You might nip up to London and get mine while your at it:D,I added the Mosin on Friday to the collection from Ryton arms,nice friendly people to deal with,thay have a couple of Brens on at the moment,I could of bought one of these at one of the fairs I went to during the summer(two weeks of partial sunshine)I figured it would be more hassle than it would be worth trying to explain to the gaurds how I got it so decided to leave it behind,so whats salute like then handling all those weapons,a child in a sweet shop I bet:phave a good one anyway

Got down yesterday at around 11 am to this one,this was held in Charles Fort overlooking the sea and Kinsale town,a cracking setting within the fort.We were met at the gates to be told that the admission fee had been lifted for the show while it was on,plenty of reinactors walking around mingling with the crowd and all the people that were there were more than happy to hand any of there weapons over to the public to handle and inspect:),the show started with the Romans,Normans and Barbarians doing there piece explaining the different weapons and tatics used which was quite interesting and finished it off with a simulated fighting scene,next up were the Napolionic and British battle reinactment which was good and loud with there muskets blasting away,this lasted over twenty minutes and once was finished all the kids in the crowd were invited to join in with the scene,the coast gaurd was present also and done an excellent life saving display,as for stalls there was only around a dozen or so but talking to the guys on them was definately worth while for the advise they offered on various subjects,also there was someone there that had an amazing display of Irish related medals, insignia,badges and paperwork,you name it he had it,I've never seen so many Uprising medals and war of independce medals including minutures in all my life,the cost must of ran into the thousands,leaving the show we were met by a German reinactment group(Kampfgruppe Knittle) who were very friendly,these lads encouraged everyone to have a look and were more than happy to leave people get photos with there bike and weapons,all in all a great way to pass a sunday and will definately be on the calendar next time

The groups really need to coordinate the events more to avoid clashing; pick one and make it the official national show.

Maybe not everyone is prepared to travel to Dublin for a show and are quite happy to stick to there local events

dear enfield i am looking for a 2nd world war uniform either british or us for a classic shoot in the midlands and would be obliged if you could give me information on where i could rent or purchase one. i am not a re-enactor, but found last sundays show in swords very interesting and i helped out on one of the stalls due to my ex military service. thank you

I know, but maybe if there was one big event on a weekend with no local events. Irelands War and Peace. You need a big national gathering at least once a year. The Romans at Salute were from Cork, most of the IMVG are from well outside Dublin.
I wasn't attacking local events but there's something to be said for the larger ones too. It's in everyones interest.

Local ones need to give way to the larger ones and schedule on a day when there isnt a clash with a national one - that would seem to be the fairest solution.

I would agree with both of ye on this,I'd be first in line if for a ticket if there was an Irish war and peace show,it should be organised within an national show committee(if there is such) to sort dates out for events,all I'm saying is some people may not be prepared to travel as far as Dublin for a show,for example it would take me four hours to drive there,it only takes me twenty minutes to Kinsale,you must look at the bigger picture,some of these events that are been held around the country are been held at the same time as local events or festivals and may have done so for a long time,these festivals have been held on the same dates for years,you take out a local re-inactment for an annual show and its possible that any re-inactment may become lost to that area,the show I went to Sunday was small and these need crowds to make them worth while to be held there,should a National show work around the local events or the other way around,thats for the people who do the re-inactment to decide

Finally got around to a report on Salute. We left Tipp at 11 and RV’d with the convoy on the M9 and headed for the toll plaza with the plan that we might get through for free. I was toying with the idea of letting off the siren as we got near the plaza but I could see yer woman already with her hand out so I stopped and she waved us through. We got to Salute and got a great welcome. First thibng at such shows when you arrive is to set up sleeping accommodation. Our truck took out the bell tent I bought in Beltring and it was comfort all the way, loads of room for two. Beside us was a big Russian truck that I had not seen on the circuit before. I got talking the owner ( ould fella Even older than me if you can envisage such a thing) told me he bought is for £3000 in the UK. It had 6000 on the clock and was 30 odd years old. That’s amazing says I, that’s nothing says he……………take a look in the back. Up the steps I went and into the back. Both sides of the walls were covered in computers and a roller map graph thingy with a needle in it drawing type of thing. He tells me that the military who sold it just plugged out the stuff and closed the doors. Even the seats were still there!!

