In work reading this and it brought on a massive sugar craving! So when I was in the shop I bought a wham bar and a couple of refresher lollies for the bargain price of 30p

They definitely don't taste as nice as they used to :(

There was also Drumsticks that went with Refreshers, they were on a small stick but not really suitable if you have any loose teeth. :)

    Postman pat chews mother****er!

Ahhhh Postman Pats were the job!!! :pac:
For me though was 10p crisps (tough choice between super hoopers, banshee bones or meanies) and a macaroon bar.
Tbh usually had 50p or a pound though so there'd usually have been a brunch and a bag of white bonbons and a few strawberry whips thrown in too. Then back to my friends house to watch The Fresh Prince on Sky all day :D

Probably 2 woppa bars (the cola ones @ 5p each), 2 refresher sweets (@ 2p each) and six penny sweets (possibly 2 eggs, 2 fizzy cola bottles and 2 bananas).

Or my old trick of getting say 18p worth of sweets, bringing it to the counter, when they say 18p please just say oh sorry, don't bother with the change, ill just grab 2 more sweets on the way out. I'D GRAB AROUND 5!!!!!!! Worked for years.

Cola flavoured Woppa bar would be number 1 on the list. Was never a fan of the spearmint ones though.

Cola frosties, postman pat and fruit salad sweets, Wheelies and Chickadees would all come into consideration too.

    I fuckin LOVE Chickadees.

Macaroon bars! I loved them! Only a few years ago I could get them for 10p each :(

2 x tenpenny bag of sweets in the brown bags.

Either that or save for one of those watches that ran on water. Wonder how many remember these!

The dip daps I quite liked as well.

How cool would it have been if Samuel L. Jackson said that in Pulp Fiction?

The whistle pops were so cool, with the little red stick to make the tune, and when you finished the pop I would put the stick in someones ear.

Wheelies were so cool, Monster Munch were better though.

I remember there was a World Cup chewing gum with the mascot for worldcup in the packet, wow, that was in 1986 I think and 10p too, ****in' bargain.

sometimes my friends and I would club together our 20p's and ask the girl in the shop for 100 penny sweets or more just to see the dirty look she'd give us ha ha

the ould wan in our local shop didnt have bags, she used to roll the parish newsletter up into a cone and give us our penny sweets in that... you could only get about ten sweets into each cone so if you wanted more you'd be wandering around with loads of copies of the parish newsletter sticking out of your pockets

it really depended. if it was the summer I would get a Mr. Freeze (and hope to get one of the special numbers for a free one) then one or two of those bubble gums with the 'tattoos in them and the rest in penny sweets.

if it was the winter I would get a load of teeth-disolving bars like Dan, Wham, freshers, blackjack etc...

god dammit now I'm really nostalgic. I wish I was back in those times! best years of my life were those summers when we would leave our 'base' for a little while to get supplies (see above) and then return while on the lookout for the enemy (little knackers)

i used to do this too we dug our base out and put branches over it to make it look lke it was not there liitle knackers used to try and distroy it brings back memories

used to get a bag of burger bites, a giant cola bottle for 5p and a wham or sometimes chicatees or refreshers or mr freeze as well

I live just across the road from the Ballest pit in Skerries which was a haven for base building. every summer we would construct our base in some ditch by bashing down a 'door' and then we would claim our parts in the base itself. man those were the days

I got fifty penny sweets twice in my life and both times the shopkeeper nearly had a heart attack :D With 20p it varied. I usually got those bars like cola bars, black jacks and fruit salads, although I can remember the days when I got Wappos!

I completely forgot those ever existed. they were amazing! iirc they have massive sugar crystals in them and stuck to your teeth/roof of your mouth like no other bar in existence, but you still loved them.

anyone else feel this belongs more in All Things Retro?
