancing up around that Arcadia thing (with exception of Rob Hood).

anyone catch The Breeders on Saturday? wasnt at the festival myself as I was just flying back from Scotland saturday afternoon. I stopped inside the airport to help a woman who's bags had fallen off her trolley and looked up to find I was being thanked by none other than Kim Deal ( Pixies, Breeders ). Had a nice chat with her as we were both walking out towards the busses. They were heading straight to EP. So pissed off I couldnt go down she kept saying I should come down which made it worse.. She was real nice. Would love to hear what their set was like and what stage / time they were on

    You lucky bastard!!
I didn't go to to EP but if I had, The Breeders would have been #1 on my list of bands to see. I'm kinda regretting not having gone :(
Can't believe you met Kim Deal. I am so jealous of you right now :mad:

Ah, you can't beat genius! Good to hear they can still lash it out.

Incidentally, someone above panned Underworld, lots on dance sites saying they really enjoyed it, and they wouldn't necessarily be Underworld fans.

anyone catch The Breeders on Saturday?

pretty cool story man. the band i came to see were on after the breeders, and they were pretty good. not familiar iwth teh music, but as a band... well, as a fan of music, what i love more than anything is seeing a band live, and it looking like they are all mates and love what they do. and i have never seen that more evidently in any band more than the breeders. the drummer never stopped smiling, the others were all laughs and jokes, every now and then someone would mess up a bit and they'd just laugh about it... so cool, calm and just chilled on stage, it was great to see. i was up the very front, so surrounded by massive fans, so it was hard not to get completely washed away with their love and enthusiasm for them.

    but yes... highlights.

elbow dedicating Leaders of the Free World to me. spent 5ish hrs in the electric arena so as to make sure i got front centre for elbow. guy from security recognised the tshirt, and came over told me just before breeders that elbow had cancelled! i nearly cried on the spot, told him not to joke about these things, i'd flown over from new zealand purely cos elbow were playing the picnic. security verified i was serious, and said he's see what he could do for me... came back a bit later, and said sorry, he couldnt get me in to meet them. no worries... but then, just before they did leaders, they pointed me out in teh crowd, thanked me for coming so far, and dedicated leaders to me! guy made a point of giving me a handshake and a kiss before leaving the stage, and security dude got me the towel and set list! absolute highlight! i'm never gonna be at a gig quite like that one again! it was just incredible!

    other hightlights..
    - all the veggie, vegan and free range/organic food! i was terrified i'd have to live off chips!
    - very freindly crowd, great atmosphere, got chatting with a load of real, genuine, down to earth enthusiastic music fans, and it's always so good to hear that
    - christy moore! one of the best crowds he's played to in years? most excellent. excellent excellent gig.
    - twas my first picnic, and i can't believe just how much effort went into everything visually. any other festival ive been to has been very 'functional'. some shops, campspace, and stages. tehre was just so much and so many pretty things, i couldnt believe it! it all looked just so amazing, and i had to just appreciate the effort that went into it all. even just coming in on saturday and sunday morning, and the area having been cleaned up, twas great.
    - henry rollins, killa, grace jones, midnight juggernaut, super extra bonus party (i think... 2 DJs, three bass/guitarists, drummer + rapper... from kildare apparently)..

    lowlights
-definitely the jetlag...missed tonnes of stuff when my body decided it just couldnt cope.
-drinking more on sunday than jetlag allowed to. big gap in the memory banks :(

    Highlights:
Dan Deacon: I'd never heard of him till I wandered into his set. Amazing
    Chromeo: Great funky bad
Ginderman: Nick Cave always delivers. Third time I've seen him
Tiga: Brilliant. First gig of the festival for me.
Body and Soul: What a great area for general randomness
The tea tent in Body and Soul: Best cup of tea ever and the guys serving it were cool.
    The Weather: We got lucky

    Low lights:
The toilets. They seem to get worse every year
Lack of video screens: The main stage/electric arena could do with these. They had some for Fatboy Slim a few years back
Underwold: They weren't awful but their set was hardly imaginative. And the crowds made it way to hard to enjoy it. One for the main stage I think.
The drink policy: It seemed to change every time I went into the main area.
The weather: I missed the burning of the wooden structure because it was pissing

Hey, i had a bit of chat with you before the Breeders came on, i remember very little of it, sorry if i was talking total bollix, i was after a load of bloody mojitos and buckfast. I was delighted when i heard Guy dedicate the song to you though. I've gotten the Seldom Seen Kid on the basis of the concert and it has absolutely blown me away. There's some truly amazing, beautiful songs on it.