Anyway.
The lads then went down to the Coachmans inn for a bite to eat and a few bevies. I socialised with the other clubs and then settled down for the evening. We set up a rain shelter and I had made a metal coal fire ( in work) and set it up. Took out the guitar and a bottle of rum and coke and lit me pipe ( I am an ould fella). Thenwe hear that the barbecue was ready so we went over and had grub and headed back to the campfire which was glowing nicely. I murdered a few songs and as the night went on and our vision became clearer with the alcahol we had visits from other campers from different clubs and they were made as welcome as possible. Songs, thousands of years old were tortured and laid down like fine whines but the greatest of comeraderie and crack was had by all. Things got dim and I woke in a bell tent in the morning. Those feckin Romas how the ‘eck are they so cheerfull of a morning? They look great but eat terrible looking tack. The yanks were up and about getting ready for the battle in the afternoon. The Germans had set up checkpoints and tents and displayed their weapons. There was a stall for airsoft (more on this on boards.ie re; airsoft) Great guys and are reall y heavy into it. They put on a hostage scene in the arena around lunchtime and it was very effective. The free Polish Army were also in attendance and supported the British Army and the Yanks in the afternoon battle. There were lots of stalls selling everything from replica weapons, bayonets, repro badges and uniforms, Army surplus etc. One stall sold chocolate and the usual chip vans. I counted 51 vehicles on the Saturday not including the three tanks, there were more on Sunday. It was like a mini Beltring with the same spirit of safety and ease. Now then this guy approached me and I could swear he was from a new version of hidden camera type of thing tried to take a rise out of me, trying to incite me to say something bad about the British while all the time holding his mobile phone in front of me. I told him I do not like to be recorded and he fecked off. He did the same to lots of people there so don’t be surprised if he is on telly making fools out of the unwary. I gave him a monosyllabic conversation which did not please him. He was pointed out to security and was watched the whole time he was there. Either a nutter or a set up guy for a new naked camera thingy.
Evening came and the sellers settled down their stalls and we headed for a few pints. I came back and set up the fire and settled down for a quiet night. Alcaholic beverages were running a bit low so we got ready for an early night. On me last swig one of the Yanks came down and asked if we would like to join them for a session. Not at all says I take the guitar and enjoy yourself. Away he headed with the guitar under his oxter. Will we or wont we……well we did, we headed for the yanks camp and they were sitting with the romans!!!!! Splitters!!! Now the Roman wimmen had their hair done up gorgeous and were very sittable besidable so we did and the best music session Iever had occurred that night with a heap of yanks at their fire (we went back and got ours and brought it down to them,) fantastic. The next morning the Romans
were bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready for battle.So were the Yanks British, Polish and Germans and it was all played out in the arena. Afterwards we went to the carpark where the tanks were doing their thing. Two of them had big guns and looked great but there was one, a T90, driven by a Czech Army Tank driver
showed how a tank could be driven. He slammed on the breaks and the two guys in the back almost fell out. A tank wheelie if you like. We wrapped up and headed home at 5pm and we all lived happily ever after.
I got to meet croppy boy, a nice guy.

Rashers you would have died of nostalgia and you could have handled all of the guns there. Kowloon, Prodg and myself would have looked after ya.
Remember the fair today in the teachers club. Not a lot of tables and is run by the medal club. I think its is still 2 euro to get in instead of the five charged by the IMCC.

I was not at the Fair in the Teachers Club but I was talking to one of the dealers and he says that it was a disappointing day for the sellers and buyers. The sellers were dissappointed because of the lack of punters and the lack of advertising for the fair itself. The punters were dissappointed at the lack of Militaria jumble. i.e heaps of stuff on tables that you can rummage through. I have often got bargains at the Teachers Club and have even taken a table myself to offload excess militaria. I found it small and there not a lot of punters. The table cost was cheap and the parking was free and the wife and daughter can walk into town for a few hours. Often I just about made the money to cover the table cost. Its a friendly place but not a place that makes millionaires. Perhaps they would get more sellers and buyers if they advertised it more?
Thats my pennyworth.

You know how difficult it is to get a 'final answer' from them but we got there in the end. I got the duaghter to create a page on the net with a link to the map that shows the route and gives all the information. Any questions you have I am happy to answer.
I represent no club or association and invite all re-enactors and military vehicle owners and hope to get some support from as many as possible as I have supported you in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

FINALLY back on line,so Tom where can we buy this book??,I love reading about the Irish connection to WW1,I did make a comment on a different thread that it would be great to see a book that would cover the whole country but until that happens county to county will do fine,I can only imagine the time and effort that has gone into something like this,well done and I hope its a success:)

You can buy the book in any bookshop anywhere in the world after Nov 1st. Its calles Tipperary War Dead by Tom Burnell and Ruth Burnell. I also did one with the brother that covers WW1 and WW2 war dead from Wicklow ( out in Feb sometime) and am just finishing one for Wexford for ww1 only. I had a book out before called 'The Anglicized words of Irish Placenames' and you can but that in Easons if you so wish.
If anyone has period uniforms and wish to parade with us we would be happy to have ye. I meant to add that Irelands Memorial Records' is supposed to cover Ireland but covers only about 70% as far as I can see and accepts all soldiers in Irish regiments as being Irish, go figuire.

Lots of things on next weekend. There is a Militaria fair in the North Star hotel in Amiens Street on Saturday morning at 10. Usually charge a fiver entrance.
Remember money is tight ( I seen the results in Beltring in July and so did the dealers who will be at the fair, fewer traders, few buyers and less choice) so you should have better results with haggling. Remember if a dealer says he does,nt know about an item he is selling, walk away from it. They dont buy stuff they know nothing about.
An Armistice parade down the square in Thurles on Saturday will commence at 4pm. We have about 17 vintage military vehicles and over 50 re-enactors of various wars from the Romans to Nam. A Book launch of 'Tipperary War Dead' will take place in Kevin Ryans pub in Holycross at 8pm sharp and a sit down music session afterwards, tea and sambos.

