    Thanks. :) It's a new PB too.

It nearly killed Mike to give me that ton. :D

But... but... it was only my second competition* in B! :D

Thanks, I was pretty happy with it. Hopefully I'll continue to improve when the nationals roll around.

    * Since I started shooting again.

Can't retrospectively send you to Munich though. :p

:) Wouldn't have been enough anyway. Cutoff for Munich was 589.

I know, I meant if you improvd again in BRC next time.

Oh right. Well, if I improve again in BRC at the nationals then I reckon I'll be happy anyway.

If you keep this up though, you'll go International next season.
And remember, 585 is only eight points off the Irish International record for 50m...

My current goal is pretty much: "Go to an international competition and don't make a complete tit of yourself".

Cool. Time to start scraping more points from wherever I can find them.

    Conor, what ammo you using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

    DURC-sponsored Match EPS I believe.

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭IRLConor

Yep, Eley Match EPS (old box, not the new boxed Eley Match).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 682 ✭✭✭demonloop

I've had good results with that Match EPS as well.

If your scores are creeping up there, as yours are, you might want to consider the next jump up to Tenex, batch tested to your rifle.

Its quite an outlay financially but will shave a few points of a card.

The record could soon be within reach!

Even mentally, knowing the ammo you're using is the best, is worth a point or two IMO

Actually Conor, at 585, demonloop has a valid point. Batch testing would be a good idea for you at this point.

Kinda hard to buy a batch of Tenex when there's only 100 rounds on my license. :(

At the moment, I'm confident that the ammo is better than I am. Indoors, I can usually call the placement of the shot quite accurately. Outdoors, there's always the chance that I haven't read the conditions correctly so I'm not quite there yet.

I haven't had any fliers with the Match EPS, the only issue I've had with them has been that a few of them have failed to go off.

    That can be fixed :D

Aye, and if you were shooting in the 570s I'd say don't bother, but that's twice you've been in the 580s so far and if it's where you're shooting, then doing the batch-test thing will bring you another few points without any training being required. The only thing to worry about would be that you don't overthink it - send off barrel, buy 10,000 rounds, then forget completely about it until you've shot them all. Don't go off with this mucking about with weighing bullets and measuring rims and all that claptrap. Batch testing is the 90% item there.

Batch testing, well yes you get less fliers, but the point of it isn't flier reduction, it's shrinking the group size a little bit more.
It's not mandatory - look at Michelle's performance last august in Bisley, and that was without batch tested ammo - but it is worth doing when you reach a high enough standard and you're hitting the point now.

I had two failures on my last card yesterday as well. As usual, I'm in the process of prodding various people for possible chances to try other ammo, including R50, and you'll be welcome to a box or two to try if I get my mitts on any.

I'm surprised at the failure rate TBH.

    I'll definitely think about it.

Thats funny, I've never had a round fail to go bang, and thats in a good few years shooting smallbore and previously, fullbore.

I've been using Match EPS for about 2/3 years and never had one fail.

    Is X buying seconds? :D

Yes, but in the last two matches. If your next score is 560-odd, disregard the above ;)

I've had one or two do odd things, and Tenex at that (had a round keyhole through an indoor 25yd target once), and we've seen very odd things happen with ammo in the club over the years (including a batch of exploding ammunition according to the minute books!) but it's odd enough to make me wonder - Conor have you checked your firing pin and it's spring? Were these total duds or did they fire when you re-cocked and tried again?
    Is X buying seconds? :D
Oi you, quit that kind of thing, it's technically libellous!

I've had 4 Match EPS fail to ignite on the first strike of the firing pin*. 3 of those went off when rotated and struck again. The other was during a match and didn't want to extract (which is sometimes a problem with the club KK200 I'm using) but when extracted I set it aside and continued the match. When I got back to the range I destroyed it but the primer looked like it had partially burned. Scary stuff.

*Cheap mode* You can get seconds? :D

    * And 1 Lapua Master, years ago. As an RO in DURC I've seen maybe 5-10 other rounds of various other brands fail to go off the first time.

On at least one I've re-cocked and fired without rotating the round. When I decided to rotate the round the strike mark looked deeper than the rim. I'll save the brass the next time, if you're curious.

No harm intended, and there are certainly no such things as seconds in any case.

I buy mine from the official Irish importer too so I hope not anyway!! :D

Money saved buying cheap ammo <<< Money wasted by using cheap ammo while trying to get to international level :D
