Could be anything from a bug in the app to another app he installed interfering with it just uninstall and reinstall make sure you get the latest version

Hi I bought an unlocked 8gb iphone in Boston. While I was over there, the internet settings worked fine because it came with a ''dummy'' AT+T sim. But since I came back to dublin, my wifi wont work. I am on the meteor network. It just comes up and says, you are not subscribed to EDGE and cannot find server etc. Just wondering what I can do? I heard that the iphone has the same net settings as the Nokia N95 so i called meteor and got them to send me the settings. But it still doesnt work. Any advice, really appreciated! thanks!

Hi - I have the same experience: I am on a Pay Monthly meteor plan, and phoned Customer Care and signed up for the €9.99/250MB/month plan. Cust Care told me they had activated the ISP for my account, and to use APN=isp.mymeteor.ie, username=my, password=meteor, and to restart the phone. I did all this but still get the message:

"Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE"

"Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server."

Did you ever solve this problem? thanks

Lads Meteor doesnt have an edge network so you will enver be able to subscribe to edge on meteor. you should still be able to use wireless if you are in your wireless network!

Anyone finding their iphones "locking" and requiring a power cycle to restore?

Phone is an original 112OTB, upgraded to 113 and then ziphoned.

I suspect its the bluetooth causing it, as it seems to occur when used after driving (parrot 3200 hands free).

Is it worth trying to upgrade to 114? And on PC, whats the best to do that (will it downgrade the bootloader)?

Just a word of warning for those of you travelling to the US to buy an iPhone - Head to the Apple store when you arrive as there is still huge demand and I had to go to 3 apple stores over 2 days before I could get one. Don't leave it till the last day as you could find yourself coming home without one. As mentioned previously there is no problems buying them without a contract in the Apple Store except they won't let you pay cash for the phone, it has to be on credit card.
Thanks to everyone for the help with unlocking it. For someone who hasn't much of a clue I found iLiberty simple!!
Couple of problems though. 1.How do I get games on it? 2.how do I connect to internet etc when not in WiFi zone? 3.How do you transfer contacts from sim?
    Thanks

    1. Download games from installer - NES emulator is a popular one!

    2. U need to setup EDGE when your not in wifi area - can be quite expensive depending on what kind of account you have.

    3. Download simport from installer to transfer contacts from sim

Thanks Moorele, As I said earlier I'm not really a tekkie !!! How and where do I find Installer? Do I set up edge with the operator (O2) or manually on the phone?
    Tks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭moorele

Did you not put installer on when you unlocked it? You can do it using iLiberty - i think you go to advanced and it should be there. When its installed you'll see it on the main screen of your iphone.

As for EDGE you might need to get onto o2 and get them to activate it on your account. I'm on pay as you go o2 and it was set up automatically I didnt have to input any settings... If you do need settings tho - search this thread I'm pretty sure people have posted them a few times!

Lads what's the deal with plugging your unlocked (iLiberty+, since I'm using windows) iphone into itunes? Is it going to make a difference? Can you do it? Will it recognise it's unlocked.

Hopefully picking one up tomorrow just being impatient!

    Hi

Sorry if I'm rehashing things that have been asked over and over again on here, but I'm a technology dunce and I don't know who else to ask!

I've been toying with the idea of getting an IPhone for the last few weeks. But I have two big issues:

    1) My current SIM card contains a huuuge amount of info which I don't want to lose - namely my entire phonebook (which for work reasons, is gigantic compared to most people) and also a number of text messages which I cannot afford to lose. According to a guy in the O2 shop, there is absolutely no way of saving this info. Is he correct??

    2) I've heard by word of mouth that there has been a price slash of the IPhone north of the border. Is it worth my while going up there to buy it there? And what kind of problems would this mean in terms of switching numbers, networks etc. across to my current (Southern) O2 account?

I would appreciate any advice you can give! Thanks

    Ian.

What is your existing phone? There are apps out there that can help you save down data to your PC with a cable or bluetooth.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 546 ✭✭✭Froot

I assume you mean buying one with O2 on a contract.

    1. Is it worth buying it? That is up to you. Currently the iphone does not have video recording with its camera, 3G capability (ie video calling) and it does not natively support MMS messaging, video recording can be done using a third party application as can MMS messaging (though not perfectly). The newer verson (this June or July supposedly) will almost certainly have 3G and it might have MMS support, something which is so bloody stupid to omit, a 2MP camera on a multimedia phone and it cant send them unless you use email. Being honest, in my experience, Apple are mean when it comes to things like releasing specs ahead of the day the product goes on sale. I wouldn't hold my breath for them to release any information whatsoever about a newer version until the day it's sitting in O2 ready to be bought.