The vocals are always really low in the mix on MBV tracks. Sound wasn't as good at EP as it was in Manchester though. But I could hear the vocals pretty well and I was right up at the barrier in the front. Probably helped if you had earplugs.

Really? That's terrible. The comfy crapper was great. It's nice to be able to go to the toilet wihtout gagging as soon as you enter the cubicle.

The best performance I saw all weekend was Grinderman - they were fantastic. Also nice to see Nick Cave sitting at the side of stage rocking out to MBV straight afterwards.

Rarely Seen Above Ground on Saturday night in the Body and Soul was great too. (at least I think that was his name - drummer that sounded a bit Talking Heads-ish) Does anyone know what happened that forced them to stop the music and make everyone at the front sit down that night? They mentioned fights but I couldn't see any trouble anywhere.

Steven? like i said, was in that bloody tent all day, ended up talking to a few people... but i think that was the person i ended up talking most to, and we were both quite a bit carried away trying to emphasise just how brilliant etc ceratin bands/musicians/etc were/are :D

alternatively, are you the girl that was beside me and came up to me the next day while i was eating pie?
or the guy from up North who's a member of the breeders fanclub, and had only gotten to see them for the first time this weekend?
wasnt talking to a lot of other people all that much, apart from those. :)

oh my god, absolutely. made my holiday! it's one thing to have seen them live, but to have the song dedicated to me, and everything, it'sj ust... unbelievable! im still in shock! :D my mate, who helped fly me home was somewhere towards the middle back, one of them nearly started crying for me, the other started shouting 'i flew her home'... apparently everyone was really chuffed for me :D aww man, jsut so happy, absolutely everything i dreamed they would be live.

Yes seemingly people just arent willing to pay the money at a lot of the festivals in the UK. They did well this weekend at the picnic, but I think its the exception rather than the rule for them. Its a shame because its a great idea and they had all their licensing etc. It certainly made my weekend so much better.

Toilet layout needed looking at... not as bad as 2006 but seemed to be worse than 2007. I feel that they are trying to force people into using posh camping by reducing the quality of the regular camping setup.

Hit the nail on the head.

That is the last EP we will be going to. We all went to the EP for the experience, as much as the line up (which was particularly poor this year).

But the greed on show was breath taking.

A totally inadequate amount of slit trench toilets that had spilt raw urine and excrement all over the place by Saturday evening. Toilet facilities that are cleaned and emptied, that don't spray piss and **** everywhere are no longer a basic requirement. They are now reserved for the 'luxury' campsite areas.

Massive Q's for the toilets in the Jimmy Hendrix campsite until they became practically unusuable due to sewerage leaks

Not even gonna go on. Went to a few decent gigs. Really enjoyed Goldfrapp and the Breeders.

But that doesn't make up for the rest.

The Electric Picnic as a novel and genuine experience = R.I.P.

That is unbelievable! For £13 i'm getting a wristband that will let me use them Thursday-Monday at Bestival this weekend. That's about the price of 3 pints.
What kind of stingey idiots would rather use a festival portaloo with no bog roll and often literally overflowing with human excrement, than pay (50p a go I think?) to use Comfy Crappers!

Good point... It almost felt like it had been (somewhat poorly) replaced by the Cosby stage at times.
Only checked the Bodytonic area out briefly on Sunday afternoon, if it hadn't been so far off the beaten path then I definitely would've checked out a few more acts there

    Are you crazy!!!
I had an outer body experience at Underworld, almost self-combusted. Sure I saw them before but Oh. My. Dear. God they were unbelievable and the big balloon thingys!!!
Only thing was I missed Crystal Castles and David Holmes because of it.

    Did anyone see David Holmes???

    Highs:
Being at the barrier for Sigur Rós... breathtaking.
MBV, particularly Soon and the Holocaust... woulda liked it to last a bit longer and for more people to leave in disgust, ah well :(
Hijacking the Foals interview in the Hot Press tent
    Foals' set
    Wilco
    The food. Nyom nyom.
    Body and Soul in general
    Spoken Word area in general
The fact that there was always something new or different to do

    Lows:
The flu sapping all my energy and causing me to sleep way too much
Securitiy inconsistencies vis-a-vis bringing booze into the main area
The RIDICULOUS amount of low end in the sound for some acts/tents
    People crying about toilets
John Lydon/The Sex Pistols. Who cares? You're a ridiculous parody of yourselves. Get lost.

