Can Abortion be Art?

An American art student, Aliza Shvarts, has done a piece in which she purposefully gets herself pregnant then purposefully miscarries using abortificants. She films the miscarriages and also keeps some of the blood.

    She describes it best herself:
For the past year, I performed repeated self-induced miscarriages. I created a group of fabricators from volunteers who submitted to periodic STD screenings and agreed to their complete and permanent anonymity. From the 9th to the 15th day of my menstrual cycle, the fabricators would provide me with sperm samples, which I used to privately self-inseminate. Using a needleless syringe, I would inject the sperm near my cervix within 30 minutes of its collection, so as to insure the possibility of fertilization. On the 28th day of my cycle, I would ingest an abortifacient, after which I would experience cramps and heavy bleeding.

Personally I think this is unbelievably sick.

    Opinions?

You should keep that, it could be considered art.

    I blame the Turner Prize.

How many abortions did she cause on herself? She's seriously hindering her chances of giving birth in the future by doing so.

No. But as you demonstrated, Art can be an abortion.

Meh! Anything counts as art these days.
There is probably someone out there willing to pay a lot of money for the contents of your septic tank.

Probably for the best tbh. Kid is nearly better off not existing than raised by this nut.

Does this mean that if a rapist records his attack he can claim it as a performance art piece?

Anything can be classed as Art these days, accidentally knock over a palette onto a canvas and it could be a mess or worth 1,000,000 depending on what way the light catches it. Sick though...that is really plain disgusting. I wouldn't normally be one to judge someone on their actions or choices involving their own body, but...

I don't know how it could be classed as art.

This is what you call art.

    /Drools pretentiously.

I like how the subtle tones of the rough, yet stalwart brick suggest an emotive personification of communism; the subsequent contrast with the gray, institutional and implied capitalist floor ultimately insinuates an eloquent return to the Cold War

Or maybe it's just a brick on the floor.

I'm an Art History student and I can honestly say that modern artists really take the biscuit sometimes but I have never, ever seen anything this bad. I really don't see the humour in it.

Does anybody know anything about the men who's sperm she uses? Like, do they know about it?

    dudess please stay on topic!

Geez, that's a pretty sick hoax.

I dunno, the talk is that this is some kind of elaborate hoax (maybe this in itself is the "art")

If it is true, I hope she has been irreperably damaged and cannot conceive when she wishes to.

So many people wishing for babies and mourning lost ones and this stupid wagon trying to become famous by doing this.

    I love it.

Anything can be art and whether it is worthy of being described as art can be judged by the emotions and reactions it evokes.

I think, judging by the reactions in this thread, that you cannot deny its artistic merit.

I'm not surprised it's a hoax, since I doubt someone would put their body through that and also not have any moral concerns. However, the concept is still brilliant.

Pretentious art that is fúcked up is the best kind.

I love it. She has a period every month and claims she's self aborting and people actually believed it.
