Porn & Rape

I was watching Penn and Teller - Bullshit last night and they had an episode about porn. They had the usual thing- people for porn and people against porn (how you could be against it is beyond me - but whatever). Anyway, Penn and Teller had done research - and discovered an interesting correlation between porn and rape:

The states in America with the most internet access had the lowest counts of rape
The states that had the least internet access had the highest counts of rape.

Admittedly they agreed that it could be just a coincidence and there might be no connection whatsoever.

But, does anyone else think that there could be a connection between the 2?

    ...

A link between not raping someone cos of pr0n on the web?

    *phew*

With the proliferation of mobile broadband, it will be gone altogether by 2011. :D

Seriously though I'd say there is a correlation there. I look at nakedy wimmins on t'internet and I've never been convicted of rape. I know that's only anecdotal evidence but still.

    I doubt it

well maybe the states with more internet access were more well off, better social conditions and so less crime etc and less rape

Thing is porn has being around long before internet ,just that it is everywere ,easy and more acessible now .Perhaps you also would have to see the statistics pre internet decades to see if the % is higher than it is now .

I didnt know Penn + Teller did research into such hard-hitting material. I thought they did magic and ****.

Maybe having access to porn relieves the violent sexual urge.

    Maybe it encourages it.

    Who knows?

I think the connection is negligible

    Begone with your logical reasoning.

If we get enough support for this theory we could get free porn on the telly as a crime cutting measure. Talk to your local TD.

I'm sure proponents of pornography would love to think so, but areas with lower rates of internet access indicate areas of social disadvantage, where there is a much higher instance of all sorts of violence, so no, I wouldn’t be buying that bullsh!t.

I think this myth is plausible.

I've been trying to find statistics myself - like which states have the most internet access but I am having no luck whatsoever.

I studied this in Psychology last year...

Irish men seem to make the repeated mistake between Porn and Erotica. Porn more times than not, depict scenes of rape and degradation. The 'porn' (I'm assuming you're all talking about) is soft core and is actually more erotic than degrading (I hope).

Anyway.. in the case of hard porn (gang rapes and what not) if a person is exposed to them again and again over a long period of time they run the risk of becoming desensitised. Ted Bundy for example, admitted that he always sought out harder porn and more brutal attacks. He then carried out these acts on his victims. It had become the norm after a period of exposure and desensitisation.

Anyhooo... I don't think men watching erotic sex scenes makes them a potential rapist, not at all. Rape scenes and hard porn on the otherhand have a different target audience.

Lets define what you all accept as 'porn' on this thread before I type anymore.... (fingers hurt:o)

Actually its more interesting to read how rape rates fell, as the internet was first rolled out across the US, state by state.

This phenomenon has been around a while.

I haven't raped anyone yet, and I have an internet, now where did I leave it...

There are different 'levels' of pr0n?

It's all men & women bumping uglies to me, the odd animal thrown in for good measure.

Seriously, google "porn" and you won't get soft core, hard core and niches are the norm.

The idea is these fantasies can be satisfied online with a quick knuckle shuffle, rather than going out and raping someone.

    Hence the theory.

    Hahaha fair enough..! :D

Yeah - I'm no expert on the matter but in the lectures we looked at how hard porn was made and listened to interviews from the female 'actresses'. Most of the hard porn stuff were gang rapes and vile, sadistic and degrading sh!t!

Motosam: Sorry I just seen your post there. I don't know tbh, I never googled porn! I don't know a whole lot about it except for the case studies I did.

ted bundy went around doing interviews from prison saying porn made him rape and kill a bunch of women. but then theres the argument that he was just making excuses, but the counter argument that he was on death row anyway, so blaming porn wasn't going to help him.
plenty of people watch porn and dont rape.

( i did know a guy who did nothin But watch porn, and he had this weird power thing with women, even outside the bedroom. i think he really saw women as nothing but sex objects, not just to the regular 'you're a pig' level, but weirder, i can't explain properly..)

That's not Penn & Teller research. I read the original university paper.

It's true. The more access people have to pornography, the less sexual assault there is.

    It makes sense really...

If people wanted erotica/soft porn they would watch wimmins tennis and MTV. If people go a-googling for porn they are more than likely looking for harder shtuff. That doesn't always mean rape scenes though. Degrading maybe but then standing there in front of your laptop furiously beating your meat with your cacks around your ankles hoping you can finish before your mam gets back from the shops isn't exactly glamorous for you either. :pac:

Also don't use an obvious nutcase like Ted Bundy to make a point about people in general.

Don't click on the results or anything (I dont think you'd like it :D) but throw it into google there, see what the first 10 results are, and give us you're impression :D

I predict "big boobs" will be a minor feature, while "hardcore" is a more likely word to appear.

    100% pure bull****.

Porn does not "more times than not" depict scenes of rape and degradation.

Yes, there is a type of porn which shows aggressive acts like rape and degradation, but it is absolutely in the minority, less than 1% of porn.

Porn is something whose purpose is to arouse. It has nothing to do with rape or child molesting or whatever other nonsense you think it might be.

Exactly, he had been desensitised by constant exposure to hard
core (probably) rape scenes and domination scenes.

I don't know what exactly you consider hard or soft but the stuff we had to read about was awful - I mean bloody terrifying!

So I'm not saying, under any circumstances that ANY of you are potential rapists for liking porn. I think that's an unfair generalisation. But if any of you like to watch scenes in which women are beaten (to the extent that she's clearly not enjoying it) and tortured and are exposed to it for a long period of time, then you could very well begin to accept it as normal.

Again... lads, you're all exempt from this bracket as it appears to be soft porn or erotica that yer referring to! :D

Easy on the old aggression there Sir.

What about the hundreds of millions of men who look at hardcore porn?

I'm sorry, but one example of someone who looked at porn and killed people doesn't cut it with me. Using your logic, I could connect every single thing in the world to an act of murder.

    Honestly, you're talking ****e.

I apologise if I'm being a bit aggressive, but the backwards Irish attitude to porn really annoys me. There is nothing wrong with nudity, sex and being aroused. Yes, the odd mentaller might see a violent hollywood movie or read a violent book or watch some violent porn and get some ideas in his head, but he is MENTALLY ILL.
