 I say 'ye' all the time, how else do you distinguish the singular you from the plural you. I put it into texts, emails, everything.

I am from Tipperary... so not just the West.

How may people still use 'well' for hello, how are you, is life good & numerous other similar things:).
You are walking down the street, pass someone you know... and you hear 'well', 'well' and that is it..

Plural of you is you ffs.
I say ye the whole time, but if ye want to be correct about it ye should say you.

"You guys" sounds a bit gay tbh.

Again.. If you don't provide evidence of your argument how are we supposed to then take your side?

We have provided evidence that the word ye can be used as the plural of you.. I understand your argument that you is ALSO the plural of you... But you cannot try and totally rule out ye... Both versions are perfectly acceptable IMO.

BUT as I said I do have a problem with "you's" or "you-es" - As these are incorrect! ;)

I was on a course in Galway last year, when I suddenly realised that people were saying "ye", instead of "you".
The first time I thought I misheard. The second time I thought it was a mistake. The 200th time, I wanted to punch the people saying it.

Is this just a Galway-Cork thing? Why the hell can't people just say "you"?

"Ye can all go home for the weekend and"?
    ...
    "Pardon"?

Seriously though, same single syllable, why try to be "cool" about it?

    <boards.ie>
    Ye're Ma!
    I think ye're talking crap!
    </boards.ie>

We say it in Laois too, it's plural for you and stems from the Gaelic grammer system. Its not about being cool.

I always thought, that was pronounced "Now yerr talking". Didn't know it was supposed signify the plural.

That's how I tend to pronounce you're, be it singular or plural.

Non-sense hahaha...Dont try to disprove something unless you made sure it doesnt exist.. ANYWHERE...

Incase you missed my link... Here... Ye
yes all behold the Bible that is wiki... it's never wrong about anything is it:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

but did you actually read the article??
Ye was originally used only for the nominative case (as the subject), and only for the second person plural. Later, ye was used as a subject or an object, either singular or plural, which is the way that you is used today.
    note the last 9 words.

tbh is there anything more anal than a grammar debate??????????

Probably not but it is a lot better than doing work on a Friday tbh...

Did you also read my previous post...

Hence and therefore... It is my conclusion that BOTH ye and you are acceptable as plural...
Again - Both are correct - You's and you-es are knacker talk!... thats my 2 senses

you're basically saying then that "ye" is acceptable cos lots of people say it then?

and you're also saying that everyone who lives in the north is a knacker cos "yous" is the norm for the plural of "you" there

Were several people co-boning this alleged Galwegian, or was she so drunk she was seeing double? Or is your leabability so mighty that she referred to you in the plural out of respect?

    We need to be told.

    :D
    I'll go for option b!!

I get the "Ye" thing in Limerick all the time. Also "Y'all" from Texans drives me nuts.

    No I never said that...

I provided evidence, and others did also about where the word ye came from and that it is acceptable...
What I said was that nobody can provide proper evidence that the words yous or you-es are plural of you... as they aren't.

I didn't generalize and say that the people are knackers i said that the words are knacker talk, slang if you prefer the term.

Being a norm for a word is not enough... if that was the case then slang words are more correct than the actual words... which is not the case...

    An anus, in fairness.

I like "ye". It fills a gap in British English and reduces the possiblity of misunderstanding.

"You" - proper English, though easily confused with singular form
"Ye" - South and west of Ireland
"Yous" - North and east of Ireland
    "Yiz" - Scumbag talk
"Yizzer" - Anyone using this word should be shot in the face

Everyone seems to be missing the fact that 'Ye' has a history, origin, and correct meaning... it is not limited to the south and west of ireland... although that is arguably where it is used most...

Both words for plural of you... You and Ye are totally and undeniably correct to use.

Those other words mentioned have no meaning outside of being slang words nomatter how common in use they are.. they are still only slang.
