Left winger- I found it the hardest position- no one really stood out- I went for Messi as he has that bit of magic in him, we could/ probably will be talking about him being an all time great!

Anyone disagree that Zidane is by far the greatest of his generation??

I never really liked Zidane im not saying he wasnt a great player just I dont think he deserves the position of undisputed greatest player of the past 15 years he has gained.
    Ive done a 1st/2nd choice
Assuming 94 ability on otherwise Baresi and McGrath would have made it
    Gk: Schmeichel/Buffon
    DL: Maldini /Irwin
    DR:Thuram/Cafu
    DC:Nesta/Desailly
    DC:Adams/Daragh Maguire
    ML:Nedved/Overmars
    Mr:Figo/Mababazi
    CM: Keane/Osam
    Am:Rivaldo/Boban
    CF:Shevchenko/Shearer
    CF:Ronaldo/Battistuta

    Buffon

    Zanetti
    Maldini
    Desailly
    Cannavaro

    Figo
    Deschamps
    Totti
    Nedved

    Ronaldo
    Batistuta

Went for Totti ahead of Zidane because Zizou was so inconsistent in Serie A. As a Juve fan I would get so frustrated with him. Totti performs week in week out

    Schmeichel

    Irwin Baresi Nesta Maldini

    Figo Zidane Keane Ronaldinho

    Ronaldo Bergkamp

For me, Irwin has to go in there. I think Maldini has been the better LB, but imo Irwin was better than Cafu.
I think Cannavaro is somewhat overrated, i.e. still amazing but not quite up there with say Nesta or Baresi.
Keane for me has to go in there too. He was the captain of the team that dominated the premiership for almost a decade.
Figo Ronaldo and Ronaldinho (at his heights 2 years ago, he was unstoppable. That hattrick against Real Madrid was just amazing) are obvious.
Then of course there is Bergkamp, what an amazing player. Rivaldo was something special, but Bergkamp was just amazing.

Then of course there is only one captain, Zidane.

Desailly.... think a lot of people forget how great a DM he was also
    Rijkaard
    Hagi
    Baggio

McGrath would have made it (Paul McGrath my lord Paul McGrath) but for the post 94 part

Does anyone think that Larsonn is a bit unfortunate to be overlooked here. I know he spent most of his time playing in a sub standard league but when he moved he won 1 (maybe 2) la Ligas, a Champions League and a Premiership.

    Buffon

    Cafu
    Nesta----Desailly
    Maldini

    Figo
    Zidane
    Redondo
    Giggs

    Ronaldo
    Shevchenko

    Reasons;

Buffon is, IMHO the best 'keeper of all time.

Cafu, Argueably the best Brazilian captian of all time, easily the best right full of the last 20 years.

Nesta, Some will put Cannavaro ahead of them, I reckon they are insane, Nesta is as close to the perfect CB you'll ever get.

Desailly, The Rock, nick name says it all.

Maldini, Paolo is the only player currently playing who you can argue is possibly the best player of ALL TIME, his contribution to world football is immeasureable.

Figo, no other choice for right wing really...

Zidane, Anyone who argues his inclusion is, simply put, a fool.

Redondo, I'ce said it before, I'll say it again, best DM of the last 20 years, the absolute complete midfeilder, had everything and then some.

Giggs, Suprised myself when I thought of him, but really, he was the best left winger in the world from the age of 18 till about 29, and he's still not too bad...

Ronaldo, possibly the greatest finnisher of all time, easily the best striker of his generation.

Sheva, STFU, yeah he's been ****e at chelase, but he's also smashed just about every goalscoring record in club football, man is a f*cking legend.

    Subs:
Schmeical (Buffon juts shades it for me).
    Costacurta (Never made mistakes, EVER!).
Thuram (IMHO the Arch Typical Modern Centre back).
Albertini (The Origional Pirlo/Xavi type player).
Boban (said it before, say it again, my altime Fav player to watch, so intelligent on the ball).
Baggio (The epithomy of number 10, best "second Striker" ever).
Weah (3 time African player of the year, world player of the year, European player of the year, Serie A player of the year, Serie A top scorer, Champions league top scorer, French Championship top scorer, Serie A foreign player of the year... the list goes on).

    Honurable mentions;

Keane, he was damned good, I'll admit it.

Totti, Baggio just shaded him for the bench spot.

Rivaldo, he was immense when he bothered his arse.

Cannavaro, Nesta is better and always was.

there are simply too many World class forwards over this time period. Larson may get in one or two peoples teams but ahead of Ronaldo, Batistuta, Baggio, Stoichkov, Rivaldo, Weah or even Van Basten he will struggle IMO. still surprised that this is the first mention he has got

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Look, Van Nist and Henry have barely made peoples lists at all. Larsson has no chance and rightly so.

    Ok mine is.

    Buffon

    Zambrotta Cannavaro Helguera Maldini

    Redondo Keane

    Messi Zidane Riquelme

    Raul

*Probably not the best but meh*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,563 ✭✭✭kinaldo

Almost impossible to pick the best but I'd definitely have Raul and Redondo in there. Rivaldo wasn't good enough for long enough for me. And I do remember watching him at Deportivo. I think it was around 1999 that a poll in a Catalan newspaper had Barca fans voting Raul as the best player in Spain ahead of Rivaldo. I remember reading that in World Soccer Magazine at the time. He also pipped Rivaldo to the Pichichi that year (Golden Boot). In 2002 Sir Alex Ferguson was calling Raul the best player in the world. Since he burst onto the scene in 94 he's probably been the most consistent forward in Europe, much more so than Rivaldo. Perhaps if he was Brazilian he would get the credit he should be getting.

