Anybody any experience taking a lot of $$ to vegas?

K, so wsop is around the corner, going in 2 weeks. Want to know if theres gonna be questions asked when i arrive in US Customs with a **** load of $$. I know u can take $10k without any problems, but will there be a problem is you are taking more than that ???

There's a certain amount you can travel with without needing to declare, and it may well be 10K. That's for internal flights mind you. It's not like Customs can charge you on it mind. Would be kinda harsh having to pay VAT on bringing money across state lines.

Don't mention the WSOP on any paperwork going in either. Poor Joe Hachem...he'd been warned and all but he just wouldn't listen...

He listed himself as a Poker Pro when he came into the country instead of Tourist. When he won the WSOP he got hit for income taxaments.

Indeed it is. However, anyone doing this should be aware that the credit card company (or your bank) will not cover money you have loaded onto your card in the event of theft/fraud. They will only cover the money they loan you on the card.

There aren't charges (depending on your card) when your account is positive on your credit card, except machine charges.

you can take more then 10k but have to declare the excess, generally transferring monies to the main cage of a major casino is the recommended best option

if you take more the 10k they can take the excess off you. If you declare it I dont think there is a problem, but than they'll ask you what the money is for and if you say poker, you wont get in.

As Nicky says, send it direct to a cage at your hotel and withdraw it from there.

my brother took close to $40k into the States (California) late last year to buy a classic car, declared it and had no problems whatsoever. Might be a good reson to give them as to why you have so much cash with you..

There was a thread on here a about 3 weeks ago about goin to vegas and giving advise, u know the one about no riding the hookers and doin coke!!

but there was i thing in it that you can ring up one of the casino's and just get a wire transfer to them and they will hold all your money in there cage for the duration, dont know if they'll do the same when your heading back though

have a search should be only a couple of pages down

When you are coming back, you can't bring anymore than €10k without declaring it either legally. Not sure if you are flying into UK as first point of EU entry though. Not many people think about it from that end though.

Make sure you have your story straight re your profession etc, if you say you are a poker player they wont let you over as technically you will need a working visa. But dont say you are a student on holiday and then have thousands of $ on you or they will know your lying and just refuse you.

Fly through Dublin if your worried about it, at least then you do immigration here and if they boot you you wont be faced with two fruitless plane rides.

Dont imagine it never happens either a few people I know have been refused access. Wiring to the casino is the best option really.

Best thing I found was contacting your Casino Stevie and dropping it there and withdrawing on arrivial, valid point tho is coming back with sh*t load, provided you dont get broke in the donkaments

Other than that credit card and get your bank to set your max limit as unlimited withdrawel and see what kind of deal they will do with withdrawl charges...they will do a deal for ya!

If you have a ton of cash you can just say you are going to Vegas to gamble like a madman and not mention poker at all, I cant imagine they will find a problem with that, thats what Vegas is for after all

This was my experience recently, quoting a mate in the U.S. (below):

I presume everyone knows that there's a lot of juice involved drawing cash from a credit card, not to mention the foreign exchange fiddle if your card is not native.

1. I spoke again to the (casino/hotel) and the woman explained in more detail how the "front money" works this time. Something she did not do the last time I spoke with her. The first time I thought you could just draw cash against it. Turns out you can only draw credit against it. So you couldn't get the cash you would need. I asked what works to just walk up and get cash. She said travelers checks.

So I went to my bank. They don't sell them anymore, as apparently most banks don't these days. The lady there suggested a travel debit card, which the banks use to replace travelers checks.

So, I called the casino and they said they had ATMs all over the place to get cash using credit and debit cards. Plus you can take the card to a commercial bank and get money against it.

2. I'm getting stymied at every turn here. The bank lady called yesterday and upon further reading of the rules on the travel debit cards, there are restrictions on how much you can get in cash advances that would make it pointless to send you one of those. She did think that they could wire money to a local Western Union office in Las Vegas that you could then pick up. I suspect that might be an expensive way to do it. But I'll have her check further on that.

I was thinking that as a last resort I could overnight enough cash to get you into the tournament via FedEx or UPS and then just bring the rest. It's hard to believe it's so hard to move some cash into Vegas to gamble on.

I have never got charged except the ATM charges for withdrawing money I had loaded onto my credit card. BOI Visa btw. I think AIB had a charge on theirs a few years back at least, but I have used my BOI all over the place and never got charged.

don't say you are a professional poker player or a journalist or someone else who is going to Vegas for business rather than player, but you aren't getting stopped because you might be playing poker rather than roulette.

when I checked last year the following were the answers

wiring (mgm) if you wire over you can only use on the tables there and will be relodged whne you are finished gambling. (I thought I read sowhere else it may be different for RIO or Bellagio but not sure) but wasnt an option as far as I was concerned

loading the credit card , problem here when you withdraw over there they charge like 6% so to take out 10k costs $600 , not great value.

have no cheap solution unfortunately

Saw this in a documentary recently. Bout professional Blackjack Players, they strapped it to their bodies. Was Pretty cool. They took in like, 200,000 or something all strapped to their bodies.

That was the movie "21" based on the book Bringing Down The House by Ben Mezrich. The MIT blackjack team was evading taxes, hence their need to conceal the cash movements.
