They don't recruit that often for the airport police, and as you can imagine when they do the interest is huge..

Why? is it a good job? Are they not security guards?

The Airport Police is a Government job, very well paid and a great pension at the end of it.

Very good. Didn't realise that. when you say "well paid", what kind of money is it per annum?

AP is NOT a government job. You are directly employed by the DAA.

They are simply 'authorised officers' of the Minister.

For these positions you call 01 8249342 where you get through to an automated answering service - you leave your full name and MOBILE number - you are then placed on waiting list for these positions - DAA recruit anything from once to 5 times in a year, maybe up to 20 positions available at any one time - There are over 1000 names on the waiting list - some of these will drop off as they are contacted - when you leave your name you will receive a text within 10 days to confirm you have been placed on the list - you will not be contacted again until they get to your name on the list
The first part of the process is the aptitude test which is a basic verbal comprehension exam - then you are 1st round interviewed by Multiflex and 2nd round interviewed by DAA - you must then pass a full medical - you can not be color blind and drugs testing is included
Most positions are part time to start with.
It is not recommended applying fo rthis job if your reasons are purely to get into the Airport Police as you will be very disappointed - over 500 ASU on site all wanting to eventually get into Airport Police who recruit only every so often as there is no turnover in that department - you need to be extremely Customer Focused as this is not viewed as a "Security Guard" Role but a Customer Service role that involves inspection and screening of people and their baggage - tatoos will not make you fail the medical but do need to be kept covered at all times - CV's are NOT sent to DAA from Multiflex but the other way around

That dont sound great for people who wish to get into the airport police, only part time aswell. and in the current climate where jobs are going, money is tight, even menial jobs are going to be hard to get..is the DAA only recruiting from this customer service freindly blah blah blah search unit to the Airport police or are they still gong to advertise through the papers aswell ? does anyone know

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 Classybird

As far as I know they only recruit from the Airport Search Unit now. If you were to enquire with them they would tell you to send your CV to Multiflex who look after the recruitment for the Airport Search Unit - there are over 1000 names on the waiting list but alot of these will drop off as they recruit throughout the year. There is very little turnover in the Airport Police so you will be waiting I'm afraid!
Might have better luck in Shannon or Cork perhaps

Is it okay for them to recruit from the ASU only? I would have thought that there would have to be an open competion for the role. What experience , qualities , qualification etc are required?

    Thanks

    Ducksie

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 Classybird

They do not have to recruit externally but may choose to do so - I heard through a reliable source that they may be recruiting over the next couple of months so watch out for advertise as I believe they are going external for this one - but normally do are not obliged to recruit outside of the DAA.

    Thanks Classybird

Any idea on the number of vacancies that may arise? Also do you know of the details of the recruitment process(is it aptitude test , interview etc?) and what qualities/experience is required?

    Regards

Those menial jobs pay surprisingly well, so yes they'll be snapped up. My advice is apply early, keep an eye on daa.ie. Airport Police will possibly be displayed there but remember that 24 out of the last 25 recruits were ex-ASU.

If you want a policing job without having to lick ASU arse for a couple of years, realistically, join the guards.

They are always advertising as they seem to have a huge turn-over of staff which doesn't give a great impression. A lot of people seem to use it as a filler until something else comes along.

You'll need some form of transport for early shifts unless you're beside the airport. I'm open to correction but the shifts seem to be from 5am to 1pm, 1pm to 9pm and then a night shift.

I've no idea what they are paid but I'd guess that it is fairly mediocre.
They used to have an electronic sniffer to scan your bags on the entrances in the 80's and 90's,
We ,as staff believed they worked,or was it a con to deter loyalist bombers?
It would be a lot cheaper,if they worked, than all the search units

Only just saw that one. Their shift are all over the place tbh. Something for everyone.

Free staff parking and shuttle bus, and free staff taxis (minus a charge for administration etc, bout €3.50 for me - but I'm NOT in the ASU just DAA) once you live within 10 miles of the GPO (antiquated).

