Help me out please, brothers. I haven't had a film night in a long time and am looking for something good. American Classic Movies had the Deathwish series on over the weekend but I ended up missing a few of them, have since ordered the lot. Shows us what we should be doing with crime these days instead of pussyfootin' around! Any other suggestions?

N.B-Don't want this in the Film forum as that Karl Hungus lad will shout at me for requesting a listy type thread. :)

You can't go wrong with Dirty Harry, or most other Clint Eastwood films.

The Great Escape - always a crowd pleaser
True Romance - how can you not like a film with Christian Slater, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman and Christopher Walken in it?
The Blues Brothers - mayhem, destruction and great music
National Lampoon's Animal House - see above
Office Space - one of the great underrated comedies about why we all hate our jobs.
Original Star Wars Trilogy - none of your modern rubbish thanks
High Fidelity - it's about lists. All guys like lists.

    The Terminator series.

Terminator 3 has to be the funniest film of the lot. T2 is probably the best of the bunch.

Can't beat the Die Hard series either.

And oddball this - One Night at McCools. Lots of famous faces, utterly enjoyable, though somewhat quirky.

The Pod Race in The Phantom Menace is better than the fight when Luke destroys the Death Star.

    Padmé is better than Leia.

Darth Maul is a great Sith, fantastic.

And don't forget, the Ewoks  Worse than Jar-Jar Binks imo.

So while I agree the Original Trilogy is better, the newer three are not without their charms.

    Great Film/Book.

    Others to Recommend.

    The (Original) Wicker Man.
One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest (best book to film adaptation ever, imo).
    Sin City.
    Reservoir Dogs.

Rambo (the new one) - worth it just to see the 'nuclear' claymore :D

Saw that on tv recently, didn't like it at all and switched off half way through. Liv Tyler looks great in it though.

Another for my list, Tremors. Everything that a classic B-movie should be except it wasn't made in the 50s.

Thanks for the suggestions, the auld credit card will take a whack but all in good fun. A good few Westerns on over the next few days. Cool Hand Luke and The Hustler as well. :D Love those classics and prefer them to much of the modern stuff.

Well if you're after classic westerns you have to include High Noon, The Magnificent Seven and The Wild Bunch.

If I could only watch one movie ever ... it would have to be Heat ... if only for the 'cuppa coffee' scene with Bob & Al*, and the shoot-out scenes when played on a good telly/sound system ... souperb!

Serenity is a crackin' movie also ... and O Brother Were Art thou is also a gem, although I can't watch it with some of my buddies, as they swear that John Goodman's bible salesman is based on a famous rant I once pulled in my first job **

I've picked up some suggestions here, which I will consider in great detail ... thanks :)

*when you watch that movie as often as I have ... you're on first name terms with the stars :)

** I don't look anything like John Goodman ... much

Ruu, its got to be 'The quiet Man', a true man's movie, where John WAyne shows us exactly how to treat the wimmins. What other move has such a classic quote as 'would ye like fine stick to beat the young lady sir?'

    A BGRH classic IMHO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,980 ✭✭✭trout

The Quiet Man ... isn't that the one where The Duke kicks down the bedroom door, and throws Maureen O'Hara (gorgeous red-heads ftw!) into the room

"there'll be no locked doors in this marriage" ... it's the pivotal moment where he decides to get the dowry in the end. Ah ... they don't make 'em like that any more.

    QFT!

fave line outta OBWAT is when Everett is trying to purchase a tub of Dapper Dan and gets frustrated cos it takes 2 weeks to have any stock delivered to the store:
"2 Weeks from everywhere. Well now ain't that a geographical oddity!"

    Dapper Dan FTW!

Also HEAT. Watch the shooting seen with volume at 40 and sub-woofer on max. You'll have ringing in your ears for days!:D

Petey : Wait a minute! Who elected you leader a this outfit?

Everett : Well, Pete, I just figured it should be the one with capacity for abstract thought. But if that ain't the consensus view, hell, let's put her to a vote!
