I cycle Mullaganish pass quiet often, (not up to the mast though,) but the front gate is open alot of the time. I dont think there is much to stop you strolling up to the top from the Ballyvourny side. It seems to me that they are building a brand new road on the millstreet side, and construction has being ongoing on some scale since summer 2007.

Sweet, I live less than a mile from the spur hill mast and have a perfect los (have ibb from there too) Does DTT need los?. This will be a great excuse to get a new aeriel on the roof too (Current one is falling apart)

Yes it does. Its still just UHF. The biggest difference from analogue is you will either receive it or you won't. No in-between.

my signal from spur hill is shabby.. TG4 is unwatchable, sometime i cant even receive it.. but recently it has been good (not great) i dunno if this has something to with the weather.
I'm using a 10 element c/d contract antenna, i wonder if i upgrade to a 14 or 18 element yagi would it make a big difference.. but then again, those 18 elements are about 1.6m long.

i'm worried that i wont receive any digital signal at all

4 x 18 elements will work a treat. Not so big when on the roof.

BTW, the current tower was installed around 1962. Photos attached...hopefully.
Bit of broadcasting history there if you could get your hands on that sign!!

people down the road have a big one .. but in the past few years it has begun to sag at both ends

I wonder actually are they going to use the new mast at spur hill. They installed a smaller secondary mast at the same site recently which as yet dosen't appear to have any transmitters mounted on it, if they do use that I may not get los due to tree cover.. I know it would service most of the city perfectly though. Anyone have any idea?

Would this be suitable for DTT?.
    Can you recommend any online?.

I gave up trying to find one online.. you buy the antenna, then you have to get the correct lashing / bracket which is sold seperately..
Personally i am just gonna get a guy to install a new antenna for me and let him sort it all out

That mast at Mullaganish doesnt look too secure (security wise).. can anyone one just walk up to it.

I dont see any fence other than a bit of tatty barb wire

It's actually quite secure. That photo was taken down the side of the mountain, the tatty sheep wire is a good distance from the mast. The photo is a bit deceiving, the mast is contained within a compound.

If the weather is good i might take a spin down that way on Tue. or Wed. next week

(thats a a BIG if, and a BIG might)

the new smaller mast at Spur Hill is used for DAB, and the FM radios was transferred over to it too.

All mention of Spur Hill is gone too. Could they be finished there? And just waiting now to turn it on.

Wok is starting on Truskmore in the next 6 weeks - and YES it is MPEG 4, so if you're shopping in Currys or Dixons, make sure that the TV has an MPEG 4 tuners and not the 2 or 3 ones. eh you might have to explain the difference to the numptys in the shop !!!

There never was an MPEG3 deployed.

    No DTT yet on Woodcock.

Some of the sites being listed as getting survey work can't realistically be for DTT any time soon - Magheraroarty (must serve about 500 people, max) for instance!

Kippure is also down for surveys, my local TX although I was (just about) able to pull the RTE mux off 3R during the current trial, this is the one I'd be hoping for.

Spur Hill anyway I'm hoping for. (No official info though).

They've said MPEG4 tests will commence on August 4th (without referring to any transmitter site I think?)

it's one week till august 4th..
    Thats when mpeg4 'trials' begin..
I'm making the presumption that the 'trials' will be from all upgraded transmitters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Rabbit's Ears

MPEG 4 (64 QAM) test transmission will only be from existing DTT sites.

It will be more like Months not weeks before DTT MPEG4 starts at sites where there has not already been trials.

Apparently, a new transmitter mast is being built on the Dungarvan site and it will be a few weeks before test transmissions even begin but also the 4 PSB should be broadcasting from the Dungarvan transmitter from November onwards..

TV3 will finally be broadcasting from Dungarvan tx. Such joy.

There is a new channel line up this am from MT leinster on different channels. The trial ending banners are gone. I am presuming this is an MPEG4 feed.