That's not bad is it? Had a blast.

    Lows:

    Missing George Clinton:mad:
    Sex Pistols
Rain on sunday night which led to muck yesterday
    The mission home yesterday

Overall an excellent festival though, very enjoyable, will defo be back..

First EP (First festival in fact)

    Mine too!

    Dizzying Highs
    Goldfrapp
George Clinton - especially the dancer cum singer girl to the very right. Free your ass indeed.
Randomly bumping into friends of friends and then hanging out with them for most of the night.
    Chats with complete strangers.
    Bird watching.
Just chillin' with ma crew and shooting the shit in the campsite.
    John Lydon's rants. Coward.

    Terrifying Lows
Pitching my tent one tent away from people who took shifts keeping me awake.
Some dude with a megaphone who wouldn't shut up.
The toilets after the first day.
Body and Soul - leading up to the festival, and even during it, everyone was saying it was the best, so I ventured in a few times and every time I did it was total crap.

    Creamy Middles
MBV - Even though I'm not that into them I thought seeing them live would be really great but they were just so unenthusiastic. There was only one song they played that really got me going.
The Breeders - Saw them already this year and it was pretty much a repeat performance. They were fine like but nothing special.

Really? That's such a shame. It's a good idea and well implemented. Even if they just did it part time at the festivals where it paid it'd be great. All toilets at festivals should be comfy crappers.

I was there too but after twenty minutes some guy insisted on leaning on me for the rest of the gig. No matter what way I positioned myself he wouldn't fuck off. Guess that qualifies as a creamy middle.

There are ways of dealing with these people... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,364 ✭✭✭Phibsboro

    Overall, had a ball :D

    Highlights
George Clinton, or as I kept shouting up at him GEORGE CLINTON! I only vaguely knew who he was before the gig but jesus wept he was fantastic. Its all a bit of a blur but I seem to recall he didn't actually appear on stage until about 30 mins into his set and then the whole thing was like one long song. And the young James Brown character was great :)

Getting lost after leaving the punk cabaret on main stage and arriving into the spoken word area (which I somehow hadn't come across for the whole weekend) and randomly coming across someone called Jinx Lennon and a female singer. Stayed for 3 songs and he blew me away - amazing stuff in a very surreal way. (google says http://www.jinxlennon.com/music/7-Get_The_Guards.mp3 )

Food - pieminster, the revolving grill place.

Grace Jones - where did she get that accent from? And asking for a spliff :) Great stuff!

The Stunning - great reaction from the crowd, lads looked great :)

campervan - first year we managed to get one, rasher sandwiches for breakfast, dry bed, sitting down for a pint - great investment :)

Toilets - I think i just had a good run, but a s**te a day and each one in a nice clean portaloo with loads of the blue liquid stuff left (p only rule for the campervan toilet :D ). Trick is early afternoon in the main area.

Pop tent - I'm not a dance head but Martin McCann had me bopping til the end on Sat (the first time I think i've ever lasted to the end at EP). That and George made Sat possibly my best ever evening at an EP.

    Lowlights
The whole thing seemed more spaced out this year, even body and soul seemed bigger.
No secret late night pubs (that I could find anyways:))
    Main stage needs screens
One or two more "must see" acts woulda been good.

    c

Third Picnic and defo the best so far. It seemed there was as much going on as at Glasto, although my powers of perception were seriously reduced all weekend!

    Highlights:
George Clinton....so much better than last time i saw him in Tripod
    The Congo's...great Sunday afternoon reggae
    The Roots
Foals...had seen em on telly before and thought they were sh*te but really enjoyed the gig.
Human Jukebox....was hilarious, specially enjoyed 'Hits from the Bong'
Hangin out with lots of random people who were all up for a laugh
Pussy Parlour dancing with one of the barmaids....hot damn!
That area with the DJ in some cone shaped structure....really didn't know where i was all weekend.
    Fire breathing horse.
    Friendly sexay ladies.
    Forest walks.
    So much more....

    Lowlights:
    Comin back to work.
Gettin ditched at 6 in the mornin by a chick...even after taking her on the big wheel!
The cost of the big wheel.
Losing my bag with my favourite orange beer chang top....anyone find it?

Aye, that was me, we had a fairly animated discussion about music alright, i can remember ranting and raving at the time, fairly high brow stuff!!!:D :D

Quality, really delighted the way the gig went for you!!!

