i reckon common sense needs to come into this at some stage. Ok, so some people can't legally direct traffic but there's nothing wrong with standing at either end of a streeet saying the roads not passable. If someone then drives past and ignores they can wait until the water goes to get their car back.

The whole point of a major emergency is that the emergency services are stretched beyond their normal limits, demand exceeds available resources. People always seem to think that when they call for help "someone" will come immediately. Sorry to break the news folks, they won't.

Problem seems to be as soon as you past the front line no one person seems to know what exactly the vols/army are to do/ meant to do and what resources they have and where.

The problem seems to be you know nothing about emergency planning, yet feel qualified to criticise.

Can you tell me with certain that soneone in Dublin city council or wherever last saturday knew what resources were out there from the voluntary/ army agencies in terms of personnel/ vehicles/ Dry suits etc and what they're capable of doing?

Have they ever done a full scale exercise for this type of incident?

    Biz,
Before going for the throat you need to appreciate that reserves and civil defence are exactly that, part timers. They have jobs, family and houses just as you do so its unfair to expect them too be able to drop everything and immediately spring into action. Besides that, if roads are blocked then how can Mr Civil defence even get to his station or operating centre? Hes stuck on the M50 just like everyone else.

As for DFB and Gardai, again theres numbers and training. Gardai do job A which is not clearing out floods or even getting people and cars out of them. DFB can do some of that but not near enough and theres still crime, fires and the primary stuff for them too take care of. As for the army, its an army, they are not trained for this and too be honest, it didnt warrant them being activated.

As I said before, it takes time to organise people and groups together then prioritise events and places. This flood while bad, wasnt a major emergency and didnt last long enough too become one. It was, when all is said and done, a flooded road.

The same flooded roads were unmanned for over 12 hours with continous car after car rolling into them and the emergency services going to rescue people from them. That's the sort of situation that could be avoided.

Jesus. How many times does it have to be said in this thread. Road full of water. Water full of abandoned cars. Do not drive into it. What is so complicated about that?

The floods that occured last weekend whilst causing road closures and extensive damage to individual houses was not to my knowledge an occasion where a large scale threat to life happened. Think back to the huge floods in the UK last year. As far as i am aware there were not thousands of houses in North county Dublin under 10 feet of water last weekend.

Yes, people got stuck in traffic jams due to bad drainage.
Yes, peoples homes were damaged and i have every sympathy with them.
Yes, the emergency services were under pressure.
However lets not talk this up as some biblical flood

However, if we have a real mass flooding on a large scale, we're screwed. Just thought i'd tell you that:D

Heard dfb are only using 1 pump from each station for floods, if it is a 1 pump station they arnt assigned to the job but kept as available and the driver is to stay at the radio available for fire calls
