People not tipping the free bicycle taxi lads.

On more than one occassion I've seen people disembarking from the free bicycle taxis in the city centre just mumble thanks and head off without giving any sort of a tip at all. In my opinion that's the height of ignorance. I mean, I know we don't have an ingrained tipping culture here like in the US for example. But to expect someone to pedal you around the town and not even throw them a euro or two is completely scabby. I should point out as well that the main culprits I've witnessed are middle aged women out shopping, laden with bags from brown thomas and arnotts etc If you're not prepared to tip I reckon don't get in the taxi in the first place.

    Didn't know they were free.

It's free trips around the city for me on my lunchbreak. Ooohhh Yeaahh!!

Now cycle you wild stallion, CYCLE!!!! :D

Same here, Fishy. I reckon a lift from O'Connell Street to Coolock is worth a euro tip. Yeeha, giddy up!

It is hardly free if you are expected to pay.

They don't have 7up etc plastered across them for free tbh.

That said, I would tip them if I ever used them.

A tip should never be seen as obligatory. By definition, they are discretionary.

As solitaryman said, they are paid a wage. It is not up to us to supplement that wage and make 7up's advertising even cheaper for them. If they're not happy with that wage, then they should leave the job.

Tips are "To Insure Promptitude"-if the jobs already done why bother?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

never knew they were free my self, next time in dublin might make use of one, do they have a maximum journey distance, or an area in which they only run, would they take me to say, rathfarian, or dundrum, or say even the airport

    :D

haha, in seriousness, would throw them a few euro if i used one around the city centre

They get paid a wage like everybody else. I'd imagine its a decent wage for the job too. If this was the US, anybody doing this job would be getting a small basic wage, and would rely on a tip to boost their wages, just like bar staff over there. So since this isn't the US, and we don't have a tipping culture, I'm going to hitch a ride tomorrow and not tip. Just for you. :)

I didn't know they were free. That's awesome.

I'd tip them if i was to get one.
Maybe a euro or whatever I had in change, but only because I'm fat, so that means extra effort on their part.

I know. It should be advertised FFS.

There I was in the city centre the other day, walking from Drumcondra station to O'Connell street. WALKING when there was a free taxi thing that I was unaware of.
The sweat was pissing out of me.

Didnt know they were free either!

tbh Ive only ever noticed them on Grafton Street on a Friday or Sat night. Do they operate in the day?

these poor guys are going to be a lot busier come monday morning!

They only go a mile radius. About as far as Stephen's Green to Parnell Street. Yea, they're going all day every day from what I can tell; seeing them around.

They get minimum wage afaik. If anything happens to the eco cab they have to pay, and they get a lot of abuse from skangers. Also, they have to stay with the eco-cab during their lunch hour.

My friend and I got a lift from a lovely fella, my mate was flirting away with him and we had a good laugh chatting to him. I think between us we gave him 6e. They're cool yolks to have a go on. Pretty scary though.

    Never herd such crap.
ITS A FREE SERVICE, if somone wants to tip, fine. if you dont, no biggie, they dont work for free and dont rely soley on tips liks waiters in the US, they would have to get the minimum wage.

It's fairly tough work, they are CYCLING not driving! No harm in throwing them a euro. Would cost that much to get the bus, well e1.05...

Biko's powerless. He's out of his jurisdiction. This thread's been an inter-county federal case since this post:

I was actually in town on the first day they were active with two of my friends. We were going somewhere near the Bleeding Horse and this guy took two of my friends. I was left alone and had to run after the damn ecocab and I even tripped halfway. It got back to them though when the ecocab guy started bsing about how they didn't get paid at all and relied on tips. They felt obliged and the only change they had was a fiver.

But yeah, they do get paid. If you look at the ecocab, there's advertisements all over them and that's how they make money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

Jaysus I didn't know they're free, and it's their job. They already get paid for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,094 ✭✭✭✭javaboy

I wouldn't feel obliged to tip them really.

There are people paying a fortune to gyms for the privilege of getting some exercise.
Then there are people who don't pay for gyms and just use the great outdoors for exercise.
Then you have this lot who actually get paid to exercise?