    Baresi in some people's teams?

He was playing way before the '94WC surely.

A legend no doubt, but I don't think he should be considered here tbh.

If you're thinking of the game in the Burnacow, where Ronnie got a standing ovation, he scored two that night, Etoo scored the other. Or maybe you're thinking of Messi's hattrick last year?

    My team;

    Kahn

    --Cafu
    Hierro
    Nesta
    Maldini----

    Makalele

    ----Figo
    Zidane
    Guardiola

    Romario
    Ronaldo

Guardiola is my favourite player of all time, so I had to put him in there.

There is way way way too much Madrid there for my liking, and I left out Figo and Roberto Carlos. Jaysus... Carlos is only missing because of Maldini, I was considering putting him on the right instead of Cafu. :p

Cant believe nobody mentioned Hierro yet, 5 La Liga's, 3 CL's and 102 goals in 439 league games. Not bad for a bloody defender.
    Ok mine is.

    Buffon

    Zambrotta Cannavaro Helguera Maldini

    Redondo Keane

    Messi Zidane Riquelme

    Raul

    Raul is **** upfront as a 9.

A legend no doubt, but I don't think he should be considered here tbh.

I remember seeing him play when I was still like 12, so he must have went on till around 98ish?

No, it was the 2 goals one. Thought it was a hattrick. That's why I love some sets of football fans. It takes real lovers of the beautiful game to applaud the performance of an opponent who just ripped them to shreds.

Baresi retired fro international footie after the 94 world cup and from professional footie at the end of the 96/97 season, and those were easily his 3 most forgettable seasons as a Milan player. so from 94 on wards, he was not deserving of being in any of these teams, and I'm Rossonero...

Fair enough :) I just remember seeing him play and he was amazing :)

I shall take him out, but I'm unsure who to put in in his stead.

I don't think Cannavaro is that amazing. He only joined Inter at the age of 29, didn't win much, then went to Juve, where he won 2 leagues which were bought. Then he went to Madrid and has been crap. The one thing that puts him up there was his amazing performance in a world cup winning side, but imo that isn't enough to put him ahead of other defenders.

Hierro is a pretty good bet to be honest. 5 league titles and 3 CL's is just an amazing feat. I'm going to throw out a bit of an oddball here, but Sol Campbell could but a good bet to. He was an amazing defender not just for Arsenal, but for England aswell when he was constantly their best defender.

If I was changing my team, I utterly forgot about Raul, one of my favorite players, I'd pop him in ahead of the great dutchman, but only just.

    Buffon
    Cafu---Nesta---Hierro---Maldini
    Keane---Redondo

    Zidane
    ----Messi
    Ronaldinho---
    Ronaldo

Fair enough, Messi has much to prove and he might well be made of glass, but when he gets the ball you can but hold your breath and watch. That's what makes an attacking great IMO and all four of that front 4 had that ability at their peak. Ronaldo is the best striker I've ever seen, watching clips from that season he had at Barca is just a joy. Ronaldinho too, for the two or three seasons when he was the best player on earth, could do things no other player in history was able to do - unbelievable stuff. Zidane is the best player of his generation and quite possibly the best of all time IMO.

Cafu and Maldini pick themselves, but tbh I only started paying enough attention to football recently to be able to pick the centre backs, so I dunno about them really. Buffon is pure class - though I expect if you ask me in 5 years time Casillas will be ahead of him, absolutely wonderful keeper.

You cannot be a Juve fan if you've left out Alessandro Del Piero. Shame on you.

You managed to include to pearlers here.

Cannavaro not up there with Nesta?

Irwin in a world eleven? You are having a laugh.

    Schmeichael

    Roberto Carlos
    Hierro
    Desailly
    Cafu

    Giggs
    Redondo
    Zidane
    Beckham

    Raul
    Ronaldo

I've even managed to leave favourites like Shearer, Ginola and Luis Enrique out! No fücking team would come close to beating that group of players!!!

    On the bench,

    Casillas
    Batistuta
    Nesta
    Keane
    Henry

Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and one or two others were just unlucky or too lazy. Enrique should probably be on the bench as he could play literally any outfield position and look world class.

Edit: forgot about Figo, have him ahead of Becks or Giggs.

The "Spanish Baresi" according to Capello. And a hero of mine ever since Euro 96. Passing, shooting, heading, timing, awareness, composure, leadership etc. all outstanding. Discipline was erratic. Most booked player in La Liga history.

Im just saying, nowhere to be seen for 4 pages, and then poof he has a 100% record once I mention him. Hahaha, no seriously though, there was NEVER a centre back who had as much talent on the ball, his passes were Riquelme esque at times, I absolutely hated him, but he was just so so good. I mean, 100 goals in 450 games in the league is ridiculous for a defender, as well as 30 in 90 for Spain.

Luis Enrique is a great shout actually. I saw someone with a lovely formation on the previous page and I just might have to knick it off them... =) The rapidly disappearing 3-5-2 formation.
