First Gen iPhone Unlock / Sourcing (non subs) [Post these questions here ONLY !!!]

after cracking the screen on my iphone I sent it to apple in USA to fix it, they charged us 270 dollars and gave us a new one...grand...used ILierty on it this morning on it and within a half hour of the new 1.1.4 phone arriving by fedex it was up and runnning....brilliant....
here is where my problem begins...........
Feeling cocky that I managed to get the new fone working straiht away I decided to try and use ILiberty to upgrade our other Iphone from 1.1.2 to 1.1.4...I followed the same steps as I had with the new one but I seem to have locked it out and now it is looking to boot the phone...
all that is happening is the following line is repeating over and over on the screen:
BSD root: md0, major 2, minor 0
ILiberty says its disconnected, nothing is happpening, Itunes cant see the phone anymore and I cant get the phone to switch off or do anything...can anyone help me.....again im way out of my depth!!

when I take the fone off the cradle it says it needs to configure, when I put it back on that line just keeps repeating itself....

ok I managed to fix it, fairplay to the smart guys out there...this includes you guys too....I held the sleep and hold button at the same time until it went back to the apple and connector screen then I restored it on itunes, then I ran ILiberty and it works fine on 1.1.4...yeahy!

I have a never ending list of issues with these phones though...
previous to upgrading to 1.1.4 my text message stopeed working, continuously...I was able to pull it back by clearing the MMS memory turning it off and sending a text to the phone...always worked but the prob kept happening maybe every few weeks...
after restoring and upgrading I thought this would fix the problem but no first text after the upgrade and it wouldnt send...any ideas on how to fix this permanently??? It drives me mad!

I have used it on about 10 phones at this stage no problems with any of them

However you misunderstand what pwned does it patches the bootloader so that it will run custom firmwares if you update to a newer firmware you would have to customise the newer firmware first you can use itunes to update the phone with your customised firmware but you cannot just update to any new apple release without customising it first

So if i get a relative to buy one online-they wont be forced into signing up for the two year contract. UNLESS they activate it when they use it. Is that correct? Just want to be 100% sure before doing it!

Just check and make sure it is not the sim card try it in an different phone did one a couple of weeks ago tried everything turned out to be the sim card when you have the sim in another phone try clearing any stored texts on the sim

i tried that and there ere loads of old messages so I deleted them, when I put sim back in iphone still sending error...do i need to clear the sms memory agian if so how do i do this as the programme i sued previously is not in this installer package...

also how do I get springboard/summerboard to work in this version (although never got it to work previously) all the utube vids show an option to install springboard/summerboard, i dont have this can down load themes but nothing happens

I want to replace my mp3 player (Creative 30gb, memory not fully used so don't need it all), mobile (currently only used for calls and sms and as an organiser/alarm clock/calculator, rarely use other applications, mms or internet, although I might start using them) and digital camera (8mp but only used for taking pictures at parties/in pubs/the odd holiday photo) with one device that will be almost as good as the three of these on their own.

Where is the best place to get an i-phone? I have friends going to America for the summer so is that my best option? Can you buy them over the counter or do you need a contract?

What about buying one on eBay? Has anyone on here successfully done this?

I'm about to update using Pwnage. I'm currently on an unlocked phone with 1.1.2 firmware. My question is - do I need to restore in iTunes to 1.1.4 before I start the process or can I just update using the custom firmware with Pwnage??

No you need to be on 1.1.4 to use pwnage

Nearly all your questions are answered every two pages.. You probably did even check the page before? Go do it...all your questions will be answered.

You unlock yourself and takes 5mins and you cannot get it wrong. The program does it all for you.
There is no comparisson with a 8.3mp camera... its 2mp and theres no flash. Great screen to display the pics on though.

Were you able to send a text with the sim in the other phone

Did you restore to 1.1.4 or did you update to 1.1.4

What app was it you were using

lastly did you restore to 1.1.4 then set the phone up as the a name you had stored in itunes so you got your call history sms etc if yes that might be your problem as if it is not the sim card then a fresh OS should have fixed it unless of course if you corrupted the file with data from your previous OS

Install community sources and you should see summerboard in the installer

Hi unklerosco - thanks for the reply. Did you install the BSD Subsystem and SSH client via the installer after you used the Pwned tool? I take it this is straight forward enough? Also i've read in other posts that you need to install some international software for the iphone to be able to make calls and send sms messages in Ireland?

I had to pwn it twice to get the BSD n SSH to install via installer... Mine worked straight away, location was already set to Ireland for me... U'll need to install the app support patch from installer to get rid of the +353 thing

Thanks, I did check back a couple of pages but it was all about updates and applications

I'm buying one because I need a second phone and also a new mp3 player, so don't want to have to carry 3 devices around in my pocket all the time, I dont use a camera too often so that doesn't make much of a difference.

Just one question, how much would it cost in the USA for 8gb and 16gb, would I save much over eBay? And can you just walk into a shop in the US and buy one or do you need to sign a contract, show id etc?

Hello,

My iphone has arrived from the states, it is a 8gb locked with 1.1.2 firmware.
When I connect it to itunes it wants to go throught the A&T activition process.

Can I use iliberity to unlock the phone?
Any advise from the experts????

Prices everwhere are fixed by apple but in the us its 399 and 499$ whereas here its 399 and 499eur. The cheapest place to buy is the US. Ebay will only be marginally cheaper than buying on o2 here minus the contract..but look around for a good deal.

If buying in the US you can only buy in the apple store without contract and even then you need to pay on credit card. If you're buying in the summer then the 3g iphone should be on sale by then.

I'm with Vodafone, has anyone any experience of using an unlocked iPhone on Vodafone? What features won't work?

I presume it's possible to just walk into the Apple store & buy the phone, no hassle??

How long's a few weeks? If you can hold out till june/july you may be able to pick up one of the new versions that's supposed to be coming out. 3G capability etc. If you're not then not to worry.

Anyway when you get to the States, here's how it goes:

-> You walk into Apple Store pick up iPhone 16Gb and head to the checkout.

You: "Hi i'd like to buy this"

Apple store guy: "ok cool do you want to purchase an AT&T contract with that?"

You: "No thanks i'm already with AT&T/No it's for a friend /or just No thanks!"

Apple guy : "ok that'll be 200 euros cheaper than it is in ireland"

You: "haha ok"

Apple guy: "here you go enjoy using your iPhone"

You: " oh i will! cya"

Not a bother really. My mate got 4 two weeks ago and we unlocked them no problemo and sold 2 for 500 each. Mine's on Meteor and his is Vodafone. Everything's working fine.

Start it in restore mode connect to itunes and update to 1.1.4 then use iliberty+ to unlock it

Or if you have a mac used PWNED

Latest version of appsupport is 1.3b9 install community sources or add iclarified as a source

If you are not prompted to update appinstaller uninstall it and reinstall the latest version nothing you have should be interfering with it probably just did not install correctly

cdebru you seem to be telling every mac user to use pwned. My phone should arrive in the next few days and just want to know is there any advantage of using pwned right now over iliberty which I've been using to jailbreak and upgrade my ipod touch. Since I would only be doing the basics and not loading a custom firmware does it make a difference?

Right now the only reason I could see using pwned(from my understanding) is that you can load on a leaked 2.0 firmware onto the phone albeit buggy and not supported.

So is it iliberty or pwned? And I presume in iliberty you leave the baseband option unticked?