From Rev Mark Hayden ( a good buddy and author of German Ribbon Bars and also another book about German Chaplains);

A service of Remembrance will take place on Sunday November 9th in Christ Church Gorey at 10.30am. The units attending are the RDF, IUNVA, An Garda Siochana, Fire Service, RNLI, Irish Coast Guard, Ambulance Service, Irish Red Cross, RBL, Boys Brigade, Girls Brigade, Scouting Ireland, Civil Defence, Slaney Search and Rescue, St. Michael's Pipe Band and the Arklow Silver Band.

The colour party is being made up of IUNVA veterans this year for the first time, led by Sergeant Major William Gilbert.

The preacher is the Venerable Chris Long, rector of Enniscorthy who served as an RAF padre for 22 years.

Everyone is especially welcome to this ecumenical service and if any of you have served and have medals/unit insignia then feel free to wear them.

Wreaths will be laid in memory of deceased colleagues and refreshments will be provided after the service.

This service has grown over the past number of years and it is wonderful to see so many veterans from all services joining together to remember their service time and deceased friends.

Feed back I am getting indicates that sales were down by one third but prices being asked for are rising. It will not take long for the sellers involved to cop on and realise that there is a recession on and the price of things are coming down. There were lots of people through the door but everyone is watching their pennies. Look at ebay, although I snagged a nice little deal myself recently I can see the prices of Irish medals reducing. In Beltring this year it was the same, attendance was down, the amount of dealers was down, the selection of stuff for sale was down and next year will be the year for the bargains...if you have the money. Like buying property now is not the time, let things settle. Whatever you are after should be cheaper in the future. Ebay sold a Black and Tan medal for £330 only yesterday. One sold at the fair in the North Star for 500 euros so you can see how the prices are coming down.
As Brendan Behan says; 'Hold your hour and have another'.
be careful out there guys and gals. Next fairs should be in (North Star Hotel) February and ( in Teachers Club run by the medal Society) in March.

It looks like the Cavan Military Vehicle/Military show might just go ahead on April 4/5th. I will confirm when it is nailed down. Its a big enough show and armoured vehicles come down from the North for it. You can buy militaria at it also and there will be lots of guns for ye to handle, same as Salute. There will be re-enactors there also. Its a huge setting, all under shelter lots to do with different arenas and areas.
I will double check all details and let you know as soon as I do. Its to be held in the Equestrian Centre on the edge of town.

I was there too along with 3 guys from waf, & it was pretty empty. A handful of stalls and each one had far fewer items than they normally do.

One new addition was a bookseller, selling militaria related books for about 25% of what you would pay in a high street bookshop. Otherwise many overpriced low-mid level items which were not selling.

There was a guy at the fair that had three belts on the table, two Irish army dress belts with brass buckles to the Officer training corps and the School of music and a 1908 Pattern web belt. They did not sell and not one person asked how much were they (there was no price on any of them). This shows the lack of interest on the day.

Just got a return call there and the news is that the regular Medal Society event at the teachers club IS going ahead tomorrow Saturday 7th March.

A military fair of medals&militaria

admission:€2.

fair will include medals badges general militaria helmets books etc. free valuations offered. all welcome

Was at this on saturday and in addition to being badly advertised and overpriced there wasnt really that much selection.

Among the notable items was an Iron cross 1939 bar which was dual priced at £160 or €240. I think the northern dealers were showing contempt for their southern customers - completely taking the piss with those conversion rates. Attendance of customers and dealers was way down on last time and rather than lower prices to come closer to internet levels they seemed to simply have made less of an effort. Hopefully the Auction on 18th April will have more items and more earthbound starting prices if not it could be a wipeout for them.

As the site says;-"NOTE: In order to be able to verify the authenticity and bona-fides of bidders, commission bids by e-mail will only be accepted from current members of the Medal Society of Ireland who have their contact details on file with the membership secretary."
So basically either you join the medals society and you can then bid by email or you turn up on the day.
I will not be able to make it but let us know how you get on if you attend.

I picked up an WWI German Armistice map that I am going to get framed, it had an estimate of €50 to €80 but I got it for €30. Also won Lot No. 112 - the WWI panaromas of the battlefields book for €10 (but the seller never showed so it was basically withdrawn).

The Dan Breen book went for about €180 I think. The prussian war 'peace breaks out' document went for approx €65.00 (which I am kicking myself for not staying in the bidding for).

Many items did not sell (including the TT callcards thank god). The german medals all sold fairly sharpish as I remember though the Third reich cloth items were pricey and withdrawn. Far as I remember the RIC stuff did not sell too great either.

Some medals that should have sold didn't and others fetched good prices.

A few different lots of british wwI medals went for differing amounts from €10-15 upwards. One medal set (I think lot 68) got a very good price when a mini bidding war broke out but eventually peace was restored.

There were some bargains there for all budgets (lot 64 went for €5) & it was good overall, a bit better than I expected.

I will definitely go to the next one - they could even do more than one per year in my opinion going by attendance & interest.
