Do you tip the guys who hand out the Metro & Herald AM etc?

They are doing the exact same job, whereby they are giving you something for free, and are paid in turn by their employers who make their money from the advertising.

The position requires high levels of fitness and cycle experience, while carrying out rider's promotional duties.

They're only there to advertise 7up tbh and nobody's obliged to tip them - at all. That whole 'we make no money, only on tips' rubbish is just that - rubbish.

Took one of them myself around halloween last year (I think it was when they first came out) and did tip a little but was only because I was fed this rubbish. Now that I know thaty they're paid a 'competative salary' then the next time I do take one they can **** off, and I won't be rushing off to buy a 7up either.

    **** that.
If I do get one and the dude tries to tell me he doesn't get paid, he won't get a tip and I'll make him go further than I need to go just to piss him off.

Can't believe how many cheapskates we have on here. Sure they get paid. They get paid a little over minimum wage. They get paid for just sitting on O connell st. They only have to work when someone decide won't it be fun to take a ride in one. Then they are doing you a favour really. If you don't want to throw these guys a euro or two then find another way to get your lazy ass from o connell st to stephens green.

I met one of these guys at a party and he was very down to earth and nice to chat to. Someone said they pay a competitive wage. Hell so do mcdonald spar etc. An employer is always going to say they pay a competitive wage. Who would apply for a job if it advertised itself as low paid.

Yeah, but you don't tip the people who work in spar or McDonalds.

    Doing a favour my arse.

So you tip the people in mac donalds then do you? And the people who sweep the street? /edit: beaten t it by Terry.
Their salary is more than adequate for the work they do, otherwise they would not do it.

    i didnt know this!
Nope i shall not be tipping, but i will be bringing my whip for them, and i shall name each one of them jenkins, and order them to climb the highest hill as i whip them to victory!

How often do eat in Mcdonald, or buy a newspaper in spar. How often do you get a free lift in town. See the difference here. If you tipped the guy in mcdonalds and spar just because you would have to tip everyone and that would add up.

You take use of these ecocab once in a blue moon and would begrudge the guy a euro. One measly euro for a once off treat you decided to give yourself.

Besides I have worked in fastfood places and been offered tips but had to refuse them resulting in the customer being extremly offended. In a normal shop fastfood envioroment staff are not permitted to carry money.
It is for the staffs benefit as much as the customers. If the till was short and the staff had cash on him. It would be assumed he had stolen it.

You prolly have no problem leaving your drink at the bar coming going home time though. Some people are so funny really.

Mr. Pink: Uh-uh. I don't tip. Nice Guy Eddie: Whaddaya mean you don't tip? Pink: I don't believe in it.Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?Mr. White: (laughing) I love this kid, he's a madman, this guy.Blonde: Do you have any idea what these ladies make? They make ****.Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit.Eddie: I don't even know a Jew who'd have the balls to say that. So let's get this straight. You never ever tip?Pink: I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that ****'s for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin their job.Mr. Blue: Our girl was nice.Pink: Our girl was okay. She didn't do anything special.Blonde: What's something special, take ya in the kitchen and suck your dick? They all laugh.Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.White: Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long ****in time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times.Blonde: What if she's too busy?Pink: The words "too busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.Eddie: Excuse me, Mr. Pink, but the last thing you need is another cup of coffee.

Blah blah blah blah blah Someone said they pay a competitive wage. Blahdie blahdie blah blah

Yeah that was me, and it was quoted directly from their own website. Tipping culture in this country is a load of crap to be honest. The amount of extra cash my step sister used to make years ago when she was 15 / 16 working in a bar on tips was unreal. I have no problem with people accepting tips, but I won't be the one tipping someone for a job they're already getting paid to do unless they've really gone out of their way to look after you.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,397 ✭✭✭✭Degsy

I think expecting a tip for doing a job for which you're already being payed is pushing your luck.

I didn't know these were in other places! They've popped up all around Galway city since the start of the summer.
Are the ones in Galway the same system (i.e. sponsored / free) though? O_o

They certainly look nothing like the ones on that site anyway.

And yes, it IS worth a tip ... ! :p

Some would go to a fastfood place as a once in a blue moon treat too. So what other criteria does a service have to provide before you think a tip is in order? You are right, you would have to end up tipping everybody.

I know plenty of wealthy pensioners with free travel who do not tip bus drivers. I know many people who got cheap or free ryanair flights who do not tip the air hostesses on the way out, scabby bastards:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭hussey

it is a free service, that doesn't mean they are working for free.
It is paid by advertisement of 7Up.
Do you tip the people who hand out free stuff on streets as part of a promotion?
No, they are providing a service and getting paid for it, just like the people who are getting paid to provide a service by a free lift.

If people want to tip them, fair play, but it shouldn't mean you have to.

The US is foo-barred, people are fake friendly because that is their job, see how 'friendly' they are if you forget to tip them.

I waited 20mins to be served in Vegas because I didn't tip a barman, I had no idea you were suppose to tip a barman.

If you tip in Ireland you get better service=fact. I know half of the bums on this site couldn't afford to tip your postman at Christmas. The reason the service quality is so bad in Ireland is the staff don't care as they are getting paid anyway.

You have to wait for it and it wont go exactly where you want to go.

I don't see the problem in tipping if it's a job well done. I got below minimum wage in a pub I was working in and the tips were lousy. You could bring loads of rounds to one table during the night and be sweetness and light and they would give nothing. I hate that.

When i worked in Sea Life doing the birthday party tours some parents would give me 5e or 10e to say thanks. I know it's my job, but I made sure I did an extra good job and that the kids enjoyed it.

I tip my waxer, hair dresser, taxi drivers (if they're sound) and waiters. It depends on the quality of service I receive.

Thats why my post is missing. Though i did tip him at christmas. I think he now expects a tip every week in order to deliver my post.

Your attitude stinks. You expect tips. You should work hard and honestly and be grateful for any tips you receive as they are over and beyond your professional remuneration.
