Should passengers be alllowed off a plane if they smell a rat?

Reading a horrific story about the recent crash of a MD82 a passenger was concerned about the initial trouble that aircraft had and wanted to get off the plane but was refused by cabin crew. Text messages were exchanged to verify this,

Particularly with banana run airlines that use 20 YO aircraft I think that there should be an option to get off any plain if it has been delayed for over an hour with mechanical trouble.

They should definitely be allowed off the plane if they smell a snake. We all know how that ends up...

God, what a crap thing to have happened. Initially I would say yes, if a passenger is distressed and wants to immediately leave the plane, then they should be allowed do so.

But, what guidelines do you go with? I'd say that everyday, several people who have a fear of flying would get on a planes, and due to the fact that they know they cannot easily get off the plane, they would simply sit still and get on with it.

If we start allowing people to get off when they want, it'd cause untold delays in all airports.

This was surely just a freak accident, and will be put on the shoulders of the airline, who will probably be charged with misconduct, and fined or closed (worst case scenario).

To have this option would cost thousands extra per event as the take off slot would be gone and would need to be reallocated, it will also interupt the schedule. If you are afraid to fly don't, take a boat or car instead.

there are no rats on plains, as the the rain that falls mainly on them solves the problem (esp in spain)

I absolutely crap myself on flights. The fear starts once I'm sitting in my seat, but once the plane has pulled away from the terminal then I know I'm on the flight no matter what.....

The temptation to just get up and leave would be too much if I had the option.

Then again, if the plane had attempted one takeoff and failed and then wanted to try again (as allegedly happened here) then I'd defo try to get off the flight.

God that must be awful for the person who received the text, only to then look at the news and realize their friend/family member is dead.

If i want to get off a plane, then i would have a bloody good reason, so i think i should be allowed off. If i were on a plane that had to abort a take off i'd be vary tempted to get off, but even then i doubt i would.

I'd like to think that the pilot would choose not to take off if he was in any doubt about the safety of the aircraft.

Don't know what the rules are on this - I'm sure there are specifc by-laws which permit the captain to force someone to stay put. Otherwise it would be a form of detention or false imprisonment I guess.

I was on a flight once where we were taxiing to the runway (seatbelts on and all) and a woman went running up the aisle, with her hand luggage wheeled behind her.

Half an hour and a trip back to the terminal later, apparently she'd received some bad news and the pilot decided to let her off :rolleyes:

But seriously, I'd imagine they'd have to let you outta the plane if you wanted once it doesnt put the craft at risk (like when your in the air and such)...

If there is no safety reason preventing a crew from letting a passenger off, then they should let them off. The crew are civilians, they have no right to detain people.

That said, unless the passenger has a VERY good reason for wanting out, I see no problem with the airline charging the passenger for lost revenue and for compensating the other passengers. That would keep most people glued to their seats!

Depends what the "plain" is in question. Is it a plain of land: it's not going anywhere, just walk away. Nothing to see here. A plain-burger? No sauce. Less calories. You won't need to get off that. And there is no way I'm sharing my plain burger with the rest of ye.

No, they should not be allowed to get off. People should have to pass a test to assess if they are scared of flying or not. I used to love flying but a few incidents of passenger panic now have me a bit nervy. Granted one of the incidents there was a problem with the plane mid air and we had to divert :eek:, So a certain level of panic can be acceptable and to be honest most people were just delighted at the free booze and an extra days holiday :-). But there's no need for panic everytime a plane hits bad turbulence. In one incident a woman was screaming and crying and then afterwards I heard her apologising to everyone saying she thought we were all going to die.....for fooking turbulence!!

Another thing a really hate is people clapping when we land....seriously pathetic carry on.

Why would you want to...? If you smell, or indeed see, a herd of migrating wildebeest, by all means get off the plain ASAP, but don't really think a rat is cause for that? Surely the plain is big enough for the two of you?