    2. O2 Ireland is not O2 UK. If you buy a phone on contract up there you will be on the English Network, so you will be permanently roaming if you take it out of the North or UK. Never mind buying it in the North, thats my opinion.

    3. Manually write down all your names and numbers and manually enter them into the iphone.

    HI

(I thought I had started a thread earlier, but it seemed to disappear )

I've been thinking of buying an Iphone for a few weeks now, but there are a few niggling issues getting at me. Sorry if these have been hashed and rehashed on here already, but I'm a dunce when it comes to technology and really need to ask!

    1) Is it worth my while getting one, or should I wait until the new version comes out? (as per all the gossip)

    2) Should I travel North and buy it there at the much reduced price? What will this mean for transferring my current (Southern) 02 account to the Iphone? Will it create problems because I would be doing it from the North?

    and most importantly:

    3) My current SIM card has (for work reasons) a gigantic number of phone numbers on it, compared to the average person, as well as a number of messages which I need to keep for the same reason.
The guy in the O2 shop tells me that there is no way at all of transferring any of this info to the Iphone - and that I will lose it all, which I cant really afford to do.

Can anybody let me know if there is a way around this?

    Thanks a mill

    Ian.

i doubt your sim card has the no's, they can only store so many are you sure they arent saved to the phone?

o2 guy is a monkey of course you can transfer them, what type of phone is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,295 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Erm, no actually the O2 guy was right, currently there's no *official* way to transfer numbers from either the simcard of via bluetooth.

There are of course third party apps that will do this but only if the iPhone has been jailbroken.

i didnt for one second assume it wouldnt be jailbroken :D

is there no sync proggys for i phone?

op needs to back up his original contacts first up anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 601 ✭✭✭masseyno9

If you get an iphone you can sync all your contacts from current phone to outlook, then from outlook to iphone.

Don't worry. It's fine. It will see the phone, you can sync your music/videos/contacts. It doesn't care if it is unlocked. Just remember to NEVER update the phone firmware via iTunes or you will lose the unlock/activation/jailbreak. You can easily get it back unlocked but you will have lost whatever was on the phone and have to load it on again.

    That's good to know.

Picked one up in the o2 in Newry eysterday anyways!

    What a piece of kit!

Unfortunately in work they're running on Windows 2K and I don't think the iphone will ever work on it!

If you have a huge number of contacts most likely they are in the phone memory with only a subset of them actually on the SIM card (maybe 250). So you can use your phones software and cable/bluetooth to copy your contacts onto your PC and put them into Windows Address Book or Outlook. Then once your iPhone is unlocked/jailbroken/activated you can sync your contacts with iTunes from Outlook or WAB.

If you have a smaller number of contacts which are actually all on the SIM then there is a utility you can download from Installer (a program on the iPhone put there by most unlock/activate/jailbreak applications). It's called iSMS. You use this on the iPhone with your SIM card in it. No PC or sync required.

quick one lads....i was using my iphone on a speakeasy sim, until i could transfer my billpay number from 3 to O2, and all was working well....

i got my number transferred to O2 today, and everything seems to be OK, except i can't send any txts...i can receive them though...

any ideas, i thought it might be the "message center number", but having looked i can't find any setup for texts on the iphone...

    *EDIT*

just noticed EDGE ain't working either...PDP authentication failure

are the edge settings differant for PAYG and billpay??

    I've tried

    APN: internet
    Username: user
    Password:

    APN: internet
    Username: gprs
    Password: gprs

Nope, one of my buddies went up with me and got one too. They don't really care, didn't even ask me for an address (But have one just in case anyways) I talked to them about raoming prices a bit but they didnt seem too concerned either way!

Try sim in another phone to make sure it is not a sim problem do you get a sending error

There is a fix that involves ssh into the phone find the sms.db file and either copy it over to your pc or rename it on the phone so that you will either have a file called oldsms.db or nothing at all then reboot the phone the phone will create a new sms.db file if that was the problem you should be able to send texts if not remove the new sms.db and rename the old one

You should find the file from root go to library then SMS

Was Edge working on the o2 payg are you sure EDGE is turned on for your new account

Better to use SIMPORT from the installer as it is free unlike iSMS
