Who cares if you call it the point, or the 02 arena, it will always be a total ****ing ****ehouse. Every gig there bar the Doors of the 20th century and Kanye West was spoiled by tossers crowding, **** sound, **** visibility, ridiculous heat and that wont stop because they added a speaker and a few bleecher seats. Its a ****ing ****hole man.

Is that the way he told it last time? It's not in the original anyway!

That's a different company. I don't even think they've got the full planning permission for it yet.

They have full PP alright. Its suppose to be under construction now but no one seems to know if it is. Its part of the same development.

The Point Village is a different project to the Point Depot/O2 Venue.

I wasn't sure about the tower. I remember there were issues over the design, so I just assumed with Ireland being the way it is, it'd be lost in bureaucratic limbo for a few years.

It's going to be completely different to the way it was before. This time around they've actually put thought into it.

No it wasn't Bono he was talking about... why would he be explaining what the Point was to Bono who has been there many times. That was the only thing I remember Vedder saying to the crowd that night.

I will always call it The Point.

I think I am too old for any 13000 capacity venue
The ambassador, olympia, vicar st. et al are where its at for us oldies.

eddie: "have we anyone here from donegal
    people cheer
eddie: "they are all here, all 3 of them"

    or something along those lines

It was Bono. Its a joke. He basically says something along the lines of "and he was rambling on about this that and the other" and he asked "Whats the Point"....leading to something liek "the Point is an awesome venue in Dublin"

I've got one of the gigs on cd and he's not talking to Bono when he tell that story, but I wouldn't be surprised if he popped Bono in to jazz it up a little :D

just listened to the speils again, vedder june 2000

"talking about a farmer his son and a horse, one day the horse ran away and joined up with the wild horses, so now just him and the son ploughing the fields and its going slow and the neighbours feel sorry for the farmer now that his horse ran away and the man said you know whatever, then the horse comes back with all the wild horses and now the farmer has six horses. then the son is training one of the horses and falls off and breaks his leg up to his hip and the neighbours think that is really bad luck but the farmer says whatever, then a war breaks out and all the neighbours sons have to go except the son who has broken his leg"

at this part of the story a friend asks me "what the point" and i said "oh its this really great place to play in Dublin"

Doesnt really mater what its called so long as they've done something about the crap sound in the place

I really can't see Dublin people calling it anything other than the point... Out in Coolock we still refer to Liz Delaney's as 'The Blacker' even though it must be over 20 years since it was called the Black Sheep.

Haha I was going to bring this up to show that people usually just ignore new names. Can't imagine anyone using the correct name. It's odd anyway because the apartments etc next to it are "Point Village".

I'll call it the O2. I'll still use Meteor as my provider.

I thought it was going to be called "The O2 Arena" which sounds much better in my opinion.

    +1 Indeed it is..

I never stopped calling it the Point Depot. It's an edgy name, reminds me of the Commitments era for some reason...

I just realised I got an o2 phone and unlocked it to use meteor but I get dibs on tickets. Woo!

The Tesco's tickets will prob just let people get a piggyback to people watching concerts in the O2.

(This will be funny to about 1 person.)

Ha ha... Mobile phone operator joke :P

It'll always be the point depot to me.... Bloody corporate sponsorship of stadiums and arenas is ridiculous... What next 'Lyons Tea Park' (Croke Park) !!!

Does it really mater what it is called? We are getting a brilliant venue for Dublin and if I have to call it the O2, so what! People are so stubborn in this town. For a few million I would rename myself! You will be calling it the O2 soon enough so start practising! Have a go; O2, O2, O2, see its not that hard!

Who cares? It just re-emphasises how soulless an environment the point always was and always will be. Can't have any kind of intimacy whatsoever for a concert by feckin packing in 13000 screaming people into an overheated indoor venue.
Sufjan Stevens in a pub in Melbourne. Now that was a gig. Frank Black in Vicar st. The Foos in D'Olympia..... The Point has always been a hole.
Wow. My ability to re-post the exact same thing time after time in the same thread borders on the super-human

I hate the point as a venue, it always felt too remote and impersonal

    The Ambassador > everything

    It'll always be 'The Point'!

It's like 'Cineworld' on Parnell Square, I still call it 'UGC'.

    What about 2006?

Sorry dude, I can't lay my hands on the 2nd CD from that night which is where I think he tells it. If it turns up in the next day or two I'll let you know.

    What about 2006?

"In Seattle, i was talking with the singer of an irish band, and and, eh, and eh,and eh(:pac:), he was saying things about how when their band makes records that its like a horse, they're breeding a horse. I was there ' ok', and then he said 'we not only breed the horse, we want it to not just be in the race but we want it to win', and eh, then he said he didnt want rock and roll to become a niche. And i was like ' but whats the point?'....."Oh Eddie, the point's a great fuckin place to play in Dublin"

Edit- not sure hoe its gonna work with the new name
'but whats O2?'.... ' a colorless, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas!' (thanks wiki)

also think its gay with the whole preferential treatment bollocks
