Has anyone here owned or driven one? Particularly the one that Deerpark seem to have had for the past few years?

    It is a beauty.

Money not an object - you'd have to have it.

Thought it would be that one or the the Japanese 280 import.

The 6.9 M100 engine is a specialist bit of kit. I'd do a bit of checking regarding maintainence and parts. Some of the lads here can point you at a Merc mechanic or two.

I'm kind of thinking they might do some deal involving the Pagoda. The 450 is €13k on UK plates, it was first registered in April 1979. Does anyone reckon the 30-year rule might change before April next?

It was rumoured here by someone who said he knew someone who was in the know because he was around cabinet circles or something. Can't find it now. With the present economic downturn, surely the government have bigger fish to fry between now and April next?

Don't put it past them to sneak it though as everyones jaws are slackened as they see the rest of the budget.

Actually this was a Ferarri. The film was made by a crazy Frenchman Claude Lelouche, driving with vmax 140mph through Paris at 4 o'clock in the morning in 1976. He had a few friends at dangerous junctions to warn him if there was a car comming. Communication failed at one junction and almost desaster happened. He made it through the center of Paris in less then 10 minutes, which would be impossible today :-)))

It was actually a 6.9, but they dubbed the sound of a Ferrari into it afterwards.

I had planned on going in to see it and show the guy the Pagoda on Saturday, rang him in the morning and he said he'd call me back in a few minutes. Nothing since, i'm afraid.

Typical, and these guys run a garage?

Went out and drove it today. It's clearly not been used much recently. As you'd imagine, though, there's something very likeable about this car. He's going to give me a buzz back about having someone who knows their stuff have a look at the pagoda.

Muddy gear changes? No brakes? squishy tyres? or just a layer of dust?

    Mike.

It could definitely do with new tyres, suspension seemed a little slow to rise, brakes, engine & transmission seemed (to my uneducated senses) fine. I'd really have to have it thoroughly checked out though. Paint & interior are very good to excellent.

You can find 6.9's in the UK (and even America) for less than that and in better condition.

    i.e. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1979-MERCEDES-450-SEL-6-9-AUTO-SILVER_W0QQitemZ160270339399QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item160270339399&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A7&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1318

Anan1 - Deerpark Motors should be called (VERY) DEAR PARK(ED) MOTORS :P. , it might be a nice 6.9 but check out Mercedes Enthuiast magazine ( Easons or Reads shops ) for UK ones that'll give you an idea of it's real value, not Rip-off Republic prices. The W116 had a tendency to rust also.

Check this pan-european sales site as well -
then hit 'Mercedes' and '450' to get the 6.9

Alo Kavanagh Mercedes in Sandyford have a good stores ( Ken's the man there ), and Otto /GSF do routine parts

That 1979 MERCEDES 450 SEL 6.9 AUTO SILVER for £1,625 would be worth a punt. I've an 00 E430 now, saw them advertised here for €18k. UK price €7k + taxes of €3k here, eventually saw one in the Indo for €9k in Tipp. so lashed down a bought it. Buy as cheap as you can because at least you're not expecting a miracle, but you won't get a car full of Isopon, and you've a few €'s for repairs !

    Here's another 'Battlecruiser' on Carzone - http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/ click 'Chevrolet' , then 'Impala' ( 6.6L for €9k )

Hi Capri - Not sure whether you noticed, but Deerpark's car is asking €13,000 on UK plates. There are some nice looking cars on autoscout24, but all are LHD. Impalas are out, LHD and no brakes.

Prob. paid €3k for it over there, drove it back here and parked it until he makes €10 on it ????

    For €13k you could have a W220 2000 S500 LWB from CityWest cars - http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mercedes-Benz/S-500/LWB-nct/230971/

    or a W140 93 S600L V12 for €7.5k http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mercedes-Benz/S-600/AMAZING-CAR/1104742/

I'd love to have the time/ money to take care of a 450 SEL 6.9, but a daily driver is more important to me than something that might fall apart through lack of driving ?

Bloody hell. Both have a V8 petrol engine. That's a good thing. But it's about the only thing those two cars have in common.
