I haven't personally felt the recession, BUT, the sales in work have gone waaaaaaay down in the last few weeks, which is a bit of a worry as the amount of people passing through has actually increased.

A cold beer, obviously - 'cos a warm beer is just nasty and uncalled for even in times of economic downturn and/or refridgeration issues

What work? Is it seasonal? Is there a sale coming up that people are just coming in to browse now and buy later?

No, I work in the aiport, so we have a high volume of potential customers who won't really get the opportunity to buy at a later date.

isn't that normal for a wet summer with the kids off from school and the foreign holidays starting ?

See? Holidays and recession don't mix.
    It's all nonsense.

Might it be down to the continuing strength of the Euro and ever declining dollar/sterling? i.e. whatever you're selling it's probably a way cheaper where people are going (and only getting cheaper!)

The banks who have loaned money to everyone who could sign an "x" on a page, are now a bit miffed that,in some cases, "x" stands for the only chromosome the signee has, and cant pay the loan back cos they are back in prison now, so the banks have sensibly decided to up interest rates, so everyone who can be screwed, will be screwed, and not giving anyone any money for a while. Some of these banks, may only make 1.6 billion profit this year and not 1.8 like they forcast.

The media too.. who love disaster, and I am really learning to hate. Recession mad they are. I think I am going to stop listening to the news. It used to be just 3 lines about who was shot in norther ireland, now its 10 mins on the recession, and another 10 on the HSE. More miserable than the weather.

spot on with all of this.

Unemployment rose 19,000 in one month alone in June. Thats 1,000 people losing their jobs every single working day. The highest monthly increase on record. :( Its going to cost 500,000,000 euros to pay their dole. Unemployment is now 5.7% and is expected to break 7% by the end of the year.

F**k the media and all their hype! They don't call it programming for nothing. Anybody looking to improve their sense of well being would do well to call sky and cancel their subscription.

Thats what I want them to do. But we all know the Unions would destroy the country before letting that happen. There should be an immediate pay freeze in the public sector at the very least.

    Why is that exactly??

I'd much rather see them stop handing out free money to ****ing wasters and druggies and layabout parents and their kids to be honest.

And introduce death penalty... we're paying for murderers to be kept in prison when we should be just shooting them.

Think about the cost of one bullet and a pauper's burial compared to 8 - 20 years of food and accomodation....

Absolutely, felt the gloom of recession on Thursday when economist after miserable economist made the pouring rain seem inviting. They should all be renamed Marvin the Economist.:D

But I refused to talk myself into recession. Meanwhile last Sunday a Ben and Jerry van was doing roaring trade outside the local Smyths toy store and Woodies shops packed with people.

But while we are on it, the numbers are bad, especially for those affected. Even so it's been a very long time since we were even near these numbers, 1998 in fact. That was in the middle of the dot com madness and it was at about 6% or so. So bad as it "seems" to be, Biffo is not too far off the truth. Realism and coming out of denial is fine but doesn't misery love company.

A nice CSO report on it.