    Excellent performances by:

    Christy Moore
    Goldfrapp
    Sigur Ros /// Amazing!
Lisa Hannigan /// Great set... Swoon! I fell in love :p
The Kills /// they had a lot of energy and on-stage presence. Fell in love with Alison Mosshart (I know twice in one weekend ;)
Elbow /// really good performance. I was standing pretty close to the girl who came from New Zealand for the gig... Kudos
    Turin Brakes
    Foals
My Bloody Valentine /// Excellent... but incredibly loud :)

    Facilities:
    - I thought the toilets were ok. A few more places with urinals for blokes would have eased queues I think. Other than that I thought they were usual festival standard.

    - Food was excellent as usual. Diep (nyom, nyom) kept me going on saturday. Who else had the pad thai chicken twice? :D

    - Body & Soul area was great as usual. Didn't spend as much time there as I have in previous years, but its great in there.. The trad band in the 'high tea' tent there were really good.

    - Campsite was grand. We had good neighbours which always helps. We were camped where hendrix met warhol.

    - Silent Disco. Really good fun. I didn't go in previous years because of queues, but I thought this was one of the best bits of the picnic for me. Everybody sitting on the floor for 'rock the boat' has to be one of the highlights of my weekend :)

Overall I thought it was a good picnic. Probably missing a couple more big names for the music side of things, but overall I was suitably entertained for the weekend.

MBV, particularly Soon and the Holocaust... woulda liked it to last a bit longer and for more people to leave in disgust, ah well :(

As a matter of interest how long did the holocaust go on for? I nipped out at the start as I'd seen 35 minutes of it in Manchester and really wanted to go meet some people.

    Wilco

I'd forgotten about Wilco. Great set - really enjoyable although not quite as good as their Vicar Street set last year which was fantastic!

I was queueing outside the comfy crapper on Saturday and some eejit wandered past proclaiming that we all had "more money that sense" paying to use it. I'd rather pay a couple of euro and not have to gag and hover thanks very much. I have never walked in so much urine soaked ground as I did over the last weekend. There needs to be a serious re-think about the toilets before next year. That big urine tree near the Electric Arena was nasty too. When you see girls crouched down under it in broad daylight in the middle of the afternoon then there must something wrong with the facilities.

This was my first Picnic, and I had an amazing weekend.

I'm a little disappointed with myself. I overdid it slightly on Friday night and totally missed most of Saturday because I was dying. I missed loads of acts I would have loved to have seen (Cathy Davey, Lisa Hannigan, Underworld, George Clinton and loads of others). I'll be sure to take it easy on the Friday next year! I never made it to the Spoken Word, which I really would have loved to have seen. Same for the Silent Disco. But other than that, deadly weekend!

I didnt have too much problem with the toilets. They were generally disgusting (especially on the Friday night for some reason), but I just kinda decided not to care about it too much. Though, I nearly died with happiness on Monday morning when I discovered that the breakfast place at the Paintball area had actual toilets, with a sink and everything. I never thought I'd be so happy to see a toilet.

Aah, that was a good weekend =). I was working with the mobile-tea people, so a bit of a mix between work and fun was had, but it was all loads of deadly anyway!

    Highlights;

-Sigur Ros, though a blurry highlight as I was four sheets to the wind on Friday night... damn vodka jelly people...
    -DELICIOUS FALAFEL
-The shortcut/decent toilet finding powers of a trader band
-€60 in cup sales, on top of proper pay, free access and 35 abandoned cans
-Scrawling messages in the wood-effigy-thing, the decent moments of the burning
-Dancing in the Tara building, moderately out of it and utterly cheerful, carrying on into Body & Soul a while later, issuing 3D glasses to a bunch of pilled up randomers,
-Rock the boat under the dragon thing in B&S, followed by random ceili thing in the little house
-Catching Michael Franti in the chat tent and again for his gig. Always fantastic!
-Having a lovely time shopping for a present for my friend while wasted, being helped and humoured by a really nice shop assistant. Came out with a pretty skirt.

    Lowlights;
-Effigy taking an hour to get going
    -Sunday night's rain
-loud assholes (possibly from Cork) camped next to my group. Truly horrible people.
-Working at 7am on the Monday morning... Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, WASP! urgh... death...
-missing Christy Moore and Sinead O Connor, not generally seeing enough
tangible acts to describe why I had a wonderful time to people who ask who I saw
-Not seeing any gigs at/forgetting to take photos of the Salty Dog ship venue thing..
    -Not being still there.