Gym fitness without gym fees. Check.
    Feelgood environmental smugness factor. Check.
Extra free time due to not needing to exercise outside of work. Check.
    Minimum wage. Check.
Meeting interesting people (even if they are cockteases). Check.

Sounds like they have it a bit easy tbh. Why should I tip them?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 395 ✭✭RoosterIllusion

"Free bicycle taxi" earns them nothing.

"€1 bicycle taxi" earns them 1€.

If it's free then they can expect to not be paid and any payment they do receive anything it is a welcome bonus.

Your comments become invalid when you realise that most of those points could be applied to you walking instead of putting your lazy ass on one of the 7-Up bikes

I always have to laugh when im in my bros restaurant and he serves people. He makes all the money from overcharging the poor sods and then they go and throw him extra. He also says that people tipping his staff allow him to pocket he difference of what he would have to pay them over and above the minimum wage to keep them working there.

You're only lining the employers pockets by tipping the staff. Dont tip the staff and eventually they will move or be paid more to keep them.

We dont live in the USA. People dont get paid below the odds for you to make up their salaries by tipping them. They get at least the minimum wage which the general public should not be expected to top up. If the minimum wage is not enough to keep the employees then the employer should top it up, not the punters.

If someone gives me something extra or a much better experience than i expect them to already do as its their job, then i'll tip them. But people should not make a habit of tipping in Ireland. Thats why we have a minimum wage.

Em maybe you missed the point. This is their job. So they get all those benefits from their job. Walking around the place doesn't pay very well.

And I don't have a lazy ass. He just has a lot of other things on at the moment and hasn't got time for exercise. Attack the post and not the poster. :pac:

I mean they can expect to not be paid by the people they gives rides to. I have no idea what the situation is with their parent company or whatever, and frankly no person they give a ride to should care either, if they are relying on tips, which by itself is pointless in this country, then I would never give them business.

I tip well trained, mannerly staff (few and far between) or sexy waitresses, rarely Irish :(

What the hell are you doing man? You're ruining it for us cheapskates! If everybody takes your advice and the employer's eventually have to pay their staff more, the food prices will inevitably go up to pay the difference. Everybody's food prices.

The current system means generous suckers supplement the staff's wages while me and you get slightly cheaper meals. Under your proposed system, we'll all be paying more to evenly tip the staff across the board.

Plus the tipping system works as a kind of incentivised bonus scheme. Bad attitude=no tip. Good attitude=tip (sometimes).

If the employers just raise the wages then we'll all be indirectly tipping our waiters regardless of the quality of service.

Its not a business, ist purly for advertism, if it was a buisness they would charge for the service the same as any other buisness.

It also means "crap waiter = too expensive = fired" and leaves only good ones.

There is a solution to this though. Scrap the minimum wage for tipping jobs and really let the tips make up their wages. We cant have it both ways. the way it is now is just taking the mick out of the regular punters.

Tax tips (and FF will jump on anything they can tax :) ) and tax employers who allow tipping in their establishments too.

But in the current situation if the wages are crap and not enough to survive on, then the crap waiter will not survive. He simply won't earn enough. But with your idea, the manager will have to keep a much closer eye on his staff in order to figure out who the better waiters are or rely on complaints from customers to tell him. And we all know how reluctant Irish diners are to complain. I think the current almost Darwinian system works ok.

Interesting but my original point stands. If you tax tips, the staff won't earn as much and the wages will have to be hiked. So the food prices will go up again. So the customer will pay more. The staff will get the same net pay. The employer will get the same net profit. And the government will get extra tax take.

If you ignore the employer and employee then all that's happening is the diner is indirectly giving the taxman donations. Boo to your pro Fianna Fail system I say. Boo.

Dont have the exact amount but its approx 4.4 eco friendly. on the eco-scale.

I see these eco-cabs are going to be deployed in small towns such as New Ross in the coming months too.

They will be on the water though. They have a swimmer pulling you up and down the river. You cant tip him though as the speedos wont hold much.
