    Hi,

Can anyone tell me why I get completely different download speed results from speedtest.net and irishisptest.ie.
The speedtest.net is coming up with just over 9Mb/s but irishisptest.ie only clocks in at about 3.5Mb/s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

DJD, speedtest sites are quite unreliable for a bunch of reasons. Base your connection on what you can usually download at, not on what speedtest sites tell you :)

Irishisptest will show 11.8mb/s for me.
    Speedtest will show 19.9mb/s.

I dont think Irishisptest is geared for anything about 12mb.

2mg increased to 6mg, still paying only €25 a month, and appears all restrictions on torrents have been lifted.

    unbelieveable increases!!

UPC, I love you for now!!:pac:

phoned them twice premium support number and normal number.

Got fobbed off a bit....everyone said that it would take a 1 or 2 to come through for me.

I guess I just gotta wait and hoot them out of it next week.

Had the same problem with a 3com router, plug your laptop straight into the NTL modem and you'll get the full speed.

Im having the exact same problem with my netgear router. does any one know of a router that will give the full 20Mb over wifi

Hi Lads (and ladies if theres any in the networking section ... doubt it though)

Just wanted to give you info on my experience with the NTL upgrade.

I was on the 6mb connection and decided to call regular NTL support number on Thursday morning (july 3rd). I spoke to a woman who didn't know what she was talking about because she had to ask someone else, but she was nice and told me I had to fill in the form online it my line would be upgraded automatically.

I filled in the form and waited a few hours and there was no change to my speed, even after rebooting the modem a few times.

So I called NTL premium support about 5 times and kept getting the answer machine. I called them again the next morning at about 11am and got through to a guy. I was nice and friendly to him and asked him how his day was going and if he was busy, which he replied not too busy. I then said I was calling 'about the speed upgrades and was wondering if you would be able to help me get connected?' he said 'what is your account number and I'll have a look' I gave him my account number and about 30 seconds later he said yes thats fine I'll switch you over now and it should take effect in about 5 mins. I said thanks thats great you've made my week and that was that.

A wee while later I did a speed test and it was running just under 19Mbps, I didnt' even have to power cycle my modem.

It could be I happened to live in the right area (Portmarnock, Dublin) or it could be a got the right guy on the right day/

I hope that helps some of you if you have any questions just ask.

And here's me 1 month into a 12 month contract with poxy 1meg Ripwave for 25.99 a month!!

to say I feel slightly jealous and totally ripped off would be something of an understatement

Say it is not meeting the advertised speeds. Try and get rid of that poxy crap. :)

Filled in the form on Wednesday or Thursday evening, speed was increased this morning :D

I originally filled in the form to apply for 12mb. Nothing had happened by Thursday so I phoned UPC and they had no record of my application. Filled in the form again but this time because of the latest upgrades decided 10mb would be enough for me. Had it this morning.

Don't bother with email, go straight to their freephone number. There's been a few problems in the Dublin 8 area lately - things seem to be working OK now.

    Cheers. In dublin 1 myself.
I'll give them a call on Monday. Hopefully they can do something...(not holding my breath though)

Got the speed upgrade there. Fair play to them, two bumps in a few months! I'm warming towards them now!

My question is I've noticed that movies files etc download quicker but web pages can still take a few seconds to loads (eg the main page of Boards). It's nothing major but I thought with a 10mb connection nearly web page would instant. I'm using FF 3. Any advice?

Which dns servers are you using?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 256 ✭✭Cow Moolester

After reading illicit007's post I rang them up and used the line that he used and was upgraded immediately!

Silvine: I noticed the same when upgrading from 2mb to 12mb and 12mb to 20mb. I'm assuming its just the time needed for your browser to process all the information.