I dont know what the process is for directly recruting Airport Police - only the Search Unit - Aptitude test consists of basic Verbal Comprehension - then there is first and second round interview

    Thanks Classybird

Do you have any details on payscales for the role?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 Classybird

Search Unit start on a basic of around €33k - if you are full time - but males never go in on a full time basis - a gender balance has to be kept as only men can search men and women search women so sometimes, even though they dont advertise the fact obviously, they will only recruit men and sometimes only women depending on numbers required - Men will always go in on a part time basis only so you would need to be in a position to take that kind of work for up to a year maybe more - although you can get overtime hours that will bring you up to full time hours but that is not guaranteed every week!

    Thanks for that Classybird

Would it be possible to have a monday to friday job and have the part time role at the weekend or are part timers on a 7 day roster?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 Classybird

Shift patterns will vary as they recruit - sometimes fall over the weekend jus t- or sometimes Monday to Thursday - shifts can vary 5am - 1pm / 1pm - 9pm or night shifts - depends on whats on offer when they recruit - shifts can probably be changed down the line but it would be recommended you do not insinuate the hours dont suit you when you are going through - there is a very long waiting list - I believe to be up to 1000 applicants - you need to call a girl called Deirdre @ Multiflex to be placed on the waiting list 01 8249342 - its an answering service and you leave your name and mobile number

    Hi
I HAVE BEEN AN ASU FOR 3 YEARS NOW.IT IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT A MENIAL JOB.WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO THREATS ON BOARD AND AIRCRAFT-NOTHING MENIAL ABOUT THAT.

THERE IS 3 WEEKS TRAINING ONCE YOU HAVE PASSED INTERVIEWS, MEDICALS ETC.THE PAY IS VERY GOOD. START AT 15.20 AN HOUR FOR THE FIRST YEAR AND IT GOES UP EVERY YEAR FOR 5 YEARS PAY SCALE.
LOTS OF OVER TIME , BANK HOLIDAYS ETC.

THEY ARE VERY STRICT ABOUT ATTENDANCE, SICKS ETC.

WE ARE SEMI STATE.THERE IS NO A HUGE STAFF TURNOVER-DEPENDING ON PASSENGER NUMBERS WE HIRE MORE STAFF.

THEY ARE NOT HIRING FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.

ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY IN YOUR LIFE-THIS IS CHECKED AND A 10 YEAR BACKGROUND CHECK.

THE PEOPLE YOU WORK WITH BECOME A FAMILY AND THE AIRPORT IS LIKE A LITTLE VILLAGE.
I LOVE WORKING THERE AND THE BEGRUDGERS WHO CALL IT A MENIAL JOB CAN FXXXK OFF. WE GET A GREAT PENSION AND ARE HAPPY.

Only took an ASU member a year to dig up this thread....I suppose if we'd had 101ml of liquid in it they would have found it sooner :p

Regarding the "menial" comment, I think the poster was referring to the powers the ASU have...the ASU have no powers other than search, they cannot stop someone other than inside the security check area, they cannot detain people merely refuse them progress past the security area.
Anything else needs the airport police or the Gardai called depending on what is found in a search !

most people respect our jobs, but a small porportion like yourself are just plain begrudgers. its sad really.

so please refrain from talking about something you know nothing about.

I know quite a lot about the ASU and many other DAA matters. I wasn't begrudging your job I was merely making a joke about how serious the liquid threat is taken and also stating that the ASU has no other powers other than search and refusal of access.

You've been doing the job 3 years but you mightn't realise that 20 years ago the Airport Police had a lot MORE security checks with detector wands at the main ENTRANCE to the airport to search people/bags and metal detectors and x-ray scanners for hand luggage just before the duty free on the way to the piers, except that the airport police had more powers....Dublin Airport was frequently rumoured to be a target for loyalist groups during the troubles so it has always had fairly good security and the airport police are trained to a very high level (being trained fire-fighters as well as airport police).

Yes the searches are more thorough/take longer nowadays (purely due to the liquids restriction and shoes) and there's better hardware available and systems in place what with false alerts being sent to the x-ray scanners every so often to make sure the staff are on their toes.

My only criticism of the ASU is that the DAA don't open enough stations during peaks times but thats DAAs fault and not the ASU members

I'm glad you're happy in your job, enjoy it !
