HI, well just back from the states and used iLiberty + to unlock, jailbreaka and activate and everything looks perfect. I must have forgot to tick the box to install the installer thingy as i do not have that icon on springboard - would it be safe enough to tun iliberty again and just tick "jailbreak" and choose to install the installer this time? I can't seem to be able to install that app by itself so jailbreak seemed the only thing safe to tick?

    Thanks

    Yes should be fine

Today my mate offered to sell me an unlocked iPhone for E300. Not sure how it's been unlocked or anything yet but I just wanted to know if generally the amount of unlocked iPhones going around at the moment are working? On any network?

Also does the iphone/iTunes constantly try and update to this new version that locks the phone or is t easy enough to just buy the phone and never update?

    Thanks :)

There is currently no firmware version that can not be unlocked

i have an iphone unlocked here in ireland since last november got the mms settings working on it yesterday for the first time thinking i had the last piece of the jigsaw put in place i now find i cannot ring a uk number or any foreign number? should there be any settings i need to change ps i am on the vodafone network contract not pay as you go

    regards
Is that maybe a problem with your account? Were you able to ring UK numbers with that sim before? Try ringing vodafone customer service, by default international calls are not allowed, you have to get them to activate something or other to allow them.

hi all was looking to get an unlocked iPhone and use it on Meteor network.

First off would there be any issues with buying one from
    Hong Kong??

Second will they work on Meteor?

I m sorry if this has been covered already but this thread is massive.

Why would you buy from HK?

Let me help you. That auction is £279 for the Iphone, + £20 = £299 total. = €376 @ today's rate on xe.com. + Irish customs charges / VAT (An Post won't release the package until you've paid this) @ €75 (that's what they charged me) = €451 grand total.

You've also got to wait, risk it getting lost, stolen or damaged. If I were you, I'd go up North and buy one from an O2 shop for £269 (= €338).

You'll save yourself time, risk and about €113, excluding the cost of your travel to the North. :)

or if possible get in the us for €255 ($400).

Just out of curiosity (because there's a snowballs chance in hell of me handing over €500 to multi-millionaire Steve Jobs ) does this SIM unlocking device actually work with the iPhone?

    What?

Firstly, what costs €500? An Iphone doesn't.

Secondly, if you don't want to hand over money to Steve Jobs, why are you asking questions regarding Iphones, on a thread filled with people who own Iphones?

Thirdly, there wouldn't be a need to use one of those hardware SIM unlocking solutions, whether it worked or not, since all Iphones can be software unlocked in minutes.

Just out of curiosity, when you signup for the O2 18 month contract here in Ireland, after the 18 months can you use with another network?

I presume he meant the 16GB iphone €499

Thats what apple promised in the US and the UK and in France after the 6 month contract

I presume they would have to unlock it in Ireland what justification could they have for refusing although I would not put it past them to charge you for the privilege

Yeah cause when you buy a Nokia or a Motorola at least you know your money is going to the poor.

Hopefully no charge, although I wouldn't be surprised, I might direct that question to an O2 rep.

    Ziphone 3.0 is out

    BUT DON'T USE IT

As if more proof were needed as to just how bad Ziphone is
He included a fix for the wifi greyed out issue that previous versions of Ziphone caused

To do this he took some code someone else had written but never aknowledged them and he put in a mac address into the code which means every iphone that uses this will end up with the same mac address for there wifi. Which means that 2 iphones that used that could never be on the same wifi network.

    Acquiring the target
Went up to Newry. O2 only had 1 8GB model, and I wanted a 16GB. Therefore I would suggest ringing the O2 store ahead, especially if you want 16GB.

Headed on up the road all the way to Belfast, and it was the same story up there, so I had to settle for an 8GB as I did not want to drive up again soon. O2 had none, Carphone Warehouse said they would have to mail order it.

O2 stores will sell you an iPhone without signing a contract, but there are not supposed to do that officially. I said I was going to unlock it, and yer man made the "shush" gesture jokingly, but carried on.You have to pay by credit card. When putting through the order he asked for an NI postcode, but as I had none, he must have made one up.

At current rates I saved about €60, but the main point is to avoid being locked into the iPhone tariff for 18 months.

    Executing the strike
The phone was on 1.1.2 for some reason, so I upgraded to 1.1.4 - the firmware version shown on the phone uses an internal Apple versioning scheme, so that can be unclear. I nearly missed this, from trying to guess what Apples versioning meant. Google it.

Unlocking with iLiberty was not too hard (is recommended approach at time of writing). However there is a good chance it will require you to put the iPhone in recovery mode yourself. This stumped me for ages. The instructions do not produce the recovery mode message. Someone here had the same problem, and his workaround approach did not do it either. I got the picture prompting you to plug it into iTunes, but never the message (with the yellow triangle) to say it was in recovery mode.

However, everytime I connected the iPhone, iTunes said the phone was in recovery mode, so I figured it must be, and hit the button to tell iLiberty to continue. That worked fine, I have an activated, unlocked and jailbroken iPhone now. Thank to Cdebru, Bob24 and other regulars for all the info.

    Debriefing
Signed up for bill pay today and the new O2 SIM says '3G' on it - works fine, I now have EDGE. EDGE is fast enough to be useable (way better than dialup), but is not speedy - have only tried it at home so far, so signal is so-so. I suspect the shop demo models are all using WIFI. I am now paying 27.50 which gives me 250MB/month on a 12 month contract. I was on prepay before because my voice usage is light.

I think even if you have a regular contract Southern-bought iPhone, you would want to Jailbreak it anyway. For example, it cannot read your contacts off the SIM card (which other phones do), but there is an app you install on the phone that does that (see this thread). You have to use WIFI or else EDGE to install apps - installer will not install stuff of your computer.

On the other hand, when you unlock it, O2 is the main provider you would use anyway, because of their EDGE support.

Pity all this info has to be stuck into one GODZILLA thread. What would it take to create an iPhone sub-forum - for the chance of getting a different mod atleast :p

Think i am going to head up the north aswell so, probably this weekend. I will ring like you said before I do because I want the 32gb model. By reading this thread aswell it doesn't like there is much hassle in unlocking them. Lets just hope they still sell them over the counter without having to sign any contracts up there.

    Um.... I don't think there is a 32GB Model. Just a 32GB iPod Touch.

Just to be on the safe side(in case you get a stickler of a salesperson) just have a Northern address complete with postcode. Does'nt even have to be real(prob better if it's not) or in your name as you can be buying the phone as a pressie for someone. In reality you should not have a problem but it's best to be prepared.

Your right, cheers for the advice. How come they are not making you sign the contract up the north before you leave the shop??? Like they must know people are just going to unlock them.

Just wondering has anyone gotten an IPhone to work on the 3 network. I got one which recognises all network sims except for my one with the 3 network. When I insert my sim, it says invalid sim and thats that.

Am I wasting my time trying to use it or has anyone gotten any joy with the 3 network and IPhone?

Just a quick recommendation.. Apple iPhone School

Excellent site updated daily giving details, screenshots and reviews of all new apps.

Most notable one today - iChabber - which is a Jabber / GMail client.

Cheers for the mature response Sam, much appreciated. I reckon I am gonna have to sign up with Vodafone now to use the phone.

AFAIK the 3g network masts run at 2100 mhz so anyphone compatible with that frequency will work.
Alot of gprs phones are highest at 1800 mhz i think thats what the iphone can pick up!

Click here to see network frequencies
    2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    taken from here!

So the iphone will work on all irish networks except 3 only if the iphone is unlocked though

2100MHz is the frequency used for 3g in europe so any phone compatible with that frequency will be a 3g phone
